Message from Metropolitan Alexios

My Beloved Ones,

Yesterday, the Orthodox Church celebrated a beautiful milestone in its recent history, for November 2nd marked the 25th anniversary of His All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew’s elevation to the Ecumenical Throne.

I know I echo the thoughts of my fellow Bishops and Metropolitans when I say that it has been a privilege and honor to serve the Holy Mother Church, with His All-Holiness as a guiding example.

I am particularly thankful to have been able to spend time with His All-Holiness during my service in the Holy Synod. From celebrating Divine Liturgy with him and my fellow Bishops, to discussing initiatives and programs of our Metropolis of Atlanta, His All-Holiness exudes a true Christ-like love and concern for all his flock.

He has exhibited true leadership for the Holy Orthodox Church, taking firm stands on positions such as the environment, the recent refugee crises throughout the world, as well as interfaith dialogues with fellow Christians and non-Christians alike. In all these things and many more, Patriarch Bartholomew has been a true disciple of Christ, demonstrating both his firm commitment to the message of the Gospel, while never forgetting the fruits of the Spirit, including patience and love for all men.

Our Lord ended His earthly ministry by charging His disciples to “…go and make disciples of all the nations…” (Matthew 28:19). In his twenty-five years as Ecumenical Patriarch, His All-Holiness has never wavered in that commitment to proclaim Orthodoxy to a world which was often either indifferent or ignorant. The joy with which he has proclaimed the Good News means multitudes are certainly no longer ignorant of Orthodox Christianity; and indeed, those who truly hear witness His All-Holiness’ evangelizing do not come away unmoved.

Truly, we as a Metropolis, and the entire Universal Body of Christ, should consider ourselves fortunate and blessed to have a Hierarch who so selflessly serves others, with an untiring spirit, no matter the trials or obstacles he encounters.

May the Lord our God continue to bestow health and peace upon His All-Holiness, our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, granting him many more years in the service of Orthodoxy!

From the Chancellor's Desk

Those who are baptized in Jesus Christ do not need to strive after a new life. They have already attained new life through dying with Christ – as noted in the Epistle lesson from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans (6:3-11) which is read during Orthodox Baptisms.

But, they do need to nurture that new life so it can grow and mature. That's what our Lord’s Holy Church is for. That's what constant prayer is for. That’s what faithful worship with our families is for. That's what consistent reading of Holy Scripture is for. That’s what the Orthodox faith is for. It is like the Parable of the Sower. Many of those seeds sprouted up, but only a few grew into maturity. The rest withered and died.

The baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ is dying to our self-centered endeavors and being resurrected into a life marked by His grace and love. When we live in the baptism of Christ our Savior, we touch the hearts of others and help open them to the Holy Spirit and new life in Christ.

Can you afford to take a moment to consider whether you are living and growing in the new life you were given when you were baptized and chrismated into the Holy Orthodox Church – the Body of Christ.

+Fr. George Tsahakis
Chancellor

The only way for our churches to function, let alone to grow, is through volunteers. Volunteering your time and treasures can be a thankless task, riddled with challenges sometimes with seemingly little to no immediate return. We want to thank you for your efforts, and to help you feel more effective. Together, we can help each other by sharing challenges and delivering collaborative solutions to improve our parishes. On Saturday November 12 in Atlanta we will be hosting two open meetings for stewardship and education volunteers. Come to these meetings, and leave with the solutions you need as a volunteer in the Greek Orthodox ministry.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Philippians 3:1-8

BRETHREN, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is not irksome to me, and is safe for you. Look out for the dogs, look out for the evil-workers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the true circumcision, who worship God in spirit, and glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh. Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If any other man thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law a Pharisee, as to zeal a persecutor of the church, as to righteousness under the law blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ.

Gospel Reading

The Reading is from Luke 11:47-54; 12:1

The Lord said to the Jews who had come to him, "Woe to you! for you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. So you are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs. Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,' that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zacharias, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation. Woe to you lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering." As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard, and to provoke him to speak of many things, lying in wait for him, to catch at something he might say. In the meantime, when so many thousands of the multitude had gathered together that they trod upon one another, he began to say to his disciples first, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy."

Wisdom of the Fathers

One must condescend to the soul in its infirmities and imperfections, and bear its defects as we bear those of others; one must not, however, become lazy, but should spur oneself to do better.
