FROM HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS

Show-mercy-website-banner-

My Beloved Ones,

Today, I am overflowing with the joy of God’s Holy Spirit. As you know, I am named after St. Alexios, the Man of God, and his life and sacrifices have inspired me as I seek to serve the faithful of the Holy Metropolis of Atlanta. I thank you for you prayers, encouragement, and support.

This week, we began Great and Holy Lent. I pray that as we continue through our journey together, each of you will receive and use the gift that God has given you for his glory “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

God bless you and God be with you. Wishing you Καλή Σαρακοστή,

+ALEXIOS
Metropolitan of Atlanta

FROM THE CHANCELLOR'S DESK

"What is this thing, a gun?" said Billy.

"That is a stapler. Don't you know what a stapler is?" said John.

"No, what is it?"

"It holds papers together like this."

"I would like to have one," said Billy.

"You don't need one," said John.

"Well, I like to hold things together," said Billy.

We all need to be held together by certain forces in our lives. Some people go all to pieces when any dividing force works on them. Our Orthodox faith reminds me of the staple. It may go unnoticed but supplies a real cohesive force in binding a couple together and in making for family unity.

When people worship together and when they find a common faith, the diversities of life do not destroy their stability. We may all expect to come into contact regularly with forces that would divide and destroy us, but in the strength of love, which our faith provides, we find mercy to forgive, patience to persevere and faith to follow in the footsteps of our Savior.

Without sound religious influence, our society would crumble and disappear. We may not need a stapling machine, but we all need the stable force of our religious faith. As we continue our lenten journey together, let us remember… “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

Blessed Lent!

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6.

BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."

The Holy Hieromartyr Hypatius, Bishop of Gangra

This Saint, who was from Cilicia of Asia Minor, became Bishop of Gangra, the capital of Paphlagonia. He was present at the First Ecumenical Council. Because of his confession of the Orthodox Faith, he was put to death by the Novatians, a sect which denied that sins committed after Baptism could be forgiven.
