Saints and Feasts

Silas
July 30

Silas, Silvan, Crescens, Epenetus and Andronicus the Apostles of the 70

Saint Silas was a companion and fellow labourer of the Apostle Paul: "And Paul chose Silas and departed...and he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches" (Acts 15:40-41). He later became Bishop of Corinth, and reposed in peace. Saint Silvanos became Bishop of Thessalonica, and also reposed in peace. Saint Crescents, whom Saint Paul mentions in his Second Epistle to Timothy(4:10), became Bishop of Chalcedon, and brought many to the Faith. As for him whom the Apostle of the Nations praises as "my well-beloved Epenetus, the first-fruits of Achaia unto Christ" (Roman 16:5), he became Bishop of Carthage, and after enduring many afflictions from the idolators, and bringing many of them to Christ, he departed to the Lord.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Mode

By Your Cross, O Christ our God, You destroyed death. You opened paradise to the thief. You transformed the lament of the Myrrh-bearing women, and You commanded the Apostles to proclaim You are risen, granting the world Your great mercy.

The Apolytikion of the Annunciation/Evangelismos in the Fourth Mode

Today is the summary of our salvation, and the revelation of the age-old mystery. For the Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announces the good news of grace. Therefore, let us join him, and cry  aloud to the Theotokos: “Rejoice, Maiden full of grace! The Lord is with you.”

Seasonal Kontakion in the Grave Mode

You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Eighth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:11-18

At that time, Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him." Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, "Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." Mary Magdalene went and said to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them that He had said these things to her.

Eighth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.

BRETHREN, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Grave Mode.

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 14:14-22

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

8th Sunday of Matthew

From the Desk of Parish Council President

Hello from Greece!

On behalf of Father John and the Parish Council I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for the generosity demonstrated by our parishioners and Philoptochos chapter members towards the Mytilini Earthquake Emergency fund. The Church of the Annunciation submitted to our Metropolis $2,000 to aid the people impacted by this earthquake. Unfortunately many churches, that have stood for decades, in addition to homes, on the island of Mytilini are also damaged.

Let us all continue to give thanks onto the Lord for all the blessings we receive and can share with those less fortunate.

I came across this article in a copy of Aegean Airlines magazine while flying to our home town of Mytilini and I wanted to share with you.

Yiannis Antetokounmpo:

"All is going well, God bless," he remarked. The young man expresses his devoutness. "That's how I learned to be from a young age. I seek the Lord's help for struggles. Everyone in my family remains proper and God guides our way. Everything that has occurred until now, and lies ahead, we owe to God. "

Now I understand why this young man has such a following!

2017-2018 Youth Ministries Registration

We are blessed here at Annunciation/Evangelismos Church with many Christ-centered Youth Ministries, headed by faithful and caring parishioners who have completed background clearances based on Pennsylvania State Laws

We invite you to learn more about each Annunciation Youth Ministry. You will see that the following goals are at the core of every Youth Ministry:

  • Reach out to young people to help them grow in God’s love.
  • Assist our youth in understanding and deepening their faith.
  • Provide a place of Christian acceptance and Christian role models.
  • Help our youth to build a community with their peers of our church.
  • Provide opportunities for young people to share in the ministry of the church and develop a willingness to serve the needs of others.

Why Youth Registration?

We request every young person participating in youth ministry (regardless of how much or how little) to be registered through the parish office. The information allows us to have home / emergency information on hand as well as birth dates and interests of each youth involved.  Please also note that we are a full Stewardship parish. This means that we continue our effort to fund our entire budget, including all youth ministries, through your stewardship giving. Therefore, you will be pleased know that there are no more youth ministry registration fees; your stewardship contributions fund our Youth Ministries.

We kindly ask you to register now to give us time over the summer to organize our volunteers and be ready to welcome our youth in September. The 2017-2018 Youth Ministries Registration Form covers all Annunciation Youth Ministries (except Greek School, which has a separate Registration Form) from September 2017 to June 2018, and it takes just a few moments to complete from any computer or mobile device. Most Youth Ministry events are already planned for 2017-2018 and you can see them on our web calendar.

Annunciation Youth Ministries are led by parent volunteers and we encourage you to get involved in Youth Ministry with your child.  Please review the various Youth Ministries on our website and don’t hesitate to reach out to Fr. John if you are able to assist

Hello and Welcome to HOPE/JOY 2017-2018!

It is with great enthusiasm that I invite you and your children to participate in another successful year of HOPE/JOY fellowship!

My name is Despina (Debbie) Sourias and I am looking forward to learning and growing with you as your new HOPE/JOY advisor.

I come from Canada, and have been in our community for ten years now and found my reservation in Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Elkins Park. My dream after children was to connect myself and my family in the community that I love and respect wholeheartedly.  With two young boys, and five years apart, they sure know how to keep me busy! I understand the challenges of balancing everyday life and how essential it is to live our faith.

Our mission is to build and strengthen relationships between the Orthodox youth and Christ and His Church through fellowship, education, worship and service. HOPE/JOY will help your children form lifelong friendships before entering GOYA as well as learning about Orthodoxy.

I would love to start making some wonderful memories and traditions for our children to build on.  I welcome all parents to please join me in creating a warm, friendly, sharing environment for our HOPE/JOY kids! Parents, please be involved with our activities, it will help your child to embrace fellowship in a positive way!

Please look forward to an upcoming calendar that will preview our agenda this fall!

Let’s have a JOYful year!

Thank you and much excited,

Debbie Sourias

Matthew 25 Outreach Ministry

Dear Annunciation Family,

NO Hungry Kids This Summer

As you know, throughout the year we collect food donations to support the Seeds of Hope food pantry as well as monetary donations to prepare meals for those in need. Starting this month our focus is to collect healthy food items for children. During the school year, many children receive free or reduced-priced breakfast and lunch; however when school is no longer in session, they may be at greater risk for hunger. Our aim is to limit that risk and maintain their access to nutritious foods during the summer. Examples of healthy kid friendly foods include but are not limited to yogurt, eggs, cheese sticks, peanut butter, nuts, crackers, low-fat granola bars, low-fat milk, apples, baby carrots, yogurt-based dips, hummus, etc. Please feel free to purchase these types of foods on your own and bring them to church or provide monetary donations to this aim. As always, thank you for your continued support and generous contributions!

Reminders

Bulletin Announcements: For the summer months, please submit your material by Tuesday 12 noon for the upcoming Sunday’s bulletin. All submissions will be placed on a first-come, first-served, space available basis and all submissions are subject to editing and review.
Sunday Special Services: Please contact the parish office at least one week in advance if you would like to have a 40-day Mother & Child Blessing, Memorial, or Artoklasia. All requests are considered based on the ecclesiastical calendar.
