KNOCK AND RECEIVE
Recently I received a very interesting video from one of my Facebook friends. It depicts a professor/teacher in a classroom full of young students. In his hands is a very elegant and plush round hat box with a lid on it. His question to the class is that "In this box, I have a picture of the world’s greatest leaders from the last 100 years." He offers the students whoever can recognize and name the leader in this box will not have to do the next homework assignment. This is now a very intriguing question and the students are asked to name whoever they believe is in the box.
All the students raise their hands and the professor calls upon Joe first.
"Joe who do you got? Steve Jobs!
Great good.
Cassie? Mother Theresa!
Nice okay.
Nathaniel? Definitely has to be Martin Luther King Jr.!
Okay, good guesses.
Let me ask, what qualities make for a good leader?
Katie? Someone kind, respectful, that listens to what people have to say! Well done.
Nathaniel? Confident, intelligent, and has swag!
Okay, I like that one.
Alright, I am going to hand the box over to you, I want you to take a look inside and see who this great leader is? Okay, So I'm going to hand it over to you and pass it around so everyone can get a good look at it.
So what do you see in there Joe?
I see a mirror, I see myself!
Okay, so what can we take from this what can we learn from this?
Katie? That we are all leaders, that we can become the leaders of tomorrow if we tap into our full potential.
That's exactly right!
There is only one person that can prevent you from being the best you can be, and that person is you. You're the only one who can revolutionize your life. You're the only one who can influence your happiness and your success. Your life doesn't change when your boss changes. When your career changes. Your life changes when you change. When you get beyond your limiting beliefs. When you realize you're the only one who is responsible for your life. Allow yourself to be the best you can be. The world needs great leaders now more than ever. I believe in you! It's time you believe in yourselves."
What a great message for all of us. We need to be told again and again that if we have the will to do something we can do it. However, today students are being taught that others should take care of them, and without their help, they cannot break out of whatever holds them down. Self-dependence is not a sin, it is our responsibility to take care of what we can, and leave the rest up to God. As Jesus says in Matthew 7:7-8 "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you: For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened."
Finally, it is our responsibility to take action and walk with God in everything we do. This is very evident even in the Church especially when we receive Holy Communion. The priest calls out with a loud voice, "With faith, love, and a fear of God draw near! He then leaves the altar and meets the congregates receiving Holy Communion in the Solea. This action is truly representational of our relationship with God. We have to make an effort to reach out to Him and He, in turn, will reach out to us. We have to make the effort in order to reap His benefits. A symbiosis that God will never renege upon. AMEN!

Eleventh Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 21:14-25
At that time, Jesus revealed himself to his disciples after he was raised from the dead, and he said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go." (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, "Follow me."
Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?" When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?" Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!" So, the word went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die; but Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?" This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
Eleventh Orthros Gospel
Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13.
BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
First Mode.
Sunday after Epiphany
The Reading is from Matthew 4:12-17
At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Saints Hermylus and Stratonicus contested for piety's sake during the reign of Licinius, in the year 314. Saint Hermylus was a deacon, and Stratonicus was his friend. For his confession of Christ, Hermylus was beaten so fiercely that his whole body was covered with wounds. Stratonicus, seeing him endure this and other torments that left him half dead, wept with grief for his friend. From this he was discovered to be a Christian, and when he had openly professed his Faith and had been beaten, he and Hermylus were cast into the Danube River, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

The memory of the just is praised, but thou art well pleased, O Forerunner, with the testimony of the Lord. For thou hast verily been shown forth as more honoured than the prophets, since thou wast counted worthy to baptize in the stream Him whom they foretold. Therefore, having mightily contended and suffered for the truth, with joy thou hast preached also to those in Hades, of God’s manifestation in the flesh, who takes away the sin of the world and grants unto us great mercy.
