Stewardship: Giving to God What Belongs to God - Part Eight

Ten Can Equal Four

And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying "Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more."  His master said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master."  And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, "Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more."  His master said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master."

Matthew 25:19-23

Good morning Prayer Team!

One of the most comforting lessons coming out of the Parable of the Talents is that the master is equally pleased with the servant who had made the ten talents and the one who had made the four talents.  In contemporary society, we are obsessed with the idea that more is better.  For instance, the better paying job is considered the more prestigious job.  And our desire for material gain is almost insatiable.  We want bigger houses and more powerful cars, and luxuries, etc.

If this parable played out on contemporary society, we would think that the master would be MORE pleased with the servant who had ten talents than the one who had four, simply because he had more.  In the eyes of God, they were equal.

Let's for a moment, change the numbers.  Let's say that the servant started off with the five talents made one more and ended up with six.  And let's say that the servant who started out with the two talents made four.  In contemporary society, the one with six would be considered greater than the one with four, simply because he had more.  In the eyes of God, the one with six would be considered a failure.  Because he started out with five, God would expect ten talents.

In the eyes of God, more is not necessarily better.  Because with God, it's the effort that counts.  The servant with five doubled what he had been given.  The servant with two doubled what he had been given.  If the servant who had been given one would have ended up with two, instead of burying what he had received, he, too, would have been rewarded equally with the others.

God expects us to do our best with what we have been given.  He doesn't expect the person with one talent to make ten.  He expect him to make two.  He won't be satisfied if the one with five ends up with six even if he ends up with the most at the end, because he didn't offer his best with what he had been given.

Therefore, it doesn't matter if we are a famous doctor, or an obscure sanitation engineer, a popular teacher or a solitary truck driver-If we are doing the best with what we've been given, this is what pleases God.

One of the mottos I use to live my life by is "The best I can with what I have on a given day." This means that I must seek to do the best I can with what I have, not with what anyone else has.  I can only use my talents, not someone else's.  And I have a given day on which to use my talents.  I can't use my talents yesterday, and there is no guarantee I can use them tomorrow.  The best I can with what I have can only be done on this day that I have been given.

Another motto that I have use is the "God rewards effort, not success."  Because sometimes despite our best efforts, we do not enjoy success.  And some people enjoy success but only because they've cheated to get it.  God knows our efforts and blesses them more so than our successes.

We shouldn't compare or focus our thoughts on how we stand with our talents in comparison with other people.  If we've got one talent, He expects us to make two, not ten.  We've got to do the best we can with what we've been given.  This is what pleases God.

In Thee, O Lord, do I see refuge; let me never be put to shame; in Thy righteousness deliver me!  Incline Thy ear to me, rescue me speedily!  Be Thou a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me!  Yea, Thou art my rock and my fortress; for Thy name's sake lead me and guide me, take me out of the net which is hidden for me, for Thou art my refuge.  Into Thy hand I commit my spirit; Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.  Psalm 31:1-5

Do the best you can with what you have today!

Dormition Fast Study - Our Most Holy Theotokos

 August 3rd and 10th, 2018 - 10:30am Sharp

How much do we really know about the Theotokos, especially after her Son and our Christ's Resurrection?  What was her life like after that?  Did she travel?  What did she do?  How do we honor her?

This study will explore some of these questions, particularly focusing on the Paraklesis or Small Supplicatory Canon which is chanted to her in our church most weekday evenings during the Dormition Lenten Period.

Please join us for the brief study honoring the Theotokos!

A Lenten lucheon will follow the study.  Please bring a Lenten dish as you are able.

Everyone is welcome!  Bring a friend!

In the Hospital? Home-Bound?

Please let the Church Office know!  In today’s age of information privacy, churches are not notified when parishioners are admitted to hospitals, nursing homes or other care facilities. Both those facilities and your church depend on having the church notified by a friends or family member so pastoral care and outreach can be offered. The same goes for those homebound. If you or any of your loved ones are in any of these situations, please contact the Church Office at 973-584-0388  to request a visit from our priest Fr. John Theodosion or our new and wonderful Visitation Ministry. About Cirque Italia..

