Apolytikion for the Church in the Second Mode

The memory of the just is mentioned with praise; but as for you the Lord’s witness is enough, O Forerunner. Indeed, you were greater that the prophets since you were found worthy to baptize in the waters the one they could but announce. You have fought for the sake of truth and proclaimed to those in Hades, that God who did appear in the flesh has taken away the sins of the world and bestowed upon us, His great mercy.

On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4.

Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand.

Forgiveness Sunday

The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

"And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

Forgiveness Sunday

The Holy Fathers have appointed the commemoration of Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight here, on the eve of the holy Forty-day Fast, demonstrating to us not by simple words, but by actual deeds, how beneficial fasting is for man, and how harmful and destructive are insatiety and the transgressing of the divine commandments. For the first commandment that God gave to man was that of fasting, which the first-fashioned received but did not keep; and not only did they not become gods, as they had imagined, but they lost even that blessed life which they had, and they fell into corruption and death, and transmitted these and innumerable other evils to all of mankind. The God-bearing Fathers set these things before us today, that by bringing to mind what we have fallen from, and what we have suffered because of the insatiety and disobedience of the first-fashioned, we might be diligent to return again to that ancient bliss and glory by means of fasting and obedience to all the divine commands. Taking occasion from today's Gospel (Matt. 6:14-21) to begin the Fast unencumbered by enmity, we also ask forgiveness this day, first from God, then from one another and all creation.

Benedict the Righteous of Nursia

This Saint, whose name means "blessed," was born in 480 in Nursia, a small town about seventy miles northeast of Rome. He struggled in asceticism from his youth in deserted regions, where his example drew many who desired to emulate him. Hence, he ascended Mount Cassino in Campania and built a monastery there. The Rule that he gave his monks, which was inspired by the writings of Saint John Cassian, Saint Basil the Great, and other Fathers, became a pattern for monasticism in the West; because of this, he is often called the first teacher of monks in the West. He reposed in 547.

TRIODION

Today, the Sunday before Great Lent begins, is Forgiveness Sunday.  We are entreated to make amends with everyone with whom we may have a difference and ask for forgiveness.  Our Lord taught that if we have a gift for the altar, but have a difference with our brother, leave the gift and first reconcile, then bring our gift to the altar.  In this spirit of Forgiveness Sunday, let us all make every attempt to seek forgiveness of all. This Lenten cycle, let us utilize all the tools our Lord gave us to grow as stronger Christians, and to help each other. 

 


GREAT LENT

We begin our Lenten cycle with Clean Monday (Tomorrow).  This starts our fast for Pascha.  Monday is the Great Compline at 5pm. Wednesday this week the PreSantified will be celebrated at 6 pm.  Those wishing tp receive Holy Communion are asked to abstain from food and drink after 1 pm. On Friday at 7:00 pm, we will chant the first Xairetismoi service.  The last Saturday of Souls is this Saturday at 9:30am.  


SATURDAY OF SOULS

This coming Saturday, the Liturgy for Soul Saturday will be chanted at 9:30 am. There are forms on the Narthex desk for you to list you departed loved ones to be commemorated at the Liturgy.


SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY

The Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy is celebrated on the first Sunday of Great Lent (next Sunday). It is the celebration of the victory of the iconodules over the iconoclasts by the decision of the Seventh Ecumenical Council. Therefore, the service is to commemorate the restoration of icons for use in services and private devotional life of Christians.  At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy next Sunday, everyone is encouraged to bring an icon from home to participate in the procession around our Church as we proclaim the victory of our Orthodox Faith.


SEAFOOD FEST

St. John the Forerunner is  once again having our Famous Seafood Fest on Fridays from February 19th through April 2nd.  Please plan to attend.  Because of our pandemic, this will mbe a carry out event only.  Also, your help is greatly needed.  Please contact Anthony Orologas or Andrew Rosko, our co-chairs for our Seafood Fest. NEW CHURCH SECRETARY/OFFICE MANAGE AND OFFICE HOURS

We now have a new secretary and office manager. We want to welcome Joanne Martin who will be manning our Church Office. Our new office hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 am - 2 pm. Joanne has been a long time friend to Saint John the Forerunner and has bookkeeping experience. She will be an asset to our Church family. Welcome Joanne!


SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ORATORICAL FESTIVAL

All teens are invited to participate in the Oratorical Festival at Saint John the Forerunner. The Archdiocesan Department of Religious Education has announced the topics for the 2021 Oratorical Festival. ARE YOUR CHILDREN PARTICIPATING IN CHURCH SCHOOL?

Children are fed spiritually from our Church School lessons. In obedience to His Eminence Metropolitan Savas, we can only hold virtual classes. So, St. John is offering virtual Church School !  ✔️Please make sure your children attend. Join the ZOOM class every Sunday. Church School begins promptly at noon and ends at 12:30 PM. The theme of this year’s program is “Iconography and Hymnology –The Not – So Hidden Treasures of Our Church.”

