METROPOLITAN IAKOVOS OBIT

Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago has served the Greek Orthodox Church in America for almost 50 years. 

He was born in Athens in 1928 where he received his basic and high school education. He graduated from the Theological School of the University of Athens and was ordained to the diaconate and the holy priesthood. He served the church in Athens until 1954 and later pursued graduate studies in Boston, while at the same time serving as priest in the area. 

He was appointed Archdiocesan Vicar of the 7th Archiepiscopal District of Detroit by Archbishop Iakovos in February 1968. One year later, in 1969, he was elected to the episcopacy by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He was consecrated Bishop of Apameia (an Auxiliary Bishop of Archbishop Iakovos) on Christmas Day of 1969, and appointed to the 7th Archiepiscopal District of Detroit as Bishop of that district.

In 1971, he was appointed President of Hellenic College Holy Cross School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, while remaining as administrative overseer of the Diocese of Detroit. He simultaneously served as the Bishop of the New England/Boston area during his five-year tenure as President of Hellenic College and Holy Cross School of Theology.

Following the reorganization of the Archdiocesan Districts into Dioceses, Bishop Iakovos was enthroned by His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America on May 1, 1979, as the Bishop of Chicago at the Annunciation Cathedral.

In November 1997, the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elected His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Chicago to the active Metropolitanate of Krinis and Exarch of Ionias. In this capacity, His Eminence continued to serve the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Chicago as its Presiding Hierarch. In December of 2002, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elevated the Dioceses of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese to Metropolises of the Archdiocese and elected all of the Hierarchs of the Dioceses as Metropolitans of their respective Metropolises, thus Metropolitan Iakovos was elected Metropolitan of Chicago.

The Holy Metropolis of Chicago of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America consists of 59 parishes in total, thirty-four parishes in Illinois, with another twenty-five parishes in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, northern Indiana, and eastern Missouri; as well as two monastic communities. 

Under his leadership of Metropolitan Iakovos, the Metropolis has increased its efforts to assist the homeless and those in need, as witnessed in the labors of the Metropolis Philanthropy Committee.  He has founded new Youth programs, established various local Dialogue Commissions with other faith communities and worked with other area Religious Leaders in promoting justice and truth in our society.

Various other programs of the Metropolis established by the departed Metropolitan include the Bishop Iakovos Scholarship Assistance Program; the Bishop's Task-Force on AIDS; the Metropolis Jr. Olympics; the Festival of Orthodox Books; as well as numerous programs in religion and Greek education.

Archbishop Demetrios of America will preside at the funeral service for Metropolitan Iakovos, Fri. June 9, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Chicago. The Divine Liturgy will precede the funeral.  The previous evening Thursday, June 8, the Archbishop will chant a Trisagion service in the Cathedral at 7:00 p.m.

Barnabas the Holy Apostle

Saint Barnabas, one of the Seventy, was from Cyprus, of the tribe of Levi, and a fellow disciple with Paul under Gamaliel. He was called Joses, but was renamed Barnabas, which means "son of consolation," perhaps to distinguish him from the Joses called Barsabas and surnamed Justus (Acts 1:23). Saint Barnabas had a field, which he sold and brought the money to the Apostles (Acts 4:36-37). Before the conversion of Saul to Paul, it was Barnabas who was the leader of the Seventy Apostles, the first in preaching and chief spokesman. After Saul's vision on the road to Damascus, it was Barnabas who joined him to the Apostles when the others, because of Saul's reputation as a persecutor of the Church, still feared him (Acts 9:26-27); again it was Saint Barnabas who conscripted Paul as a preacher, bringing him from Tarsus to Antioch after the stoning of Stephen, to assist in spreading the Gospel (Acts 11:25-26). Saint Barnabas preached the Gospel in many places, traveled together with Paul, and finally was stoned to death by the Jews in his native Cyprus. During the reign of Zeno, in the year 478, his sacred relics were found, having on his chest the Gospel according to Matthew written in Greek by Barnabas' own hand. This Gospel was brought to Zeno. Because of this the Church of Cyprus received the right of autonomy, and its archbishop was given the privilege, like the emperor, of signing his decrees and encyclicals in vermilion.

