USA NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER President Trump has designated today as a National Day of Prayer for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Let us keep these people close in heart with prayer, and let us do what we can practically, as well, to assist. See below.

SUNDAY SCHOOL STARTS September 24 Classes meet right after the Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings. Juniors (ages 8+)—you’ll now be known as GROWING SAINTS. CLEAN SLATES (ages 5-7) will meet with Mrs. Flanzala on the first Sunday of each month. Younger children are welcome, with parental oversight.

GROWING SAINTS--Can you explain what you believe? Every Orthodox Christian can easily explain their Faith by reciting the Nicene Creed. We say it together during every celebration of the Divine Liturgy. But, what does it mean? And where did it come from? Does it even matter? This is what we’ll explore this fall. Join us for the kick-off of Sunday School, September 24.

PARISH FINANCES Things are definitely looking up financially as we reflect on a successful weekend at the St. George Food Booth at the Bangor Folk Festival! Figures will be made available once all expenses are in and accounted for. What we can say is that each day our booth had revenues a little better than last year and that is a plus! BIG THANKS to everyone who worked so hard in/for the success of the booth. You all were awesome! So many positive comments were made, and the “good vibes” were palpable. Orthodox Church tradition encourages Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church to approach the Holy Chalice for Communion... however, if you are not Orthodox, we ask that you please refrain. All worshipers are welcome to receive antidoron (a piece of blessed bread) immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Please stay for fellowship hour that we might get to know you.

WORSHIPING THE TRUE & LIVING GOD Worshiping the Living God, the All-Holy Trinity, is a witness of our faith in and love for Him. The Divine Liturgy is the service of thanksgiving to God. The Divine Liturgy is also the service of particular nurture for the Orthodox Christian--Christ is Present in the elements of Holy Communion. He nurtures those who approach with fear (reverence), faith and love. Those who partake of Communion receive God within. This is a great Mystery, not to be taken lightly, but one that the Orthodox Christian is bid to COME. Please avail yourself of the opportunities to worship the Lord and to receive Him in faith.

GREAT VESPERS St. George Church offers Great Vespers at 6PM on any evening before a Divine Liturgy will be served. Each Saturday evening at 6PM, Great Vespers is served in anticipation of Sunday morning’s Divine Liturgy. This will also be true of evenings preceding a major feast. Participation in these services is an opportunity for us to worship corporately and multiply the power of our prayers. If for any reason vespers will not be served, you will receive a message beforehand via the church list-server advising cancellation.

Anthimus, Bishop of Nicomedea

After the death of the 20,000 Martyrs of Nicomedia, their Bishop Anthimus fled to a certain village to care for his remaining flock. The Emperor Maximian sent men in search of him. When they found him, he promised to show Anthimus to them, but first took them in as guests, fed them, and only then made himself known to them. Amazed at his kindness, the soldiers promised him to tell Maximian that they had not found him. But Anthimus went willingly with them, and converting them by his admonitions, baptized them on the way. He boldly confessed his Faith before Maximian, and after frightful tortures was beheaded in the year 303 or 304.

Holy Father Theoctistus and his fellow struggler Euthymius the Great

Saint Theoctistus, a monk at the Palestinian lavra of Pharan, embraced a more severe life in the wilderness with his friend Saint Euthymius the Great. They founded a monastery, of which Theoctistus was the abbot. He reposed in deep old age in 451.

Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him.
