Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Mode

By Your Cross, O Christ our God, You destroyed death. You opened paradise to the thief. You transformed the lament of the Myrrh-bearing women, and You commanded the Apostles to proclaim You are risen, granting the world Your great mercy.

Apolytikion for Apodosis of Epiphany in the First Mode

Lord, when You were baptized in the Jordan, the veneration of the Trinity was revealed. For the voice of the Father gave witness to You, calling You Beloved, and the Spirit, in the guise of a dove, confirmed the certainty of His words. Glory to You, Christ our God, who appeared and enlightened the world.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

You appeared to the world today, and Your light, O Lord, has left its mark upon us. With fuller understanding we sing to You: "You came, You were made manifest, the unapproachable light."

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Tenth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 21:1-14

At that time, Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and He revealed Himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas, called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach, yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there with fish lying on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after He was raised from the dead. .

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13.

BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Epiphany
The Reading is from Matthew 4:12-17

At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Philoptochos will once again sponsor this community event following Divine Liturgy in the fellowship hall. Please join us in celebration as we ring in the New Year while also administering our Philanthropic duties. Each year, we are all called to remember the children living and serviced by St. Basil Academy. In doing so, Philoptochos will be raising funds to support the children by holding a Vasilopita Basket Raffle. With the purchase/donation of each $10 raffle ticket, you will have the chance to win one of the six Vasilopita baskets. Each basket will contain a homemade Vasilopita bread, champagne, and other specialty items to enhance your holiday festivities! With your help from the St. Luke community, our chapter here at St. Luke can offer hope while spreading an abundance of joy and love to these special children. Raffle tickets will continue to be available after liturgy.

There’s Still Time TODAY! To support the children at St. Basil Academy!

Did you know?

In March 1944, The Philoptochos Society purchased the 250-acre Rupert Estate in Garrison, New York, located on the shores of the Hudson River, directly across from the United States Military Academy at West Point. With that purchase and establishment of the Academy of St. Basil, Philoptochos undertook the lasting commitment to the children who reside there. TODAY, Philoptochos remains a significant financial supporter of the Academy through two ministry commitments:

Vasilopita: Held in January by every chapter in the United States, this event provides a major funding source for the Academy’s operating expenses.

Sisterhood: The Sisterhood Fund provides for the ongoing needs of the children of the Academy, such as clothing, furnishings, equipment, and other essentials for the dormitories and kitchen, as well as support for Graduation ceremonies and special awards for students.

TODAY as we celebrate Vasilopita Sunday together as a parish, please know that Philoptochos is grateful to the many parishioners who so generously participated in today’s raffle drawing, coffee hour, and the monetary donations throughout the year that keep our chapter here at St. Luke able to contribute year after year to such a historic accomplishment founded by the Philoptochos ministry.

Words from the Saints and our Fathers

Words from our Fathers

11/19/2023

You give what God’s given you.

If God wants, He will take it all away from you in a couple of minutes.

What God’s given to you, in His providence, you pass it on. It’s not yours; God gave it to you; and you won’t take it with you. You’re managing it, you can’t have it with you in eternity.

So make sure you make good [spiritual] investments.

Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol

The Holy Fathers slain at Sinai and Raitho

As for the holy Martyrs of Sinai and Raithu, those of Sinai contested during the reign of Diocletian, about the year 296; those of Raithu were slain about the middle of the fifth century. On both occasions, the perpetrators of these massacres were a barbarian tribe called Blemmyes, from the parts of Arabia and Egypt.

Because of the Apodosis of the Feast of Holy Theophany also on the 14th of January, the liturgical services to the Holy Fathers slain at Sinai and Raitho are transferred to January 13th.

Wisdom of the Fathers

For as persons not even knowing where to put a step forward, so they sat, overtaken by the darkness.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 14 on Matthew 4, 4th Century

Take heed, then, often to come together to give thanks to God, and show forth His praise. For when ye assemble frequently in the same place, the powers of Satan are destroyed, and the destruction at which he aims is prevented by the unity of your faith.
St. Ignatius of Antioch
Epistle to the Ephesians Ch. 13, 2nd century
