Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 4th Tone

Τὸ φαιδρὸν τῆς Ἀναστάσεως κήρυγμα, ἐκ τοῦ Ἀγγέλου μαθοῦσαι αἱ τοῦ Κυρίου Μαθήτριαι, καὶ τὴν προγονικὴν ἀπόφασιν ἀπορρίψασαι, τοῖς Ἀποστόλοις καυχώμεναι ἔλεγον· Ἐσκύλευται ὁ θάνατος, ἠγέρθη Χριστὸς ὁ Θεός, δωρούμενος τῷ κόσμῳ τὸ μέγα ἔλεος.
When the tidings of the Resurrection from the glorious angel was proclaimed unto the women disciples and our ancestral sentence also had been abolished to the Apostles with boasting did they proclaim that death is vanquished evermore and Christ our God is risen from the dead and granted to the world His great mercy.

The Holy Martyrs Felix, Regula and Exuperantius in the 4th Tone

Your Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for You, received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from You our immortal God. Theodora of Alexandria

This saint lived in the fifth century. Out of remorse for the adultery that she committed with another man, she fled from her husband's house, renamed herself Theodore, clothed herself as a man, and pretending to be a eunuch, entered a monastery of men. Her identity as a woman was discovered only after her death.

Euphrosynos the Cook

His icon is found in countless Orthodox kitchens. A simple and holy man, when he entered monastic life in Alexandria he was judged unfit for any service more demanding than kitchen work. There he labored without complaint, looked down upon by most of the other monks. One night the abbot dreamed that he was in Paradise, and there met Euphrosynos, who gave him a branch that bore three fragrant apples. Awakening, the abbot found the same apples on his pillow. He hurried to find Euphrosynos and asked him, `Where were you last night, brother?' Euphrosynos only replied, `Where were you, Father?' The abbot gathered the monks and told them the wonderful story, by which they all realized the cook's holiness. But Euphrosynos, unwilling to endure the praise of men, fled the monastery for the desert.

Felix, Regula, and Exsuperantius of Zurich

Felix and Regula were siblings, and members of the Theban legion under Saint Maurice, stationed in Agaunum in the Valais. When the legion was to be executed in 286, they fled, reaching Zürich via Glarus before they were caught, tried and executed. After decapitation, they miraculously stood to their feet, picked up their own heads, walked forty paces uphill, and prayed before lying down in death. They were buried on the spot where they lay down, on the hilltop which would become the site of the Grossmünster.

Cornelius the Centurion & Martyr

Saint Cornelius was a Roman by race, a pagan by religion, a centurion in rank, an inhabitant of Caesarea of Palestine, a man pious and God-fearing who gave many alms to the people and prayed continually unto God. In accordance with an angelic vision granted to him, he sent to Joppa that they might bring the Apostle Peter. Saint Peter catechized him in the Faith of Christ and baptized all his household (Acts, ch.10). This became the beginning and the first fruits of the calling of the nations. It is said that, after this, he became a bishop, as some say, of Caesarea; but others say of Scepsis, which is not far from Troas; and that he died as a martyr.

The Consecration of the Church of the Holy Resurrection (Holy Sepulchre)

The church that is honoured far above all others is that of the Holy Resurrection, which Saint Constantine the Great constructed at the place of Golgotha, where our Saviour was crucified and buried. For a long time this place had been purposely buried beneath the earth by the Jews and heathen; furthermore, during the reign of Hadrian (117-138), a temple dedicated to Aphrodite was built over the site so that this sacred place might be even further desecrated and fall into utter oblivion. It was here that the Cross was hidden. However, at the command of the pious Emperor Constantine, excavations were made and the tokens of the saving Passion were found. It was here, then, that the very great and magnificent temple named in honour of Christ God's Resurrection-the Anastasis-was built under the supervision of the blessed Helen, while Dracilian was Eparch of Palestine and Macarius was Archbishop of Jerusalem. It was the latter, also, who exalted the venerable Cross and performed the consecration of this temple in the year 336.

The Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross

Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, when she was already advanced in years, undertook, in her great piety, the hardships of a journey to Jerusalem in search of the cross, about the year 325. A temple to Aphrodite had been raised up by the Emperor Hadrian upon Golgotha, to defile and cover with oblivion the place where the saving Passion had been suffered. The venerable Helen had the statue of Aphrodite destroyed, and the earth removed, revealing the Tomb of our Lord, and three crosses. Of these, it was believed that one must be that of our Lord, the other two of the thieves crucified with Him; but Saint Helen was at a loss which one might be the Wood of our salvation. At the inspiration of Saint Macarius, Archbishop of Jerusalem, a lady of Jerusalem, who was already at the point of death from a certain disease, was brought to touch the crosses, and as soon as she came near to the Cross of our Lord, she was made perfectly whole. Consequently, the precious Cross was lifted on high by Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem; as he stood on the ambo, and when the people beheld it, they cried out, "Lord have mercy." It should be noted that after its discovery, a portion of the venerable Cross was taken to Constantinople as a blessing. The rest was left in Jerusalem in the magnificent church built by Saint Helen, until the year 614. At that time, the Persians plundered Palestine and took the Cross to their own country (see Jan. 22, Saint Anastasius the Persian). Late, in the year 628, Emperor Heraclius set out on a military campaign, retrieved the Cross, and after bringing it to Constantinople, himself escorted it back to Jerusalem, where he restored it to its place.

