THE CROSS RAISED FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE!
As most of you know on Thanksgiving morning at 6:45 my mother Mrs. Elpida Hope Liakos-Bassakyros fell asleep in the Lord at the young age of 101.9, thirty-three years after her husband and our father fell asleep in the Lord on December 20, 1986. She passed-on without any pain or suffering but with hope in the Resurrection, which she truly believed in her heart is our destiny beyond this Fallen World. I thank God that I was there with her before, during, and after her passing.
One of the many gifts she nurtured and developed as she matured was her love of life along with seeing the good in every person. She learned how to live a Christian way of life from her mother as a child, and it enveloped her entire being. We will all miss her very much.
Furthermore, her love for the Church and most of all the Theotokos gave her great strength, comfort, and the ability to persevere through every hardship and struggle she faced. When sitting together in the Church I noticed on many occasions that tears would flow from her eyes when the Theotokos is being commemorated. The love she had for the Theotokos was something magical and very palatable to those who met her. This is what gave her hope throughout her life and eased the pain and suffering that all of us go through in this Fallen World.
She felt the pain of a mother watching her son being crucified on a cross for no reason by ignorant and jealous people. This she deplored most of all. Those who think they are better or even worthy of what they have accomplished without recognizing the grace of God in their life which gave them the possibility to achieve in the first place. His grace in her life is something that she understood and was the most precious pearl of all fulfilled by way of our Lord’s cross. Self-sacrifice and living for others was her continual mantra.
Moreover, there is a beautiful story written by Saint Andrew of Crete that demonstrates this very understanding and Orthodox belief. It is entitled "The Cross Raised for All the World to See" This is exactly what gave her endurance and vigor to continue her life when our father passed and live an authentic Christian life loving all as He loves us. Enjoy!
"The cross is raised and appears above the earth, which until recently malice had kept hidden. It is raised, not to receive glory (for with Christ nailed to it what greater glory could it have?) but to give glory to God who is worshiped on it and proclaimed by it.
It is not surprising that the church rejects in the cross of Christ and robed himself in festal clothes, revealing her bridal beauty as she honors this day. Nor is it surprising that this great throng of people has gathered together today to see the cross exposed aloft and to worship Christ who they see raised upon it. For the cross is exposed in order to be raised and is raised to be exposed.
What cross? The cross, which a little while ago was hidden in a place called 'The Skull' but now is everywhere adored. This is what we rejoice over today, this is what we celebrate, this is the point of the present feast, this is the manifestation of the mystery.
For this hidden and life-giving cross had to be exposed, set on high like a city on a hill or a lamp on a stand, for all the world to see."
God Bless You and Know That Mom Is Praying For All Of Us In The Bosom of Abraham, AMEN!

Sixth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:36-53
At that time, Jesus, having risen from the dead, stood in the midst of his disciples and said to them, "Peace to you." But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See my hands and feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them.
Then he said to them, "These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high."
Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and they returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 63.11,1.
The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord.
Verse: Oh God, hear my cry.
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 4:22-27.
Brethren, Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise. Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written, "Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout, you who are not in travail; for the children of the desolate one are many more than the children of her that is married."
Grave Mode.
10th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 13:10-17
At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day." Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

According to the ancient tradition of the Church, since Saint Anna, the Ancestor of God, was barren, she and her husband Joachim remained without children until old age. Therefore, sorrowing over their childlessness, they besought God with a promise that, if He were to grant them the fruit of the womb, they would offer their offspring to Him as a gift. And God, hearkening to their supplication, informed them through an Angel concerning the birth of the Virgin. And thus, through God's promise, Anna conceived according to the laws of nature, and was deemed worthy to become the mother of the Mother of our Lord (see also Sept. 8).

The memory of the just is praised, but thou art well pleased, O Forerunner, with the testimony of the Lord. For thou hast verily been shown forth as more honoured than the prophets, since thou wast counted worthy to baptize in the stream Him whom they foretold. Therefore, having mightily contended and suffered for the truth, with joy thou hast preached also to those in Hades, of God’s manifestation in the flesh, who takes away the sin of the world and grants unto us great mercy.
