Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 1st Tone

Sunday of Orthodoxy

For more than one hundred years the Church of Christ was troubled by the persecution of the Iconoclasts of evil belief, beginning in the reign of Leo the Isaurian (717-741) and ending in the reign of Theophilus (829-842). After Theophilus's death, his widow the Empress Theodora (celebrated Feb. 11), together with the Patriarch Methodius (June 14), established Orthodoxy anew. This ever-memorable Queen venerated the icon of the Mother of God in the presence of the Patriarch Methodius and the other confessors and righteous men, and openly cried out these holy words: "If anyone does not offer relative worship to the holy icons, not adoring them as though they were gods, but venerating them out of love as images of the archetype, let him be anathema." Then with common prayer and fasting during the whole first week of the Forty-day Fast, she asked God's forgiveness for her husband. After this, on the first Sunday of the Fast, she and her son, Michael the Emperor, made a procession with all the clergy and people and restored the holy icons, and again adorned the Church of Christ with them. This is the holy deed that all we the Orthodox commemorate today, and we call this radiant and venerable day the Sunday of Orthodoxy, that is, the triumph of true doctrine over heresy.

Annunciation of the Theotokos

Six months after John the Forerunner's conception, the Archangel Gabriel was sent by God to Nazareth, a town of Galilee, unto Mary the Virgin, who had come forth from the Temple a mature maiden (see Nov. 21). According to the tradition handed down by the Fathers, she had been betrothed to Joseph four months. On coming to Joseph's house, the Archangel declared: "Rejoice, thou Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." After some consideration, and turmoil of soul, and fear because of this greeting, the Virgin, when she had finally obtained full assurance concerning God's unsearchable condescension and the ineffable dispensation that was to take place through her, and believing that all things are possible to the Most High, answered in humility: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." And at this, the Holy Spirit came upon her, and the power of the Most High overshadowed her all-blameless womb, and the Son and Word of God, Who existed before the ages, was conceived past speech and understanding, and became flesh in her immaculate body (Luke 1:26-38).

Bearing in her womb the Uncontainable One, the blessed Virgin went with haste from Nazareth to the hill country of Judea, where Zacharias had his dwelling; for she desired to find Elizabeth her kinswoman and rejoice together with her, because, as she had learned from the Archangel, Elizabeth had conceived in her old age. Furthermore, she wished to tell her of the great things that the Mighty One had been well-pleased to bring to pass in her, and she greeted Elizabeth and drew nigh to her. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, she felt her six-month-old babe, Saint John the Baptist, prophesied of the dawning of the spiritual Sun. Immediately, the aged Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and recognized her as the Mother of her Lord, and with a great voice blessed her and the Fruit that she held within herself. The Virgin also, moved by a supernatural rejoicing in the spirit, glorified her God and Savior, saying: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour," and the rest, as the divine Luke hath recorded (1:39-55)

This martyr was the servant of a certain Jewish woman named Pantilla, the wife of the Governor of Thessalonica. When Matrona refused to follow her mistress into the synagogue Pantilla beat her so severly that she died in a few days, and thus received the crown of her confession.

John Climacus the Righteous, author of The Divine Ladder of Ascent

This Saint gave himself over to the ascetical life from his early youth. Experienced both in the solitary life of the hermit and in the communal life of cenobitic monasticism, he was appointed Abbot of the Monastery at Mount Sinai and wrote a book containing thirty homilies on virtue. Each homily deals with one virtue, and progressing from those that deal with holy and righteous activity (praxis) unto those that deal with divine vision (theoria), they raise a man up as though by means of steps unto the height of Heaven. For this cause his work is called "The Ladder of Divine Ascent." The day he was made Abbot of Sinai, the Prophet Moses was seen giving commands to those who served at table. Saint John reposed in 603, at eighty years of age. See also the Fourth Sunday of the Fast.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:24-26, 32-40.

Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered abuse suffered for the Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he looked to the reward.

And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated -- of whom the world was not worthy -- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Fellowship Hour

Today's Fellowship Hour is offered by the Condodemetraky family in memory of Susan Condodemetraky.

If you are planning to host a Fellowship Hour after a Memorial Service, Please make sure to sign up on the Felllowship Hour sheet on the bulletin board well in advance. Otherwise the Fellowship Hour Team will plan the Fellowship Hour for that day.

On most regular Sundays, there will be a basket out to receive your generous offering for the substantial Fellowship offerings you partake of. This money will be used to pay for the ingredients needed to make our monthly sandwiches for the guests at the McKenna House. Please remember to be as generous as possible!

If you would like to put on a coffee hour (for example, for a memorial) but you are unable to do so, please talk to Presbytera, and we will help you put together a simple Coffee Hour. There are many empty spots till the end of the year. Please check out the schedule and sign up for a Fellowship Hour.

