Announcements

We will be decorating the Church for the Nativity after coffee hour today. If you could stay for a bit to help, it would be much appreciated.

Please be sure to return your Stewardship forms as soon as possible.

Also this reminder to return your “commemoration” books. I know there have been requests for more, and I am looking to place an order soon.

I am also looking for a volunteer to write the next issue of our online “newsletter”. Joan Skrobat did a wonderful job with the inaugural edition, but this was never meant to be a one-person commitment. If you are interested in doing a bit of writing for the web site, again, please let me know.

CLINTON FAMILY SERVICE is requesting Christmas presents this year for teenage girls and boys as this age group gets the least amount of gifts. Marlene Melesko will be handing out fliers with a list of requests from the teenagers.  Please bring your unwrapped gifts to the church no later than Sunday, Dec. 14.  Call Marlene with any questions at 860-739-4360.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 8th Tone

From on high didst Thou descend, O Compassionate One; to burial of three days hast Thou submitted that Thou mightest free us from our passions. O our Life and Resurrection, Lord, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for Apostle Andrew the 1st Called in the 4th Tone

As the first-called of the Apostles, and brother of their leader, O Andrew, entreat the Master of all that peace be granted unto the world and great mercy to our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 3rd Tone

On this day the Virgin cometh to the cave to give birth to * God the Word ineffably, * Who was before all the ages. * Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing * the gladsome tidings; * with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him * Who is willing to be gazed on * as a young Child Who * before the ages is God.

Andrew the First- Called Apostle

This Saint was from Bethsaida of Galilee; he was the son of Jonas and the brother of Peter, the chief of the Apostles. He had first been a disciple of John the Baptist; afterwards, on hearing the Baptist's witness concerning Jesus, when he pointed Him out with his finger and said, "Behold the Lamb of God, Which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1.29,36), he straightway followed Christ, and became His first disciple; wherefore he is called the First-called of the Apostles. After the Ascension of the Saviour, he preached in various lands; and having suffered many things for His Name's sake, he died in Patras of Achaia, where he was crucified on a cross in the shape of an "X," the first letter of "Christ" in Greek; this cross is also the symbol of Saint Andrew.

Wisdom of the Fathers

...only he who imitates God is good in will and purpose. For it is the intention of such a person to unite the wicked to Him who is good by nature, so that they too may become good. That is why, though reviled by them, he blesses; persecuted, he endures; vilified, he supplicates (cf. I Cor. 4:12-13); put to death, he prays for them. He does everything so as not to lapse from the purpose of love, which is God Himself.

Fourth Century on Love no. 90, The Philokalia Vol. 2 edited by Palmer, Sherrard and Ware; Faber and Faber pgs. 111-112, 4th Century
