Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. 4th Tone. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Wisdom of the Fathers

A Christian's . . . duty is to "take up his cross." The word cross means sufferings, sorrows and adversities. To take up one's cross means to bear without grumblings everything unpleasant, painful, sad, difficult and oppressive that ay happen to us in life. . .without expecting any earthly reward in return, but bear it all with love, with joy and with courageous strength.

RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION AT STS CONSTANTINE AND HELEN CATHEDRAL IS DONE IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER:

1) Orthodox Education students & teachers.
2) Elderly & people with disabilities.
3) Parents with infants being carried in arms.
4) The rest of the congregation and visitors wishing to receive will be dismissed row by row from front to back.

Only practicing Orthodox Christians may receive sacraments.


GOYA KICKOFF PARTY

Our annual GOYA kickoff party will take place on Sunday, September 15th from 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The Comber Family will host us again, and we'll have plenty of food, friends, and fun! We will also discuss our plans and ideas for the upcoming year of youth ministry. Kindly RSVP to Ted.


ORTHODOX EDUCATION

 OE Class - will begin today, this Sunday, September 15th for Preschool through 12th grades. There is also registration.  All those who have registered the last two years will be automatically renewed, unless the youngest has graduated. New members, those not registered before, incoming preschool children and those whose information has changed please do complete a registration form, so you are not forgotten.
Little Saints Reading Club - Families whose children are ages 0-3 can just leave name and e-mail address at the registration table to receive information and reminders about story time in the play room.  This story time is called Little Saints Reading Club which begins this Sunday, September 15th, as well.  For further questions please contact Maria Sikoutris at orthodox_education@stsconstantine.com
Open House - begins on September 22nd with 3rd/4th and 11th/12th grades.  September 29th grades 1st/2nd and 9th/10th will have Open House.  Signs will be posted on the doors where classes will be.  Parents are very welcome to come and sit with their child during class.

 


ST. KYRANNA COOKING CLASS

St. Kyranna Cooking Class for young adults ages 21 - 35(ish) will have its next meeting on Friday, September 20th @ 7:00 p.m. Our guest instructor will be Jasmim Frangos, and we'll be making melitzanes imam biyald. Fellowship with wine & board games will follow after class. RSVP to Ted at tcherpas@stsconstantine.com.


NEW ALTAR BOYS

Boys wishing to help in the Holy Altar must be at least 10 years old, willing to commit to regular attendance and willing to attend a training workshop on a Saturday, September 21st from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Please give your name and contact info to either Fr. Stephen or to Ted Cherpas.


GREEK SCHOOL

First day for 1st-6th grades is Saturday, September 21st 10am-1pm. Students may be registered today, this Sunday, September 15th. Schedules will be available at the OE registration table. The Preschool/Kindergarten class will begin Saturday, October 5th 9:00-9:45 am.

Salvation Army Zelma George Family Shelter – volunteer to help with the Back to School Party on Saturday, September 28th from 1-3:00 p.m.
St. Herman's Lunch/Dinner - volunteer to help serve lunch or dinner at St. Herman's House of Hospitality located in Ohio City.
Bible Study - come and discuss the Book of John Chapters 1-5 at the next Men and Women's Bible Study on Wednesday, September 25th from 7 to 8 p.m. We meet at the church.

GOYA

GOYA will be visiting St. Mary of Egypt Orthodox Food Bank on Saturday, October 19th from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. This will be our fall service project. Send RSVPs and any questions to Ted Cherpas.

The congregation is asked to sing together the responses to the litanies after the Great Entrance (pp. 33-37) and after the Holy Anaphora (pp. 51-53).


VISITORS & SACRAMENTS

Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church & may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the end of the service, but only practicing Orthodox Christians may receive the sacrament of Holy Communion.