Fresh Prosphora

Could you make some fresh prosphora (bread for Communion)? Instead of defrosting frozen breads, we would like to start having fresh bread for the Divine Liturgy. We need two or three loaves; they could be left at the church on Fridays between 3 and 4 pm or on Saturdays (Please let Father know what time you could come so someone can be there to let you in if you do not have a key). If you need a seal and/or a recipe, please sign up on the sheet in the church hall. Please, do not just wait and see "when it is needed." It's needed every Sunday, so please just sign up in the next slot if you want to make it!

Offering the bread for the Liturgy is a very special ministry, but one that anyone can do. The breads do not have to be perfect, just made with love for God and others! If you need a recipe and/or a seal, we can provide one.

Lenten Needs

As always, we have need of donations for flowers for the first 5 Fridays of Lent for the Salutations and the Akathist Hymn. We are asking $45 for each icon. We will also be needing daffodils for the 3rd Sunday of Lent (Veneration of the Cross), a donation of $100. The palms for Palm Sunday are more expensive than usual because the company needs to have a special shipment, since our Palm Sunday falls a month after that of most of their clients. The cost of the Palms is $274; even a partial donation towards this will be helpful. Thank you!

April Greek Meal to Go

You are invited to enjoy our April Greek Meal to Go; pick up is Sunday, April 14 from 12 noon to 1:00 (the order cutoff date is Wednesday, April 10. April's meal is vegetarian stuffed peppers and tomatoes, potatoes, and a roll. The cost of the meal is $20. Great Vespers for Sunday

Orthodoxy is not a "Sunday morning only" way of life. An important part of our liturgical celebration of our Lord's resurrection every Sunday is the celebration of Great Vespers the evening before. In order to get us back into this practice, we are celebrating Great Vespers on 2 Saturdays each month. Yesterday evening was our first. Our next Great Vespers will be next Saturday, April 6, at 5:00 pm. This is a beautiful and not very long service. We hope to see you there on the 23rd!

District 1 Lenten Retreat

Everyone from District 1 (that's our district in the Metropolis) is invited for a Lenten Retreat at Assumption Church in Manchester on Friday, March 29. We will all be celebrating the Salutations together at 6:00 pm, followed by a Lenten dinner with a speaker to follow. There will be programs for GOYA and JOY children; the GOYA young people are invited to have a sleep over until 11:00 am Saturday. If you are interested in taking part, please let Father know before March 25.

Philoptochos Bake Sale

The Philoptochos Ladies will be having a pre-order Pastry Sale on Saturday, March 30 (western Holy Saturday) from 11 am to 3 pm. Call in orders at 603-225-2961 or by email: ordermygreekpastries@gmail.com. Pastries will also be available for purchase the day of the sale. The cut-off for ordering is March 16.

The baking workshops are posted in the Church Hall. Please sign up to help produce the delicious pastries to sell.

Upcoming Silent Auction

The Outreach Ministries is hosting a Silent Auction in May after Pascha. The items will be open for bidding for four Sundays during Fellowship Hour. In order to have an exciting Silent Auction, we need a number of items for bidding. We are hoping our Parish Family will help out by asking for gift certificates from your favorite businesses or by offering your own gift certificates for some item or service you can offer (like a gift certificate for 2 hours of lawn work or for some homemade jewelry or for a tray of your Greek cookie specialty or of spanakopita, etc.). If you can help out in this, please see Elena Newman.

Men Can Cook Too: Holy Trinity Concord Cookbook, dedicated to the men of the Community.
We would like this to be not only a great cookbook, but also a way to remember members of our Parish.

Gentlemen, we are looking for your recipes! Of course women can and should also send in recipes. Recipes should be dedicated to men (e.g. something your husband, dad, etc. likes or liked to cook or eat). Ideally the recipe should be accompanied by a few words and/or photo (e.g. this is my husband‘s favorite Lenten dish. Every birthday my dad wanted to eat this cake. My papou always had these koulourakia for breakfast, etc.). Recipes should reflect the diversity of our community. We are not looking exclusively for Greek recipes. If you are interested in being part of the Cookbook Committee to work on some aspect of it, please see Presbytera.

 An Appeal from the Outreach Ministries

The Outreach Ministries are continuing to collect warm blankets, dark warm socks, and a new item--hand warmers. Extra winter coats are also always welcome. The food collection as well is always going on. Thank you from the least of your brothers and sisters for your generosity!

We are also in need for more items for the Blessing Bags: shampoo, body wash or soap, granola bars, and dark warm socks. Do you have a Blessing Bag in your car? If not, make sure to pick one (or more!) up on your way out of the Church Hall.

Can You Help with a Strategic Plan for our Parish?

Our two task forces: (Stewardship and Engagement in Ministry, and Liturgical Engagement and Education) have competed the first stage of preparing the Strategic Plan for our Parish. The next step is the final polishing of the plan. This will take place on Saturday, April 6 beginning with lunch at noon and going until 4:30. Even if you have not been part of this undertaking, we are going to need more involvement for the step and the next phase. Please come and join in this exciting time for the future of our Parish Family!
