By their holy intercessions, O God, have mercy on us. Amen.

John Maximovitch, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco

The Holy Hierarch John Maximovitch was born in the Kharkov region in 1896, and reposed in Seattle in 1966. In 1921, during the Russian Civil War, his family fled to Belgrade, joining the ranks of Russian exiles in Serbia, where he later became a monk and was ordained priest. In 1934 he was made Bishop of Shanghai, where he served until the Communists came to power. Thereafter he ministered in Europe, serving as Bishop first in Paris then in Brussels, until he became Archbishop of San Francisco in 1962. Throughout his life he was revered as a strict ascetic, a devoted man of prayer, and a truly wondrous unmercenary healer of all manner of afflictions and woes. He served the Divine Liturgy daily, slept little more than an hour a day, and kept a strict fast until the evening. It is doubtful that any one man gave so much protection and comfort as he to the Russian Orthodox people in exile after the Revolution of 1917; he was an unwearying and watchful shepherd of his sheep in China, the Philippines, Europe, and America. Through his missionary labors he also brought into the Church many who had not been "of this fold." Since his repose in 1966, he has been especially glorified by God through signs and miracles, and his body has remained incorrupt.

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode

Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, for the Lord by His Might, has created a Dominion. He has conquered death by death, and become the first-born of the dead. He has delivered us from the depths of Hades, and has granted the world great mercy.

The Apolytikion of the Annunciation/Evangelismos in the Fourth Mode

Today is the summary of our salvation, and the revelation of the age-old mystery. For the Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announces the good news of grace. Therefore, let us join him, and cry  aloud to the Theotokos: “Rejoice, Maiden full of grace! The Lord is with you.”

The Reading is from Luke 24:1-12

On the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered in to the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home wondering at what had happened.

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Third Mode. Luke 1: 46-48.
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
Verse: For he has regarded the humility of his servant.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:1-7.

BRETHREN, the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people.

The Reading is from Matthew 8:5-13

At that time, as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and heal him." But the centurion answered him, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, "Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; be it done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Celebrations, Milestones, Gratitude, Comfort & Support

Pastoral care: If you or someone you know is sick, homebound elderly, or scheduled for surgery, please call the church office to let us know so Fr. John can make a pastoral visit, or to add someone to the prayer list.

Let us pray to the Lord for the health and salvation of: Suffering and persecuted Christians in the Middle East and the non-Christian world, Virginia, Eugenios, Esther, Penelope, Angeliki, Mary, Nicholas, Polly, John.

Names will be kept on this list for approximately 3 months. Please resubmit Names if needed. Fr. John will include the submitted names at the Psokomide “Offering of Gifts” during the first part of the liturgy when he prepares the mystical gifts of bread & wine. Please lift these names up to the Lord in your personal prayer life as well.

Prayer for healing: Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent our Lord to heal every sickness. Visit and heal us. Grant patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health. Lord, You have taught us to pray for each other that we may be healed. We pray that You heal, guide and protect your servant (s) (pray by name for those who are sick) and grant them the gift of complete health. For You are the source of healing and to You we give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

Matthew 25 Outreach Ministry

Dear Annunciation Family,

NO Hungry Kids This Summer

As you know, throughout the year we collect food donations to support the Seeds of Hope food pantry as well as monetary donations to prepare meals for those in need. Starting this month our focus is to collect healthy food items for children. During the school year, many children receive free or reduced-priced breakfast and lunch; however when school is no longer in session, they may be at greater risk for hunger. Our aim is to limit that risk and maintain their access to nutritious foods during the summer. Examples of healthy kid friendly foods include but are not limited to yogurt, eggs, cheese sticks, peanut butter, nuts, crackers, low-fat granola bars, low-fat milk, apples, baby carrots, yogurt-based dips, hummus, etc. Please feel free to purchase these types of foods on your own and bring them to church or provide monetary donations to this aim. As always, thank you for your continued support and generous contributions!

Bulletin Announcements: For the summer months, please submit your material by Tuesday 12 noon for the upcoming Sunday’s bulletin. All submissions will be placed on a first-come, first-served, space available basis and all submissions are subject to editing and review.
Sunday Special Services: Please contact the parish office at least one week in advance if you would like to have a 40-day Mother & Child Blessing, Memorial, or Artoklasia. All requests are considered based on the ecclesiastical calendar.

From the Desk of Parish Council President

Dear Annunciation Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

School’s out for the summer but church is not!  Summer is a time for family, friends, cookouts, and relaxation.  Please don’t forget your church this summer as it can provide a place for the relaxation of your soul.

Many parishioners have been asking, “How did the festival go?”  It’s a natural question to ask when so many give tirelessly of their time, their talent and their treasure to help our beloved Annunciation.  People want to know that their countless hours baking, cooking, setting up/tearing down equipment and tables, serving guests, stocking and restocking the restaurant, pastries and souvlaki stations, and cleaning all made an impact.  Well they did!

While the final profit numbers are not yet available, as we are still paying bills, our sales during the four-day festival surpassed last year by over $12,000 – and that’s with a near washout on Thursday evening.  Our OPA Journal also surpassed last year by more than $10,000.  Donations to help offset the cost of food, tent and other expenses were also up.  More volunteers came to lend a hand and the atmosphere felt more like a festival!  I hope you all felt the energy!  And as tired as everyone was by the end of the weekend, it was a satisfying tiredness, knowing we all came together as a community, as a family, to help our church.

Do not withhold doing good to the needy, when you may have the power to act.  Do not say, when you able to do good, “Come back tomorrow and I will give you something”; for you do not know what the next day will bring.  Proverbs 3: 27-28; Proverbs 27:1.

Now it’s time to give back.  We hosted an OPA appreciation breakfast on June 18.  I had hoped more would be in attendance so we could personally thank everyone for their support and volunteerism.  This year for the first time, we set tip jars at each station and committed to donate a portion of those proceeds to the Elkins Park Firehouse.  We collected $1,203 in tips and have decided to donate all the tips to the Firehouse!  It’s our way of giving back to the community that has supported our festival every year.

We are also pleased to make a donation of $2,500 from the proceeds of our successful March 25 dinner to support the National Philoptochos Society Children’s Medical Fund.  Since its inception, the Children’s Medical Fund has supported children’s hospitals, medical centers, and children’s medical research programs through grants and has provided assistance to children who would not otherwise be able to afford medical treatment.  Since one of our guiding principles as a parish is to care for our children and youth, it seems a worthwhile cause to support.