At Cirque Italia, the high-energy acts swing from ropes, flip over trapezes, and zip by on BMX bikes and rollerskates — pushing the boundaries of human ability. Founder Manuel Rebecchi—the nephew of Moira Orfei, the world-renowned queen of the Italian circus—combined his family's pedigree with his own groundbreaking ideas to form a company that leaves crowds breathless and competitors hurrying to catch up.

Inspired by the element of water, the acts express its versatility and fluidity through human movement while curtains of rain and fountain jets crisscross in time to each move. Laser lights and bubbles also add to the interdimensional effect. In a nod to the inner child, mermaids rise from the depths, and even dinosaurs make an appearance.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Mode

Thou didst abolish death by Thy Cross; Thou didst open Paradise to the thief; Thou didst transform the myrrh-bearers' lamentation, and didst bid Thine Apostles to preach that Thou art risen, O Christ God, granting great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Mary Magdalene in the First Mode

When Christ God had been born for our sakes from the Virgin, thou faithfully didst follow him, keeping His statutes and heeding His sacred laws, O august Mary Magdalene. Hence, as we today observe thy holy remembrance, we receive the loosing of our sins and transgressions through thy holy prayers for us.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Mary Magdalene, the Holy Myrrh-bearer and Equal to the Apostles

Saint Mary was from Magdala in Galilee on the Sea of Tiberias, and for this was named Magdalene. When the Lord Jesus cast out seven demons from her, from which she had been suffering, she became His faithful and inseparable disciple, following Him and ministering unto Him even to the time of His crucifixion and burial. Then, returning to Jerusalem together with the rest of the Myrrh-bearers, she prepared the fragrant spices for anointing the body of the Lord. And on the Lord's day they came very early to the tomb, even before the Angels appeared declaring the Resurrection of the Lord. When Mary Magdalene saw the stone taken away from the tomb, she ran and proclaimed it to Peter and John. And returning immediately to the tomb and weeping outside, she was deemed worthy to be the first of the Myrrh-bearers to behold the Lord arisen from the dead, and when she fell at His feet, she heard Him say, "Touch Me not." After the Lord's Ascension, nothing certain is known concerning her. Some accounts say that she went to Rome and later returned to Jerusalem, and from there proceeded to Ephesus, where she ended her life, preaching Christ. Although it is sometimes said that Saint Mary Magdalene was the "sinful woman" of the Gospel, this is nowhere stated in the tradition of the Church, in the sacred hymnology, or in the Holy Gospels themselves, which say only that our Lord cast seven demons out of her, not that she was a fallen woman. "Madeleine" is a form of Magdalene.

Markella
July 22

Markella, the Virgin-martyr of Chios

Saint Markella was born in the 14th century on the island of Chios and was the daughter of the mayor of her town. She was raised in the Christian faith by pious parents, but lost her mother at a young age. This was especially difficult for her father who fell into depression. The young Markella was devoted to Christ and strove to preserve her virginity, fighting off numerous temptations from the Devil. Seeing he could make no progress with Markella, the Evil One turned his attention to her father, and enflamed within him an unnatural lust for his daughter.

One day he declared his desire for her at which she ran away in tears and fear. Arriving at the edge of the water and with nowhere to run, a rock opened up for Markella to enter so that her lower half could be enclosed within the rock. When her father arrived in pursuit of her, he was furious to have been deprived of his desire and beheaded his daughter there. The miraculous rock remains on Chios in the church dedicated to Saint Markella the Virgin-Martyr and is said to spring healing waters.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Eighth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:11-18

At that time, Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him." Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, "Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." Mary Magdalene went and said to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them that He had said these things to her.

Eighth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.

Brethren, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Grave Mode.

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 14:14-22

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

Wisdom of the Fathers

And another thing too we learn, the self-restraint of the disciples which they practised in necessary things, and how little they accounted of food.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 49 on Matthew 14, 4th Century

For being twelve, they had five loaves only and two fishes; so secondary to them were the things of the body: so did they cling to the things spiritual only. And not even that little did they hold fast, but gave up even it when asked.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 49 on Matthew 14, 4th Century