The Sunday of All Saints

Honouring the friends of God with much reverence, the Prophet-King David says, "But to me, exceedingly honourable are Thy friends, O Lord" (Ps. 138:16). And the divine Apostle, recounting the achievements of the Saints, and setting forth their memorial as an example that we might turn away from earthly things and from sin, and emulate their patience and courage in the struggles for virtue, says, "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every burden, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Heb. 12:1).

This commemoration began as the Sunday (Synaxis) of All Martyrs; to them were added all the ranks of Saints who bore witness (the meaning of "Martyr" in Greek) to Christ in manifold ways, even if occasion did not require the shedding of their blood.

Therefore, guided by the teaching of the Divine Scriptures and Apostolic Tradition, we the pious honour all the Saints, the friends of God, for they are keepers of God's commandments, shining examples of virtue, and benefactors of mankind. Of course, we honour the known Saints especially on their own day of the year, as is evident in the Menologion. But since many Saints are unknown, and their number has increased with time, and will continue to increase until the end of time, the Church has appointed that once a year a common commemoration be made of all the Saints. This is the feast that we celebrate today. It is the harvest of the coming of the Holy Spirit into the world; it is the "much fruit" brought forth by that "Grain of wheat that fell into the earth and died" (John 12:24); it is the glorification of the Saints as "the foundation of the Church, the perfection of the Gospel, they who fulfilled in deed the sayings of the Saviour" (Sunday of All Saints, Doxasticon of Vespers).

In this celebration, then, we reverently honour and call blessed all the Righteous, the Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, Confessors, Shepherds, Teachers, and Holy Monastics, both men and women alike, known and unknown, who have been added to the choirs of the Saints and shall be added, from the time of Adam until the end of the world, who have been perfected in piety and have glorified God by their holy lives. All these, as well as the orders of the Angels, and especially our most holy Lady and Queen, the Ever-virgin Theotokos Mary, do we honour today, setting their life before us as an example of virtue, and entreating them to intercede in our behalf with God, Whose grace and boundless mercy be with us all. Amen.

Revelation of the Hymn Axion Estin to a monk on Mt. Athos by the Archangel Gabriel

The Synaxis of the Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is celebrated today for the following reason: In 980, during the reign of Emperor Basil II, when Nicholas Chrysoberges was Ecumenical Patriarch, the holy Archangel Gabriel appeared in the guise of a monk to the disciple of a certain elder living in a hermitage belonging to the Monastery of Pantocrator on the Holy Mountain. During Matins, after the monk had chanted the customary hymn, "More honorable than the Cherubim...," composed by Saint Cosmas the Hymnographer, the Angel chanted the same hymn, but with the following prelude: "It is truly meet to call thee blest, the Theotokos, the ever-blessed and all-immaculate and Mother of our God." Marveling at the hymn's beauty, the monk asked his visitor - who appeared also to be a monk - to record this new text in writing, which the Angel did by miraculously inscribing the words on a piece of slate, using only his finger, and straightway he vanished from sight. This slate was brought to the Church of the Protaton, and from thence to Constantinople, to the imperial court and the Ecumenical Patriarchate, as evidence of the miracle. Henceforth, this version of the hymn to the Most Holy Theotokos began to be chanted in the Divine Liturgy in all the churches. The place where the miracle took place is now called Adein, from the Greek word which means "to sing." The icon itself, before which this hymn was first chanted, is called "the icon of the Axion estin" ("It is truly meet") and it is kept in the sanctuary of the Church of the Protaton on the Holy Mountain.

Brethren, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. Sunday's Sermon

 SUNDAY OF ALL SAINTS

          Dear brothers in Christ, we will hear today in the Hoy Gospel, our Lord saying to His  disciples: "Whoever confesses me before men, him I will also confess in front of my Father who is in heaven." The word whoever contains all the Saints, those whom we celebrate today, the Sunday of All Saints. Among them are the Prophets, the Apostles, the martyrs and generally those who lived and are still living sacramentally in the church. All the Saints have a common attribute, and that is Christ. The Prophets through the Holy Spirit they saw Christ, the Apostles were disciples of the Incarnate Logos and all the other Saints who lived after the Apostles, being members of the Church became members of the body of Christ, were united with Him, the second person of the Holy Trinity, and through Him with the Triune God.