CALLING ALL GRADUATES

So that we can recognize all of our graduates, either high school or higher education, please notify the office of any graduates.  We will recognize them in May.  Scholarship applications for all high school seniors who plan to attend a school of higher education are available in the church office.  Deadline for the applications is May 10, 2021.  Thank you.

YOUNGSTOWN COMMUNITY FOOD CENTER AND GLEANERS FOOD BANK

The Youngstown Community Food Center & Gleaners Food Bank are in need of volunteers to help prepare boxes of food for those in need, especially during these difficult times.  Volunteers are welcome Monday - Saturday 8 am - 11 am.  Visit their website: www.youngstowncommunityfoodcenter.org.

In the past few months when some have been limited in their ability to physically attend Church on Sundays, we want to thank especially those who have continued to offer their offerings, pledges and donations to our St John Church.  There are a couple of ways to continue contributing to the Church.  The first way is by bringing or mailing your contribution to the Church.  The other way is by donating through our website - stjohnboardman.com.  On the upper right hand corner of the home page there is a yellow "donate" tab.  You can donate through PayPal using this method.  

Lastly, we encourage everyone to reach out to our members of our Church family to let them know that they are being thought of and prayed for, and, most of all LOVED!  For those who who are still not ready to return to in-person services, they may continue to worship together in spirit by streaming on line at our facebook pgae: St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church @StJohnBoardman.  Thank you and may God bless you and our Saint John family!!

 


PLEASE WEAR YOUR MASKS

The coronavirus is real.  We must do what we can to protect ourselves from this global pandemic.  Since there is a state mandadate, and directives from our Metropolitan, we are required to wear masks during the church services.  This has been of some concern among our parishioners.  Our own Metropolitan Savas at our clergy zoom meeting emphatically emphasized that church attendees must wear masks.  Please adhear to these regulations.  Thank you.

The Buckeye Scholarship Foundation gladly announce that they are offering scholarships for high school and college students.  Applications are available online.  You may access the application via the following link: www.bsf.buckeyedistrict11.org. Applications and related material must be submitted no later than March 31.

PARISH COUNCIL MINISTRY AND OUTREACH

Our Saint John parish is concerned about all of our parishioners especially during this limiting pandemic. We understand that many may have needs that they may not be able to fulfil by themselves. Our Parish Council is developing a committee to try to help. If anyone has needs - i.e. grocery shopping or errands to be run, please feel to contact council representative, Debbie Kreatsoulas (home phone # 330-707-9028 or on her cell phone # 330-219-3236) and we will do our best to fulfill his or her needs. Likewise, if anyone is willing to serve on this committee, please contact Debbie. Thank you.


CORONAVIRUS - UPDATED INFORMATION

The pandemic that we are currently experincing has affected us all.  As we have progressed through the varios stages of re-opening, we have moved from limits of only five people (red phase) to twenty five (yellow phase).  In each of these two stages, no one over 65 was allowed to attend. Fortunately, as our states restrictions are being eased, His Eminence Metropolitan Savas, is also opening up the parishes in our Metropolis.  Each parish has been given guidelines for the safety of our parishioners.  At Saint John the Forerunner, we are complying to the directives of our Metropolis.  Thanks to everyone's cooperation,  we are in the Green Phase.  This means we are allowed to have up to 50% of the Church capacity. (At Saint John the Forerunner, that is at least 200 people.)  Age restrictions and prior reservations have been lifted.  That means anyone who is healthy and is willing to follow the directives, guidelines and instructions are welcome to attend.  Masks are required to be worn during the services.  You are not required to register and make a reservation to attend; however, for safety reasons, we are required to have a record of everyone's name and phone number of those who attend.  These lists will be kept for 30 days. There are markings on the pews as to seating arrangements so that we may all keep our social distancing.  The ushers will help instruct us as we enter the church.  There are markings also on the floor to help with social distancing as we wait to approach the Holy Chalice.  Please continue to follow these directives so that we all may remain safe and healthy. LITURGY BOOKS BACK IN THE PEWS

This past Thursday, His Eminence has announced that we are now allowed to place our Liturgy books back in the pews for us to use to enhance our worship.  There are new guidelines for our parishes during this pandemic.  The fliers are attached in this bulletin. 


HOSPITALIZATION

Please notify Father or the Church office of any hospitalization, nursing home admissions, or illnesses so that Father can visit and offer the Holy Sacraments to your loved ones if he is allowed.  We do not want to ever deprive anyone support and consolation during an illness. If you desire this information kept confidential, please advise us and strict confidence will be maintained. Please keep in mind that according to Federal Law, hospitals are not allowed to give our personal information such as religious affiliating.  Hospitals will notify the priest or church only if the patient requests the facility to do so.
