Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council

On the Sunday that falls on or immediately after the eleventh of this month, we chant the Service to the 350 holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which gathered in Nicaea in 787 under the holy Patriarch Tarasius and during the reign of the Empress Irene and her son, Constantine Porphyrogenitus, to refute the Iconoclast heresy, which had received imperial support beginning with the Edict issued in 726 by Emperor Leo the Isaurian. Many of the holy Fathers who condemned Iconoclasm at this holy Council later died as Confessors and Martyrs for the holy Icons during the second assult of Iconoclasm in the ninth century, especially during the reigns of Leo the Armenian and Theophilus.

Philip the Apostle of the 70, one of the 7 Deacons

Saint Philip, who had four daughters that prophesied, was from Caesarea of Palestine. He preached throughout Samaria; it was he also who met the eunuch of Candace, the Queen of the Ethiopians, as the eunuch was reading the Prophet Esaias, and he instructed and baptized him (Acts 8:26-39). He reposed in Tralles of Asia Minor while preaching the Gospel.

Symeon the New Theologian

Saint Symeon became a monk of the Studite Monastery as a young man, under the guidance of the elder Symeon the Pious. Afterwards he struggled at the Monastery of Saint Mamas in Constantinople, of which he became abbot. After enduring many trials and afflictions in his life of piety, he reposed in 1022. Marvelling at the heights of prayer and holiness to which he attained, and the loftiness of the teachings of his life and writings, the church calls him "the New Theologian." Only to two others, John the Evangelist and Gregory, Patriarch of Constantinople, has the church given the name "Theologian." Saint Symeon reposed on March 12, but since this always falls in the Great Fast, his feast is kept today.

Chryssi the New Martyr of Greece

"Born in the village of Slatina in the Meglin region [of Bulgaria], of poor peasants who had three other daughters, St Zlata was a meek and devout girl, wise with Christ's wisdom and golden ('zlata' means 'gold') not only in name but also in her God-fearing heart. When Zlata went out one day to get water, some shameless Turks seized her and carried her off to their house. When one of them urged her to embrace Islam and become his wife, Zlata answered fearlessly: 'I believe in Christ, and know Him alone as my bridegroom; I shall never deny Him even if you put me to a thousand tortures and cut me into pieces.' Her parents and sisters then arrived, and said to her: 'O our daughter, have mercy on yourself and us. Deny Christ publicly, that we can all be happy. Christ is merciful; He will forgive your sin, committed under the pressure of life.' Her poor parents and kinsfolk wept bitterly. But Zlata's heroic soul would not be overcome by devilish seduction. She replied to her parents: 'When you urge me to deny Christ, the true God, you are no longer parents or sisters to me; I have the Lord Jesus Christ as father, the Mother of God as mother and, for brothers and sisters, the saints.' Then the Turks threw her into prison, where she lay for three months, and they took her out every day and flogged her until her blood flowed onto the ground. Finally, they hanged her upside-down and made a fire to choke her to death with the smoke. But God was with Zlata, and gave her strength in her suffering. At the very end, they hanged her from a tree and cut her into small pieces. Thus this martyr-maiden gave her soul into God's hands, and entered into the realm of Paradise, in 1796. Pieces of her relics were taken by Christians to their homes, that they might bring a blessing to them." (Prologue)

Nazarius, Gervasius, Protasius, & Celsus of Milan

The holy Martyrs all contested for piety's sake in Milan; after the passage of much time their holy relics were discovered and given honourable burial by Saint Ambrose.

October 15

Lucian the Martyr of Antioch

This Saint was from Samosata, the son of pious parents. He established a catechetical school in Antioch, and taught the correct doctrines of the Faith and made clear the parts of the divine Scriptures that were difficult to understand. He edited the Old Testament translation from the Hebrew tongue, and published it in an excellent edition, free from every heretical corruption and interpolation. He travelled to Nicomedia to strengthen the faithful there in their contests for Christ, and was accused before Maximinus, with whom he conversed openly. When he had made a defence of the Christian Faith, he was condemned to imprisonment where, in 311, he died of hunger and thirst.

Longinus the Centurion

This Martyr was in the service of Pontius Pilate at the time of Christ our Saviour's Passion. While standing guard at the Cross and beholding the earthquake and all that came to pass, he cried out with fear, "Truly this was the Son of God" (Matt. 27:54). After the Resurrection, he forsook the military and departed for Cappadocia, his homeland, where he preached Christ. By the agency of Pontius Pilate, Tiberius Caesar had him arrested and beheaded.