Those who accepted Christ, received from Him power to become children of God. It was so that an assembly of saints was created in the church, formed by those who feed on Christ, like the   helices that feed on the vine and become Christs by grace themselves. But whom do we call a Saint?  A Saint is the one who was baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He went through a period of exercise (askesis), a period of patience and moved through repentance higher into a state of purity, and from purity to spiritual perfection, in the form of extreme humbleness. And then he  abandoned all earthly and rational preoccupation and lived at a higher spiritual level, not caring about the earthly.     

So the Saints are the ones who have gone through these stages, and have became deified by the Divine grace. What do we mean by deification? We mean to achieve the final outcome and the   purpose of man's existence, who has no other reason for his being except this. That is why man was created by God in His image and likeness.

The Saints then, after a lot of labor, after a lot of humbleness, after much patience, received the grace and mercy of God, and became astonished by the love and the size of His mercy, and in turn they love us who seek their assistance. That's why when you approach a Saint you feel that he loves you, and that he shows you the Way to Christ. And it sounds like he says to you: "Look, you're a  sinner, I am more sinful than you are, but do not forget one thing, that God loves us, God is our father and He loves each one of us with the same love that He loves the whole Creation”.  The Saints are  carriers of the Divine Grace, both during their life and after death, that same Divine Grace that filled their soul and their body and after death it filled their holy relics also. It is through the presence of the Saints and of their holy relics, that we get the assurance that God became incarnate, assumed our flesh and deified mankind.

The Saints are the theologians of our church. Theologians in the Orthodox Church are neither some qualified scientists nor intellectuals. At the Synodikon of the Orthodox Church there is a phrase which is repeated six times, "according to the Saint’s divinely-inspired theology." It does not say  according to the detailed scientific studies or in accordance with the profound philosophies of the great thinkers, but it says according to the divinely-inspired theologies of the Saints, of those who have lived their lives obeying Christ's commandments and have acquired the Holy Spirit, like St. John the Theologian, St. Gregory the Theologian and St. Symeon the New Theologian.  The Saints are free from passions, fantasies, thoughts, human desires and weaknesses. They are characterized by perfect freedom, which liberates them from the closed confines of the created things and of time, and admits them, while still living, to the life of the Kingdom of Heaven.   

The Saints are strong, but their strength is not due to them being virtuous or having good or moral habits, but rather that Christ Himself lives in them, who nourishes them and  strengthens them. But the Saints are simultaneously weak, their strength is "perfected in weakness." As St. Paul says, his true pride is not that he was carried to the third heaven and saw the heavenly mysteries of the grace of God, but that there resides in him a strength that is made perfect in his weakness. And he goes on  saying: "For when I am weak, then I am strong."

The Saints are weak like Christ, and while they can do no harm to others, they can be wounded by them, can be abused, can be scorned by them. But at the same time they are very powerful because they derive their strength from Him, our Lord, for Whom we say that He is:  “Full of wounds, but most powerful” and Who protects them by His grace, and they fear not any kind of threat, not even death. In front of All the Saints stands the Holy Virgin Mary, our Restless comfort and protection, who always listens to our prayers and stands by the throne of her Son, asking for our salvation and for relief from our afflictions. This is why we chant: “With the hosts of Angels, God’s messengers, With the Lord’s Forerunner And Apostles, the chosen twelve, With the Saints most holy, With you the Theotokos, We seek your intercessions, That we may be saved.”      

 

ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΤΩΝ  ΑΓΙΩΝ ΠΑΝΤΩΝ

Aγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί, θ’ ακούσουμε σήμερα στο Ευαγγέλιο τον Κύριό μας, να λέει στους μαθητές Του: «Όποιος  ομολογήσει μπροστά στους ανθρώπους ότι ανήκει σε μένα, θα τον αναγνωρίσω και εγώ για δικό μου μπροστά στον επουράνιο Πατέρα μου ». Μέσα σ' αυτό το όποιος συμπεριλαμβάνονται όλοι οι Άγιοι, αυτοί τους οποίους γιορτάζουμε σήμερα, Κυριακή των Αγίων Πάντων. Αυτοί είναι οι Προφήτες, οι Απόστολοι, οι Μάρτυρες και γενικά όσοι έζησαν και ζουν μυστηριακά μέσα στην εκκλησία. Όλοι οι Άγιοι έχουν ένα κοινό σημείο και αυτό είναι ο Χριστός. Οι Προφήτες μέσω του Αγίου Πνεύματος έβλεπαν το Χριστό, οι Απόστολοι ήταν μαθητές Του σαρκωμένου Λόγου και όλοι οι άλλοι Άγιοι μετά τους Αποστόλους, σαν μέλη του σώματος του Χριστού, σαν μέλη της Εκκλησίας, ήταν ενωμένοι μαζί Του, είχαν δηλαδή κοινωνία με το δεύτερο πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τριάδος και μέσω Αυτού με ολόκληρη την Αγία Τριάδα.

 Όσοι δέχτηκαν το Χριστό έλαβαν εξουσία από Αυτόν να γίνουν τέκνα Θεού. Έτσι μέσα στην εκκλησία δημιουργήθηκε η κοινωνία των Αγίων, και έτσι σχηματίζονται και οι άνθρωποι οι οποίοι τρέφονται από το Χριστό, καθώς το κλίμα τρέφεται από την Άμπελο και γίνονται και αυτοί κατά χάριν Χριστοί. Αλλά ποιος είναι ο Άγιος ; Άγιος είναι εκείνος ο οποίος βαφτίστηκε στο όνομα του Πατρός και του Υιού και του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Αυτός που πέρασε μια περίοδο ασκήσεως, μια περίοδο υπομονής και προχώρησε από τη μετάνοια στην καθαρότητα, και από την καθαρότητα στην πνευματική τελειότητα, που είναι η ταπείνωση, δηλαδή, το να εγκαταλείψει κανείς όλα τα αισθητά και όλα τα λογικά και να βρίσκεται πάνω από αυτά, «εκτός μερίμνης της υπέρ αυτών» (χωρίς να μεριμνά γι’ αυτά). Οι Άγιοι είναι λοιπόν αυτοί που πέρασαν αυτά τα στάδια και έφτασαν στην κατά χάρη θέωση. Και όταν λέμε θέωση τι εννοούμε; Μα εννοούμε την κατάληξη και το σκοπό της υπάρξεως του ανθρώπου, γιατί δεν έχει κανένα άλλο λόγο υπάρξεως ο άνθρωπος.

Γι' αυτό δημιουργήθηκε ο άνθρωπος από το Θεό κατ’ εικόνα και ομοίωση Του.Οι Άγιοι λοιπόν, μετά από την πολλή άσκηση, μετά από την πολλή ταπείνωση, μετά από την πολλή υπομονή τους, δέχτηκαν τη χάρη και το έλεος του Θεού, και εκπλήσσονται από την αγάπη Του και το μέγεθος της ελεημοσύνης Του, και με τη σειρά τους κι εκείνοι αγαπούν και συντρέχουν εμάς τους άλλους, που αναζητούμε τη βοήθειά τους. Γι' αυτό όταν πλησιάζει κανείς τον Άγιο νιώθει ότι εκείνος τον αγαπάει, ότι του δείχνει το δρόμο. Μοιάζει σαν να σου λέει ο Άγιος: «Κοίταξε, είσαι αμαρτωλός, εγώ είμαι πιο αμαρτωλός από σένα, αλλά μην ξεχνάς ένα πράγμα, ότι ο Θεός μας αγαπάει, ο Θεός είναι πατέρας μας και αγαπάει τον καθένα ξεχωριστά με την ίδια αγάπη που αγαπάει ολόκληρη την οικουμένη».

Οι Άγιοι έχουν τη θεία χάρη και κατά τη ζωή τους και μετά το θάνατο τους, εκείνη τη θεία χάρη που τους γέμισε την ψυχή τους, γέμισε και το σώμα τους και γέμισαν και τα άγια λείψανα τους μ’ αυτήν. Και μέσα από αυτή τη χάρη, από την παρουσία των Αγίων, και από τα άγια λείψανα τους, παίρνουμε και εμείς τη βεβαιότητα ότι ο Θεός έγινε άνθρωπος και εθέωσε το ανθρώπινο γένος.

