Apolytikion for the Church in the Second Mode

The memory of the just is mentioned with praise; but as for you the Lord’s witness is enough, O Forerunner. Indeed, you were greater that the prophets since you were found worthy to baptize in the waters the one they could but announce. You have fought for the sake of truth and proclaimed to those in Hades, that God who did appear in the flesh has taken away the sins of the world and bestowed upon us, His great mercy.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. Before He humbled Himself, only the angels knew him. After He humbled Himself, all human nature knew Him. God wants for nothing and has need of nothing. Yet, when He humbled Himself, He produced such great good, increased His household, and extended His kingdom. Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on April 1, where her life is recorded. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed.

Holy Father John the Righteous, disciple of St. Gregory of Decapolis

This Saint took up the monastic life from his youth and became a disciple of Saint Gregory of Decapolis (see Nov. 20). After his elder, Saint Gregory, reposed (in the first half of the ninth century), he came to Jerusalem and finally reposed in peace in the Monastery of Saint Chariton.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT

On the Fifth Sunday of Lent the Orthodox Church commemorates our Righteous Mother Mary of Egypt. The feast day of Saint Mary of Egypt is April 1, however, she is also commemorated on this Sunday due to her recognition by the Church as a model of repentance.

On this Sunday, we recall the memory of Saint Mary of Egypt, the repentant harlot. Mary tells us, first of all, that no amount of sin and wickedness can keep a person from God if he truly repents. Christ himself has come “to call sinners to repentance” and to save them from their sins (Lk 5.32). In addition, Saint Mary tells us that it is never too late in life—or in Lent—to repent. Christ will gladly receive all who come to him even at the eleventh hour of their lives. But their coming must be in serious and sincere repentance.


PALM SUNDAY LUNCHEON

Next Sunday, Palm Sunday, we are hosting a Drive-Thru Seafood Fest. 

Pick up times are Sunday between 12-3 pm. 

The menu consists of: Baked, Fried, or Plaki Fish and Spanakopita Dinners ($12 each), Crab Roll up Dinner ($14), or Spanakopita alone ($5). 

You may Pre-order on Saturday from 12-4 pm on our website www.sttjohngreekfest.com, or, place your order in person on Sunday.  Quantities are limited, so first come, first served. 


EGG DYE AVAILABLE FOR SALE

We have some excellent quality egg dye from Greece.   The egg dye is available in the narthex  for $2.50/pack. 


MYRRHBEARERS NEEDED

We are looking for young ladies to participate in the Holy Friday Lamentations service.  They will wear white dresses and will spread flowers over the tomb of Christ.  Please call Arlene Denney at 330-799-9907 or 330-402-5009, or the church office at 330-788-5257 if interested.


CALLING ALL GRADUATES

So that we can recognize all of our graduates, either high school or higher education, please notify the office of any graduates.  We will recognize them in May.  Scholarship applications for all high school seniors who plan to attend a school of higher education are available in the church office.  Deadline for the applications is May 10, 2021.  Thank you.


READERS OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES NEEDED

On Pascha Sunday we will celebrate the Agape Vespers at 11 a.m. when the Gospel is read in many languages.  If you can participate by reading a foreign language, kindly call Father Tom at 330-788-5257.  Thank you.


NAMES OF DEPARTED LOVED ONES

On Holy Friday, during the Lamentation Service, Father Tom will pray for our departed loved ones.  Sheets for you to list your departed are in the narthex.  Please fill out a list and return them soon.  Thank you.


PASCHA FLOWER SIGN-UP SHEET

We are now taking donations for our flowers during Lent, Holy Week and Pascha! There is a sign-up sheet on the Narthex desk for your donations. Thank you for your support to our Saint John the Forerunner Church.

CANDY NEEDED FOR PACHA HUNT

On Pascha Sunday, May 2, following Agape Vespers at 11:00 a.m. there will be a candy hunt for all our children.  We are in need of candy and plastic eggs to stuff the eggs to be hidden.  Please purchase and donate candy for the hunt.  You may drop off the candy in the pre-school classroom.  Thank you.


SHUT-INS

Father Tom plans to visit all the Shut-Ins before Pascha this year.  If you or you know of a loved one who may not be able to attend Church, please see Father Tom or call the Church office at 330-788-5257.  Thank you.


