WELCOME TO OUR GUESTS If you are visiting us today, welcome! We often see many guests passing through the area during the summer as Maine is New England’s summer playground. We usually host a fellowship hour after service, but today we will be going down Bangor’s waterfront after church to help support our St. George Folk Festival Food Booth. The venue is within walking distance from the Church and parking is available nearer the venue. If you’d like, come down and visit us there and enjoy a plate of delicious Greek food. Proceeds support our church. The music offered at the venue is an eclectic mix of live folk music. The weather is beautiful, so come on down!
Please note--TUESDAY is a strict fast day this week. Tuesday is the commemoration of the Beheading of St. John the Forerunner. The Church guides us to observe that day solemnly, with a strict fast.
SERVICE FOR THE ECCLESIASTICAL NEW YEAR COMMEMORATED THIS FRIDAY On Thursday evening we will pray Great Vespers to welcome the Church New Year (September 1). On Friday, September 1, we will pray the Orthros at 9AM with Divine Liturgy to follow. God grant us wisdom to seek Him more this year and to grow spiritually as a result. Blessed New Year!

Thanking God and all of you who have been working hard to make this weekend’s Folk Festival Food Booth a success! So far, so good! People have been enthusiastic buyers as is often the case year to year and the food has been great, too! If you’ve not been down to the waterfront yet this weekend, please come down after church this morning. Have a delicious lunch at our St. George Food Booth and enjoy the atmosphere. Please pray for a successful wrap up to this year’s labors that help support our church throughout the year. Special thanks to Lee and Cathy Speronis who undertake a lion’s share of work to bring this event to the Folk Fest venue each year. As they say, it wouldn’t happen without you and that is very true, too! So, thanks to all of you and may God continue to bless our labors this year. Opa!!

WORSHIPING THE TRUE & LIVING GOD Worshiping the Living God, the All-Holy Trinity, is a witness of our faith in and love for Him. The Divine Liturgy is the service of thanksgiving to God. The Divine Liturgy is also the service of particular nurture for the Orthodox Christian--Christ is Present in the elements of Holy Communion. He nurtures those who approach with fear (reverence), faith and love. Those who partake of Communion receive God within. This is a great Mystery, not to be taken lightly, but one that the Orthodox Christian is bid to COME. Please avail yourself of the opportunities to worship the Lord and to receive Him in faith.

VALET PARKING Some parishioners have difficulty walking distances and find it hard to park near enough to the church on Sunday mornings. If this applies to you, please do the following: park in the loading zone in front of the church, and come indoors with your car key and ask in the office for someone to park the car for you and you will be assisted. GREAT VESPERS St. George Church offers Great Vespers at 6PM on any evening before a Divine Liturgy will be served. Each Saturday evening at 6PM, Great Vespers is served in anticipation of Sunday morning’s Divine Liturgy. This will also be true of evenings preceding a major feast. Participation in these services is an opportunity for us to worship corporately and multiply the power of our prayers. If for any reason vespers will not be served, you will receive a message beforehand via the church list-server advising cancellation.

Saint Pimen was from Egypt and shone forth in the ascetical life in Scete in the fourth century; he was renowned for his discretion. Many of his sayings and deeds are preserved in the Paradise of the Fathers and the Sayings of the Fathers.
Little is known of the holy Martyr Phanurius, except that which is depicted concerning his martyrdom on his holy icon, which was discovered in the year 1500 among the ruins of an ancient church on Rhodes, when the Moslems ruled there. Thus he is called "the Newly Revealed." The faithful pray to Saint Phanurius especially to help them recover things that have been lost, and because he has answered their prayers so often, the custom has arisen of baking a Phaneropita ("Phanurius-Cake") as a thanks-offering.

And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.
And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
