News, Events and Announcements

SPECIAL COMMEMORATIONS THIS WEEK  Today is the Synaxis of St. John the Forerunner.  Xronia Polla to all who have St. John as their Namesake!  Also, on the Julian calendar, it is the Feast of Christ's Holy Nativity, so it is a blessed day all 'round!  May the effect of these holy-days be felt throughout the world!

PRAYER REQUESTS  Areti will be traveling to Greece this Thursday to assist her family with unexpected illness.  Please pray for Dimitrios, her father, and her brother, Stelios. May a good outcome for all be blessed through your prayers!

And, let's continue to prayerfully support our sister in Christ, Jaye Mendros Goulet of Lewiston.  She is slowly recovering from the effects of a stroke and subsequent surgery.  The family would appreciate prayers to aid in her recovery and well-being.  Jaye is a long-time friend of St. George and she has often blessed our parish with loaves of prosphora on a regular basis.  We are grateful for her love for the Church and for our St. George parish in particular.  Let us offer her our prayers in return and may God raise her up from her sick-bed and restore her health very soon.  Bless, O Lord!

BLESSED HOLY THEOPHANY!  The Feast was celebrated yesterday (Saturday) with the Great Blessing of the Waters.  May God bless us with healing on all levels through the partaking of blessed Holy Water.  Please bring a small container to fill and take home with you.  We are now into the season of house blessings.  If you'd like Fr. to come and bless your home and/or business, you can call him directly (207) 385 3000 and/or send a text to Presbytera (207) 949 2913.  They will work up a schedule to cover all those seeking blessings in the days ahead.  Thank you.

WHO DIDN'T ENJOY THE KALANADA AND VASILOPITA CUTTING LAST SUNDAY?  Thank you to all who made a lovely fellowship hour possible!  Pres. got us started by telling the story of St. Basil and the miracle of the Vasilopita.  Lambros, Kyriakos, Emily, Miltos & Dorothea followed up by singing the traditional kalanda so beautifully!  Our enthusiastic Sunday School provided lively rhythm with instruments brought by Sasha.  Victoria baked a beautiful large loaf of Vasilopita (who received the real silver dime that was in her bread?) and Areti made a first--a gluten free Vasilopita akin to a pound cake that was beyond delicious.  As the kids were gifted by parishioners for their musical efforts, one child exclaimed, "I've never had so much fun at church!" And one of our families commented, "Thank you for a most special St. Basil celebration. Your readings were wonderful and the children had a great time making music while listening to Greek songs. People were so generous with their gifts to the children. What joy on their faces. Thank you! God is good! Glorify Him!"  And a good time was had by all...

UN-DECORATORS WANTED  After services next Sunday, help "un-decorating" the church and the hall would be appreciated.

WE HAVE A MINISTRY FOR A PARISHIONER who doesn't mind computer work and is attentive to detail.  Someone is needed to update and maintain the parish contact list information (names / addresses / phone / email).  If you are interested in providiing this valued assistance, please let Lee or Donna know.

PLEASE HELP ST. GEORGE RAISE A BIT OF EXTRA INCOME by turning in bottles and cans for redemption at Damon's Beverage and Redemption Center at 700 Hogan Road in Bangor.  Last year St. George received just shy of $400 for the year by this redemption method--every little bit helps.  Thank you!

AVOID A WINTER PARKING TICKET by observing city guidelines:  If the day of the week is an even number then we park on the church side of the street.  If the day of the week is an odd number then we park across from the church.  This Sunday is an odd number, park on the opposite side of the street from the church.

HELP FOR OUR NEIGHBORHOOD FOOD PANTRY  The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter (263 Main Street) has reached out to us asking for staple foods for their food pantry which has run low on provisions.  Please add some staple items to your shopping cart weekly for the homeless shelter.  Leave your donation in the church office and we'll see that it gets delivered to them.  Please check out this link to learn more about the shelter's needs and how you can help meet them.  This is our neighborhood and these are our neighbors:  https://www.bangorareashelter.org/support-us/donate-to-the-bangor-area-shelter/

GOD NOTICES  The upkeep of our church shows love for God and the beauty of His house.  When we walk in and see a well kept area, it adds to the reverence we feel for our spiritual home and the welcome it affords those who enter.  Each week after services, vacuuming of the nave and narthex needs to be done. Would volunteers step up and do the vacuuming on Sunday when it's obvious it's not already been done?  It does not need to be the same person every week and can be done before leaving for home.  This ministry is much appreciated.  Most know that the church does not have a janitor and relies on the goodwill of parishioners to keep things looking nice. Thank you to all who will participate.

SPECIAL THANKS to our young adults who often tidy up our sacred space.  We're always grateful for your ministry!

Epistle Reading

Seventh Tone.

Prokeimenon. Seventh Tone. Psalm 63.11,1.
The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord.
Verse: Oh God, hear my cry.

The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 19:1-8.

In those days, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No, we have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism." And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve of them in all. And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, arguing and pleading about the kingdom of God.

Synaxis of John the Holy Glorious Prophet, Baptist, & Forerunner

Synaxis of John the Holy Glorious Prophet, Baptist, & Forerunner
The Reading is from John 1:29-34

At that time, John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.' I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel." And John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God."

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Sixth Tone

Angelic powers appeared at Your tomb, and those guarding it became like dead, and at Your grave Mary was standing, seeking Your most pure body. You plundered Hades, not being tempted by it; You encountered the virgin, granting life. O Lord, who rose from the dead, glory to You!

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Theophany in the First Tone

When Thou wast baptized in the Jordan, O Lord, the worship of the Trinity was made manifest; for the voice of the Father bare witness to Thee, calling Thee His beloved Son. And the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the certainty of the word. O Christ our God, Who hast appeared and hast enlightened the world, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for Synaxis of John the Forerunner in the Second Tone

The memory of the just is celebrated with hymns of praise, but the Lord's testimony is sufficient for thee, O Forerunner; for thou hast proved to be truly even more venerable than the Prophets, since thou was granted to baptize in the running waters Him Whom they proclaimed. Wherefore, having contested for the truth, thou didst rejoice to announce the good tidings even to those in Hades: that God hath appeared in the flesh, taking away the sin of the world and granting us great mercy.

APOLYTIKION FOR ST. GEORGE in the Fourth Tone

AS the Liberator of captives,
and the protector of the poor,
a physician for the ill,
he defender of rulers,
O great Martyr, Saint George, victorious,
pray for us to Christ our God
to save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Tone

You appeared to the world today, and Your light, O Lord, has left its mark upon us. With fuller understanding we sing to You: "You came, You were made manifest, the unapproachable light."