Hosea the Prophet

According to some, Hosea, whose name means "God is help," was from the tribe of Issachar, or more likely, from that of Reuben; he was the son of Beeri. He is the first in order of the twelve minor Prophets and the most ancient of all. He prophesied in the days of the divided Kingdom; the Lord told him to take a harlot to wife (Hosea 1:2), and then an adulteress (ibid., 3:1). The harlot, a known sinner, was a figure of the Kingdom of Israel in Samaria, which openly worshipped idols; the adulteress, lawfully married yet sinning secretly with her lovers, was a figure of the Kingdom of Judah in Jerusalem, which, while having the Temple, and the priesthood, and the divine worship according to the Law, stealthily served the idols also. The Prophet Hosea prophesied for sixty years, and lived for some ninety years, from 810 to 720 B.C. His book is divided into fourteen chapters.

Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned.

When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful.

And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." Parish News and Events

Blessing of our Church Musicians

It is a tradition in our Archdiocese to bless our Church Musicians on the Sunday after the Feast of St. Romanos, the patron of Church Musicians. Even though our choir has not started back in full force, our chanters have continued to lead the singing of our beautiful hymns; they have been joined by voices throughout our scattered congregation. We pray one day soon our whole choir will be able once again to lead us in singing the praises of God.

Because the blessing was passed over last week, this week at the end of Liturgy today, we ask that all our church musicians present come forward (keeping appropriate spacing) to receive the blessing in the name of all our church musicians. May God bless their continued labor for His glory!

Fellowship Hour

No Fellowship Hour this week. The Church Hall will be abuzz with activity, preparing, bagging and distributing this month's Greek meal! We will be back together next week.

Services this Week

Our Weekday Liturgy this week is our celebration of the Holy Martyr Longinus the Centurion (the Centurion at our Lord's crucifixion) on Friday, October 16 at 10:00 am. We will be welcoming Fr. Gregory Potter, who will be celebrating the Divine Liturgy with us.

This Wednesday, our 2nd Wednesday of the month Paraklesis Service, we will celebrate the Paraklesis to the Holy Belt (Agia Zoni) of the Theotokos at 10:00 am. Please contact Father with the names of those you would like prayed for during this service. The Theotokos left us her holy belt as a sign of her continual protection and love for her children. We need her prayers especially in these days of greater diabolical attacks on our Church and society.

Teaching Liturgies

The month of October brings us to our annual formal teaching Liturgies. As in the past, we will divide the teaching part of the Liturgy up into four parts, each for one of the Sundays of October. During the teaching section, Father will stop at various points and explain some historical and theological aspects of prayers or rituals. It is vital for a fruitful praying of the Liturgy that we understand what it is that we are praying for and why we do some things that we do. Please make an effort to be present for these Liturgies to gain a greater appreciation for the most important thing that we can do as human beings!

Orthodox Book Club

Our Book Club is moving on to a new book: The Gurus, the Young Man, and Elder Paisios. We meet on Thursdays at 7:30 pm on line. If you would like to read and discuss this fascinating book, please tell Father so you can receive an invitation to join the on-line discussion.

Re-Catechism Sessions

We have brought our session on Modern Orthodox Saints to a conclusion. Now we turn our sites to our next session The Church in the World: How to Approach Modern Questions with an Ancient Faith. We will be discussing sections of the recent publication For the Life of the World: Towards a Social Ethos of the Orthodox Church, approved by the Patriarch and the Holy Synod. The text presents an Orthodox approach to contemporary questions. The text will provide material for a robust discussion, both about the approach taken by the authors and about the Orthodox view of these questions. You can find a copy of the text (you can choose either English or Greek!) at https://www.goarch.org/social-ethos.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 20 at 7:00 pm . on Zoom, and we will meet every other week for 8 sessions. If you do not have zoom or internet access, there is the ability to join on telephone. If you would like to join but do not have internet access, please speak with Father.

A Special Visit

We will be having our weekday Liturgy next week on Friday, October 16 in memory of the martyr Longinus the Centurion. We will be having a special visitor that day. You may remember the young Subdeacon who spent the summer with us. Now, Fr. Gregory Potter will be joining us for Liturgy on October 16 to celebrate Liturgy with us! We will also get to meet Presbytera. Please join us that day to welcome Father and Presbytera!

Our Virtual Festival

Because of present circumstances we are not able to have our annual Greek Food Festival, which provides a large part of our budget for the endfing of the year. We are trying to replace this income with our monthly meals. Another way is to buy a virtual piece of the Festival. This is our normal way of raising needed funds for the Festival and trying to make it as profitable as possible. If you are a regular buyer of a piece of the Festival, please consider doing that again this year; if you aren't this year would be a great one to do that. You received the information in the mail; you can also find it in the Bulletin inserts part of this Bulletin. Thank you once again for your faithfulness and generosity.

Please Remember the Poor

Because we have been away from our church building for so many months, our supply of food for the food pantry has dwindled to almost nothing. Please remember once again to do your Lazaros shopping when you are out! If even a few people bring a few things, we will have an abundance to help those in need.