DECORATORS FOR THE EPITAPHIOS AND PASCHA ARE NEEDED

On Holy Friday, we will be decorating our Epitaphios with flowers following the Royal Hours Service (approximately 10:30-11 am).  If anyone is available, your help is welcome.  Also, following the Liturgy on Saturday, help is needed to reset the church for Pascha night.  Thank you!


UPDATE TO OUR METROPOLIS PANDEMIC POLICY

From our Metropolis Chancellor, Father George Callos:

Good afternoon reverend Fathers, esteemed Parish Council members, and dedicated Parish Secretaries,  

His Eminence is issuing the following amendments to his previously issued policies regarding church function during this time of the pandemic:

- Parishes in areas operating under Metropolis “Green Phase” policies can open seating within the churches to 75% provided that 6 foot spacing and masking is maintained.

- Choirs are permitted to participate in the Liturgy, provided that 6 foot distancing is maintained between the individual members and the masks remain on. 

- A single Cantor with no one around may sing unmasked, but if there are more than one Cantor within the same area then they must maintain 6 foot distancing and keep their masks on.

- Non-worship activities, including meals, athletic events, and the like, must abide by county and state guidelines for similar functions (restaurants and catering guidelines for foodservice; athletic guidelines for sports; etc.)

- Those activities that can be properly performed via videoconferencing are strongly encouraged to continue doing so. 


ARE YOUR CHILDREN PARTICIPATING IN CHURCH SCHOOL?

Children are fed spiritually from our Church School lessons. In obedience to His Eminence Metropolitan Savas, we can only hold virtual classes. So, St. John is offering virtual Church School !  ✔️Please make sure your children attend. Join the ZOOM class every Sunday. Church School begins promptly at noon and ends at 12:30 PM. The theme of this year’s program is “Iconography and Hymnology –The Not – So Hidden Treasures of Our Church.”

PLEASE WEAR YOUR MASKS

The coronavirus is real.  We must do what we can to protect ourselves from this global pandemic.  Since there is a state mandadate, and directives from our Metropolitan, we are required to wear masks during the church services.  This has been of some concern among our parishioners.  Our own Metropolitan Savas at our clergy zoom meeting emphatically emphasized that church attendees must wear masks.  Please adhear to these regulations.  Thank you.

TO THE FAITHFUL STEWARDS OF SAINT JOHN THE FORERUNNER

In the past few months when some have been limited in their ability to physically attend Church on Sundays, we want to thank especially those who have continued to offer their offerings, pledges and donations to our St John Church.  There are a couple of ways to continue contributing to the Church.  The first way is by bringing or mailing your contribution to the Church.  The other way is by donating through our website - stjohnboardman.com.  On the upper right hand corner of the home page there is a yellow "donate" tab.  You can donate through PayPal using this method.  

Lastly, we encourage everyone to reach out to our members of our Church family to let them know that they are being thought of and prayed for, and, most of all LOVED!  For those who who are still not ready to return to in-person services, they may continue to worship together in spirit by streaming on line at our facebook pgae: St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church @StJohnBoardman.  Thank you and may God bless you and our Saint John family!!

 


LITURGY BOOKS BACK IN THE PEWS

This past Thursday, His Eminence has announced that we are now allowed to place our Liturgy books back in the pews for us to use to enhance our worship.  There are new guidelines for our parishes during this pandemic.  The fliers are attached in this bulletin. 


2021 CHURCH CALENDARS

We have received our 2021 Church calendars and are awaiting to find homes.  You may pick yours up from the Narthex desk.  May God bless us all as we near the end of what has turned out to be a very unusual 2020 year.


HOSPITALIZATION

Please notify Father or the Church office of any hospitalization, nursing home admissions, or illnesses so that Father can visit and offer the Holy Sacraments to your loved ones if he is allowed.  We do not want to ever deprive anyone support and consolation during an illness. If you desire this information kept confidential, please advise us and strict confidence will be maintained. Please keep in mind that according to Federal Law, hospitals are not allowed to give our personal information such as religious affiliating.  Hospitals will notify the priest or church only if the patient requests the facility to do so.


CHURCH SECRETARY/OFFICE MANAGER AND OFFICE HOURS

Our secretary and office manager is Joanne Martin. Our new office hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 am - 2 pm. Joanne has been a long time friend to Saint John the Forerunner and has bookkeeping experience. She is an asset to our Church family. Welcome Joanne!
