Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 7th Tone

Thou didst abolish death by Thy Cross; Thou didst open Paradise to the thief; Thou didst transform the myrrh-bearers' lamentation, and didst bid Thine Apostles to preach that Thou art risen, O Christ God, granting great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion of Nativity of the Theotokos in the Fourth Tone

Your birth, O Theotokos, brought joy to the whole world, for from you dawned the sun of righteousness, Christ our God. Freeing us from the curse, He gave us His blessings. Abolishing death, He granted us eternal life.

Tropar Sts. Sergius and Herman of Valaam in the 4th Tone

Ye have been show to be truly obedient to the Gospel of Christ, /
O venerable ones, /
for the sake of the love of Christ /
despising the world and all that is therein /
as though it did not exist; /
and making your abode on an island of the sea, /
ye diligently struggled thereon against the wiles of invisible foes, /
wisely subjecting your flesh to your spirit through fasting, vigil and standing all night. /
Wherefore, from the right hand of the Almighty ye have received fitting crowns. /
And now, standing before the all-holy Trinity, /
O most blessed fathers Sergius and Herman, /
pray ye that the Russian land be preserved //
and our souls be saved.

Kontakion of Nativity of the Theotokos in the Fourth Tone

In your holy birth, Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were rid of the shame of childlessness; Adam and Eve of the corruption of death. And so your people, free of the guilt of their sins, celebrate crying: "The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, who nourishes our life."

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Fifth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:13-35

At that time, two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, "What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?" And they stood still looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see." And he said to them, "O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He appeared to be going further, but they constrained him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?" And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, who said, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. 7th Tone. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:1-10.

BRETHREN, working together with him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Gospel Reading

16th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 25:14-30

The Lord said this parable: "A man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more. So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." As he said these things he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"

THIS WEEKEND! Patronal Feast Day September 23/24

Our patronal feast day of Sts. Sergius & Herman of Valaam will be this weekend. His Emminence Archbishop Peter will preside and we will God willing have a ordination to the diaconate. The meal for the feast will take place in the township hall in South Range.

The greeting of the bishop on Sunday will be at 9:30 AM. You should be in the church before we greet the bishop.

Everyone should make an effort to be part of this patronal feast. A patronal feast is the second highest feast day for a church, right after Pascha. Everyone should also make an effort to confess and commune at this feast day. Confession will be heard during vigil on Saturday night.

Exaltation of the Cross, Wednesday September 27

The Great Feast of the exaltation of the cross is follwing right after our patronal feast day. On Tuesday at 7PM we will have the vigil with the bringing out of the cross. On Wednesday at 7:30 AM we will have the Divine Liturgy.

Stewardship

August 2017

Income: $3,197

Expenses: $2,221

Difference: $976

YearToDate Difference: -$2,912

We are raising funds for our biggest projects in the near future:

  • The renewal of our siding, and improving our insulation on church and rectory to save on heating costs.
  • The install of the dome and three-bar cross we were given the year before last.

To easily contribute to these fundraisers please go to our website ss-sergius-herman-valaam.org

In your charity please remember us to your ability and help this small community.

As you can see we are all over the year still in the red. Reason for this are the two points mentioned under announcement: the new deacon vestments and the unexpected high repair cost for the a/c. We need your help to recover those cost, mainly by your regular tithing to the church and secondly through extra contributions if you are able to. Tithing is a Christian duty and gives back to God what is righly His. It is a scriptual and with that a truely Orthodox principle. In short tithing means that we are giving the 10th of our income back to God., which is actually considered the minimum. It is absolutley fair, because if we have a little income we will give less, if we have more we will give more. God bless everyone who already follows this command, and helps us to keep this church functioning.

If you want to read more about tithing in the Orthodox Church please follow here: http://fatherjohn.blogspot.com/2017/01/stump-priest-tithing.html

Wisdom of the Fathers

This [the Cross] was given to us as a sign on our forehead, just as the circumcision was given to Israel: for by it we believers are separated and distinguished from unbelievers. This is the shield and weapon against, and trophy over, the devil. 'This is the seal that the destroyer may not touch you' (Ex. 12:23), as says the Scripture...The tree of life which was planted by God in Paradise prefigured this precious Cross. For since death was by a tree, it was fitting that life and resurrection should be bestowed by a tree.

An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith, Book 4: Chapter 11; Eerdmans pg. 80, 8th century
