Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16.

Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

First Mode.

Gospel Reading

10th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 17:14-23

At that time, a man came up to Jesus and kneeling before him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day."

10th Sunday of Matthew

Wisdom of the Fathers

For as the faith of the person presenting oftentimes availed for receiving the cure, even from inferior ministers; so the power of the doers oftentimes sufficed, even without belief in those who came to work the miracle.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the First Mode

When the stone had been sealed by the Jews and the soldiers were guarding Thine immaculate Body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Saviour, granting life unto the world. Wherefore, the powers of the Heavens cried out to Thee, O Lifegiver: Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ. Glory to Thy Kingdom. Glory to Thy dispensation, O only Friend of man.

Apolytikion for Apodosis of Transfiguration in the Grave Mode

Thou wast transfigured on the mountain, O Christ our God, showing to Thy disciples Thy glory as each one could endure. Shine forth Thou on us, who are sinners all, Thy light ever-unending, through the prayers of the Theotokos. Light-bestower, glory be to Thee.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Grave Mode

You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father.

"Our Mission Statement"

As Giving To Us By Our Lord and Savior

Then the King will say to those on His right hand, "Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me."

Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, "Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothed You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?" And the King will answer and say to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, in as much as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me".

Matthew 25: 34-40

 The Dormition of the Theotokos

 Commemorated August 15

In giving birth you preserved your virginity, in falling asleep you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. Your prayers translated you to life, O Mother of Life, and you deliver our souls from death.

 Troparion Chanted In Tone 1

Beloved In Christ,

The feast of the Dormition, the Kimisis of the Theotokos, is celebrated on the fifteenth of August and is preceded by a two-week Fasting Season. The Feast commemorates the death and glorification of the Theotokos. The Church teaches that the Theotokos is taken up to the Kingdom of Christ in the fullness of her Spiritual and bodily presence.

As with the Feasts of the “Nativity of the Virgin” and her “Entrance to the Temple” there are no biblical or historical sources for these Feasts. The Holy Orthodox Church teaches us that the Theotokos reposed, as all humanity does, not “voluntarily” as in her Son’s Crucifixion, but by the necessity of her mortal and human nature, which is bound by the corruption of this world.

The Great Vesper and Orthros Services of this Feast reiterates the main theme that, the Theotokos “has passed over into the heavenly joy, into the divine gladness and unending delight of her Son” (Hymn From The Great Vesper Service).

The Old Testament readings of the Vesper, as well as the Gospel readings for the Orthros and the Divine Liturgy, are exactly the same as those for the feast of the Virgin’s Nativity and her Entrance into the Temple. Consequently, at the Orthros Service we again hear Mary say: “My soul magnifies the Lord and my Spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Lk 1.47). During the Divine Liturgy we hear in Paul’s the letter to the Philippians which he speaks of the self-emptying of Christ who deigns Himself into human servitude and human death in order to be “highly exalted by God his Father” (Phil 2.5–11). And once again we hear in the Gospel that Mary’s blessedness belongs to all who “hear the word of God and keep it” (Lk 11.27–28).

The Feast of the Dormition is thus a celebration of the truth, that all men are “highly exalted” in the blessedness of the Victorious Christ and that this great exaltation has been accomplished in the Holy Theotokos. The Feast of the Dormition is the notice, the assurance, and the celebration that Mary’s providence is the destiny of all those, “of low estate” whose Souls Magnify the Lord whose Spirits rejoice in God the Savior and whose lives are totally dedicated to hearing and keeping the Word of God.

Finally, we must emphasize that in all of the Feasts of the Theotokos, all Orthodox Christians celebrate their own Life in Christ. In this sense everything that is praised and glorified in Mary, is a sign of what is offered to all, through the life of the Church.

May the Holy Mother of God intercede to her Son and may she protect us all.

In His Love,

Father Michael
