The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is pleased to announce that the audit of the financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2018 has been completed. (See financial statements here). The completion of these financial statements confirms that progress in financial accountability is improving as this is the earliest after a year end in over 15 years that audited financial statements have been made available.

THE THEFT OF AMERICA'S SOUL!

A few weeks ago I decided to take a walk to Union Square after lunch and check out some of the local stores and restaurants.  Every so often new stores and restaurants open or would change hands or close down.  One of the more permanent and landmark stores around the square is Barnes and Noble. Since almost everyone who knows me knows I like to read and I frequently receive gift cards from Barnes and Noble.

So I decided to take a look and see what new books were being offered.  While perusing the aisles I spotted a book written by the Duck Dynasty guy Phil Robertson.  I grabbed it and went to the checkout counter with it and my gift card. What attracted me to the book in the first place was the title, "The Theft of America's Soul: Blowing The lid Off The Lies That Are Destroying Our Country."  This piqued my interest and so far it has not disappointed me.

Moreover, it explains in very real and vivid details of how Phil went from a complete and total loser who almost lost his wife and family because of his destructive lifestyle to a sober and Christ-loving, God-fearing millionaire.  His conversion story is very powerful and laced with the Blood of the Crucified and Risen Lord.  What should have killed him made him see the rejuvenating and transforming light of Christ while seeing the manipulation that Satan uses to enslave us.  Christ's Redeeming power and guiding light changed this man into a loyal and loving husband, father, and grandfather.  During his conversion and metamorphosis, he realized the corrosive and destructive energy that was emanating from him and that lifestyle.

Furthermore, he saw that Satan's objective was to destroy as many people as he can through sin, and pull them away from the truth that the Church and our Lord have to offer all who repent. No matter what denomination or sect of Christianity Phil practices under he can still see "The Way, Light, and Life" that Christ Crucified has bestowed on all of us.  Here are a few of his thoughts about how the Devil tricks humanity into believing that you can only be truly free if you reject God and His so-called absolute Truth.

"If God is dead, what does he have to say? Nothing. If his word isn’t true, what is the Bible but a good story and an ancient moral code? Probably nothing. If the Bible is nothing more than a good story, is there really an evil one himself? It's doubtful.  If the Bible is only an ancient moral code, how can it apply today? It probably doesn't. If it doesn't apply, can there be a hell? It's uncertain at best.  If there's no hell, why did Christ die? Who knows, really?  He was probably just a lunatic." "This is the way it all breaks down, see. If the very existence of God is in question, then so are the absolute truths spoken by that God in the Bible.  At best those truths are relative, they argue, and if all truth is relative, then aren't we free to chase our desires? What's keeping us from acting on every sexual impulse? Why not say what we want, and drink what we want, take every advantage we can get? Why not abort babies, steal, murder? If there's no absolute standard for truth, who can say these things are wrong?  As I see it, there's only one problem with this line of thinking, and it's a big one. It's all based on the lie that God is dead. A lie created by the deceiver himself, Satan."

Finally, the quote above reflects Mr. Phil's attitude before is conversion and it shows how he rationalized his sinful actions as he descended the road of destruction in a drunken stupor.  I thank God that he finally saw the light and changed his ways through God's grace.  God heals all if we let Him, but it requires we never look back with a longing to return to those sinful ways as Lot's wife did and she was turned into a pillar of salt.  It was after his conversion that he started to investigate making Duck Calls and selling them. Have the courage to withstand Satan's attacks once you leave sin behind and come to your senses and the Church to be recharged with the Power and Grace of the Holy Spirit and our Lord Himself. AMEN.

Seven Holy Youths of Ephesus

The Seven Youths hid themselves in a certain cave near Ephesus in the year 250, to escape the persecution of Decius. By divine grace, a sleep came upon them and they slept for 184 years, until the reign of Saint Theodosius the Younger, when the doctrine of the resurrection was being assailed by heretics. They then awoke, that is, were resurrected, confirming in the sight of all the bodily resurrection; and again after a short time, by divine command, they reposed in the Lord in the year 434.

Eusignius the Martyr of Antioch

This Martyr was from Antioch, and had been a soldier from the time of the reign of Constantius Chlorus (the father of Saint Constantine the Great) to that of Julian the Apostate. He censured Julian's ungodliness and reminded him that he was the nephew of Saint Constantine the Great, the first Christian Emperor. He reminded him further, that from his tender youth he had been nourished on the milk of piety and instructed in the Faith of Christ, had been a fellow student of Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian, had been a reader of the Church of Nicomedia, and that he had set all these things at nought and become a transgressor of the promises made in his divine Baptism, and had offered to the idols the adoration that is due to God alone. Reminding the Apostate of all these things and reproving him, he was beheaded in the year 361, having lived altogether 110 years, and been a soldier for more than sixty.

As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons."

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.
