Prokeimenon. Third Mode. Luke 1: 46-48.
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
Verse: For he has regarded the humility of his servant.
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:1-7.
BRETHREN, the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people.

Ἀδελφοί, εἶχεν ἡ πρώτη σκηνὴ δικαιώματα λατρείας, τό τε ἅγιον κοσμικόν. Σκηνὴ γὰρ κατεσκευάσθη ἡ πρώτη, ἐν ᾗ ἥ τε λυχνία καὶ ἡ τράπεζα καὶ ἡ πρόθεσις τῶν ἄρτων, ἥτις λέγεται ἅγια. Μετὰ δὲ τὸ δεύτερον καταπέτασμα σκηνὴ ἡ λεγομένη ἅγια ἁγίων, χρυσοῦν ἔχουσα θυμιατήριον, καὶ τὴν κιβωτὸν τῆς διαθήκης περικεκαλυμμένην πάντοθεν χρυσίῳ, ἐν ᾗ στάμνος χρυσῆ ἔχουσα τὸ μάννα, καὶ ἡ ῥάβδος Ἀαρὼν ἡ βλαστήσασα, καὶ αἱ πλάκες τῆς διαθήκης· ὑπεράνω δὲ αὐτῆς Χερουβὶμ δόξης κατασκιάζοντα τὸ ἱλαστήριον· περὶ ὧν οὐκ ἔστιν νῦν λέγειν κατὰ μέρος. Τούτων δὲ οὕτως κατεσκευασμένων, εἰς μὲν τὴν πρώτην σκηνὴν διὰ παντὸς εἰσίασιν οἱ ἱερεῖς, τὰς λατρείας ἐπιτελοῦντες· εἰς δὲ τὴν δευτέραν ἅπαξ τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ μόνος ὁ ἀρχιερεύς, οὐ χωρὶς αἵματος, ὃ προσφέρει ὑπὲρ ἑαυτοῦ καὶ τῶν τοῦ λαοῦ ἀγνοημάτων·

The Reading is from Matthew 8:5-13
At that time, as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and heal him." But the centurion answered him, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, "Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; be it done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Then the King will say to those on His right hand, "Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me."
Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, "Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothed You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?" And the King will answer and say to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, in as much as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me".

Saint Anatolios the Patriarch of Constantinople

Beloved In Christ,
Saint Anatolios, Patriarch of Constantinople, was born at Alexandria, Egypt in the fourth century. During this time, many well-known Byzantine families enthusiastically served the Church, fortified with the teaching of the great Greek philosophers. After a lengthy study of philosophy, Saint Cyril of Alexandria ordained Saint Anatolios deacon. The Patriarch sent him to the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus at which the Holy Fathers condemned the false teaching of Nestorius.
Saint Anatolios remained a deacon at Alexandria until after the death of Saint Cyril in 444; Dioscorus, who was a supporter of the heresy that the Divine nature in Christ had fully absorbed His human nature, then occupied The See of Constantinople. This false teaching diluted the very basis of the Church’s teaching about the salvation and redemption of mankind. If Christ has only a Divine nature and not a human nature, then the salvation of mankind, and even the Incarnation of Christ would be rendered heretical. In 449, Dioscorus and his followers, having received the support of the Emperor, convened the heretical “Robber Council” at Ephesus and deposed the great activist of Orthodoxy Saint Flavian, the Patriarch of Constantinople.
Soon after, Saint Anatolios was elected to the See of Constantinople; he enthusiastically set his focus on restoring the purity of Orthodoxy. In 450, at a local Council in Constantinople, he condemned the heresy of Dioscorus, and Flavian the Confessor, having died in exile, was Canonized a Saints and his relics were returned to Constantinople.
In 451, with the participation of Patriarch Anatolios, the Fourth Ecumenical Council was convened at Chalcedon. The Fathers of the Council affirmed the dogma of the worship of the Lord Jesus Christ, “perfect in divinity and perfect in humanity, true God and true man, made known in two natures without mingling, without change, indivisibly, inseparably”
Among other canons that were ratified at the Fourth Ecumenical Council was the 28th Canon that the See of Constantinople is equal to the Papal Throne of Rome. The churches of Asia Minor, Greece and the Black Sea region, and all new churches that might arise in these regions were placed under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople.
Saint Anatolios also contributed to the written treasury of the Orthodox Church. He composed liturgical hymns for Sundays, for certain Feasts of the Lord, the Nativity and the Epiphany of Christ, for the martyrs, Saint Panteleimon the Healer, Saint George the Victory-Bearer and Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica. In the service books they are assigned simply as “Anatolian” verses.
After a life of constant battle against heresy and for truth, Patriarch Anatolios died in the year 458.