Οι Αγιοι είναι οι Θεολόγοι της εκκλησίας μας. Θεολόγοι στην ορθόδοξη εκκλησία δεν είναι ούτε οι ειδικευμένοι επιστήμονες, ούτε οι διανοητές. Στο Συνοδικό της Ορθοδοξίας υπάρχει μια φράση η οποία επαναλαμβάνεται έξι φορές: «Κατά τας των Αγίων θεοπνεύστους θεολογίας». Δεν λέει σύμφωνα με τις εμπεριστατωμένες μελέτες των ειδικών, ούτε σύμφωνα με τις  βαθυστόχαστες φιλοσοφίες των μεγάλων εγκεφάλων, αλλά λέει σύμφωνα με τις θεόπνευστες θεολογίες των Αγίων, εκείνων που έχουν ζήσει τη ζωή τους σύμφωνα με τις εντολές του Χριστού.

Οι Άγιοι είναι ελεύθεροι, από τα πάθη, τη φαντασία, τους λογισμούς και τις ανθρώπινες ανάγκες και αδυναμίες. Χαρακτηρίζονται από τέλεια ελευθερία, η οποία τους απελευθερώνει από τον κλειστό χώρο του κτιστού και του χρονικού, και τους εισάγει από αυτή τη ζωή στη βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Οι Άγιοι είναι δυνατοί, όμως η δύναμή τους δεν βρίσκεται στο ότι είναι ενάρετοι και έχουν καλές συνήθειες, αλλά στο ότι βρίσκεται ο ίδιος ο Χριστός μέσα τους, ο οποίος τους τρέφει και τους δυναμώνει. Οι Άγιοι είναι όμως ταυτόχρονα και ασθενείς-αδύναμοι, η δύναμη τους «εν ασθενεία τελειούται». Όπως λέει ο Απόστολος Παύλος, η αληθινή του καύχηση δεν είναι ότι αναλήφθηκε μέχρι τον τρίτο ουρανό και είδε τα επουράνια μυστήρια με τη χάρη του Θεού, αλλά ότι υπάρχει μέσα του μια δύναμη η οποία τελειοποιείται με τις ασθένειες. Και λέει: «όταν ασθενώ τότε δυνατός ειμί».

Αδελφοί μου, ο Θεός είναι θεός ζώντων και όχι νεκρών όπως μας είπε ο Κύριός μας. Σ’ αυτούς λοιπόν τους Αγίους που έχουν αξιωθεί να ατενίζουν αιώνια το πρόσωπο του Χριστού, καταφεύγουμε και εμείς και ζητάμε τις προσευχές τους και τη βοήθειά τους για να ανακουφιστούμε από τα διάφορα δεινά που μας βασανίζουν. Ο Αγιος Ιάκωβος γράφει στην επιστολή του ότι: «πολύ ισχύει δέησις δικαίου ενεργουμένη». (η παράκληση του δικαίου έχει πολλή δύναμη και αποτελεσματικότητα). Αν λοιπόν η δέησις ενός αμαρτωλού συνανθρώπου μας έχει δύναμη, πόσο πιο δυνατή είναι η δέησις εκείνων οι οποίοι νίκησαν σ’ αυτή τη ζωή τα πονηρά πνεύματα και τώρα συμμετέχουν στη μακαρία ζωή της Αγίας Τριάδος;

Στην πρώτη θέση ανάμεσα σε όλους αυτούς τους Αγίους στέκεται η Υπεραγία Θεοτόκος, η ακοίμητη Παρηγοριά και Προστασία μας, η Μεσίτρια μας προς τον Θεόν, η οποία συνεχώς ακούει τις δεήσεις μας και πρεσβεύει προς τον Υιόν Της παρακαλώντας γιά την σωτηρία μας και την ανακούφισή μας από τα κακά που μας βασανίζουν. Γι αυτό και εμείς ψάλλουμε: «Πάσαι των Αγγέλων αι στρατιαί, Πρόδρομε Κυρίου, Αποστόλων η δωδεκάς, οι Αγιοι Πάντες μετά της Θεοτόκου ποιήσατε πρεσβείαν εις το σωθήναι ημάς».