Rest from labour. A Fast is observed today, whatever day of the week it may be.

Nikitas the Great Martyr

This Saint was of high birth among the Goths beyond the Danube River. He was taken by Athanaric, pagan ruler of the Goths, and after being tortured, was burned to death for his confession of Christ. According to some, this took place during the reign of Saint Constantine the Great; according to others, under the Emperor Gratian.

Euphemia the Great Martyr

Saint Euphemia was from Chalcedon and lived in virginity. According to some, she suffered martyrdom during the reign of Diocletian, in 303; according to others, in 307. Her sacred relics are preserved in the Patriarchate in Constantinople.

Sophia
September 17

Sophia & her three daughters: Faith, Hope, and Love

These Saints were from Italy and contested for the Faith about the year 126, during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian. Faith was twelve years old, Hope, ten, and Love, nine; each was tormented and then beheaded, from the eldest to the youngest. Their mother Sophia mourned at their grave for three days, where she also fell asleep in peace; because of her courageous endurance in the face of her daughters' sufferings, she is also counted a martyr. The name Sophia means "wisdom" in Greek; as for her daughters' names, Faith, Hope, and Love (Charity), they are Pistis, Elpis, and Agape in Greek, and Vera, Nadezhda, and Lyubov in Russian.

The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

Fellowship Hour

There are many empty spaces on the Fellowship Hour sign-up sheet. Please choose a date to sponsor Fellowship. You can offer it together with other family members or friends!

If you would like to put on a coffee hour (for example, for a memorial) but you are unable to do so, please talk to Presbytera, and we will help you put together a simple Coffee Hour. There are many empty spots till the end of the year. Please check out the schedule and sign up for a Fellowship Hour!

Holy Land Trip

Would you be interested in a 10 day trip to the Holy Land? We have an opportunity to join a trip led by Fr. Ilya Gotlinsky, an Orthodox Priest from the OCA and travel guide, from May 1 to 13. The present cost of the trip is $2,900 per person for double occupancy (you can request single occupancy for an extra fee), not including air fare. Fr. Ilya has constructed the itinerary himself, and has geared it to an Orthodox audience. 

If you are interested, there will be a couple of informational meetings in the next couple months. The first meeting will be on Thursday, September 15, at 7:00 pm. Anyone interested in finding out more about the trip should come; if you cannot come, there will be other meetings. This is a special opportunity for our parish to join fellow Orthodox in visiting the places where our Lord, the Panagia, the Apostles and the first Christians lived and walked!

Regular Liturgy Time Resumes in September

Today September 11 (the Sunday after Labor Day), we will resume our regular schedule: 9:00 am Orthros (no Orthros today!); 10:00 am Divine Liturgy.

The Blessings of September

We have two special blessings this September, to remind of us God’s renewal of creation and His active presence in our lives: on September 11, the children should bring their backpacks for a special blessing for the new school year; on September 17 at 3:00 pm in front of the Parish House, we will bless our beloved pets, the part of creation closest to our hearts.

 Let's Be Cool in 2023!

Thanks to the great generosity of a Parish Family Member, we have the opportunity to make a considerable dent in our bank loan as well as to collect some money to put in air conditioning and start the next phase of our church building renovation. Our generous donor has challenged us; the donation will match what we collect up to $30,000! But we need to do it by December 1. Please get your donations in to the church office or to a Council Member as soon as possible. A thermometer chart in the church hall will be keeping track of our donations.

Sunday School Raffle

Tickets will be on sale for a raffle for the Sunday School. Tickets are 1 for $1; 6 for $5. The prize is a beautiful hand made Afghan by Theopoula Tsaros. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. The Sunday School begins on Sunday, September 18; the Children's Sermon will begin again, and the children will take part in the procession of the Cross. Classes will begin Sunday, September 25; the children will leave with their teachers after Communion (please let the children go first!).

Greektoberfest

Soon it will be time to put on your foustinella or lederhosen to celebrate Greektoberfest on Saturday, October 29 from 6-10 pm. Tickets are $25 per person; children under 18 are free. Enjloy a great buffet of German and Greek specialties, Greek and German desserts, and Greek and German music (you can dance if you like!). You can get tickets from a Council Member.

Greek Classes in the Fall

We are in the process of organizing a fledgling Greek School. There will be classes for children, adult conversation classes, and a class for Biblical Greek. There is a registration form in the bulletin. Please return it to Father or the Church Office as soon as possible.

September Greek Meal to Go

Today is the pick up day for the September Greek Meal to Go. If you have not ordered your meal, there may be some extras for purchase (first come, first served!). Talk to a Council member if you are interested
