From the Desk of Fr Nick Pappas

23-01-15 From the Desk of Fr Nick Pappas

TODAY: SUNDAY - JAN 15:
Presvytera Monica & Fr. Nick offer Artoclasia** on behalf of their daughter, Tatiana,
in honor of St. Tatiana whose Feast Day is celebrated on Jan 12th. Tatiana
("Tanya") and Presvytera Monica will join us in prayer, today. Please introduce
yourselves and welcome them in the Hall.

**Artoklasia? -- Five round loaves of bread are offered by individuals as a sign of
devotion for personal or family anniversaries, (ie...name days & other occasions).
They remind us of the five loaves that Jesus Christ blessed & fed five thousand
hungry followers. It effects personal sanctification & helps against bodily infirmities
and illness "if taken with faith." Please partake by receiving a slice when cut &
distributed to us.

Q: who is this St. Tatiana?

A: wow!! what a biography!
Tatiana betrothed herself, as a virgin, to Christ in her late teens while raised in
Rome on, or about, 235A.D. She showed remarkable maturity at her age including
the rejection of earthly riches in the hopes of receiving the wealth of Heaven. She
was ordained a deaconess and served God by tending to the sick & suffering while
fasting and through prayer. That's right - a Deaconess! Imagine that! Her relics
(entire skull) are housed in the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Demetrios in
Craiova, Romania's 6th largest city, along with the relics of Saint Niphon of
Constantinople and the Holy Martyrs Sergius & Bacchus. Those interested in
greater, historical details are welcome to 'Google It."

Saint Tatiana is the patron saint of students. Her feast day is deemed a public
holiday (aka 'student's day' or 'Tatiana Day') in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. In
1885, Chekhov wrote about Tatiana Day, "This year everything was drunk, except the water
from the Moscow river, and only because it was frozen." It's a day of celebration for the
completion of final exams followed by speeches, awarding of prizes, public events
and PARTIES.

UPDATE: CHARITY
Please recall the special collection tray that was passed on December 4, 2022
during HTC celebration of St. Barbara's Feast Day. Who could forget this day? Dr.
Wendy presented a wonderful talk on the life of St. Barbara and how she is
honored throughout multiple cultures. Or, how Nada, along with special friends,
performed dances unique to the Lebanese culture. It was a full-day with 100+
people in Church with a convivial meal to bring the community together.
Recall how Fr. Nick requested that a special tray be passed to benefit a Lebanese
Charity to be identified. Well ---- here's the update.

A total of $202 was raised. An anonymous donation of $100 was also received
bringing the total amount to $302.00. These funds were transferred to: Heaven’s
Joy (Bonheur Du Ciel) Association, a spiritual apostolic, charitable and social, nonpolitical
and non-profit association, duly registered before the Ministry of Interior
and Municipalities. It is licensed according to memorandum and notification No.
396 dated March 27, 2008. Its founder, Father Majdi Al Alawi, believes that love is
the drug for each wounded, hungry, thirsty, oppressed, addicted, person. Those
interested in learning more about this organization should go to
www.bonheurduciel.com/en/. HTC has copies of all receipts documenting its
contribution.

UPDATE: TRAVEL
Fr. Nick has received permission from the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New
Jersey to travel overseas from Feb. 1st - March 1st. We are grateful that Fr. Sam
will serve the Divine Liturgy on Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26. No Vesper or week-day Divine
Liturgies will be held during this time.  Further updates vis a vis HTC preparation for the Lenten Season forthcoming.

UPDATE: HOUSE BLESSINGS
We are blessed for the plethora of Home Blessings. Sojourns included multiple
visits within the City of Roanoke & surrounding counties and parts of Lynchburg. It
was heartening to be so welcomed. Parishioners opened their hearts when they
opened their doors in anticipation of the Jordan's waters. We read the special
prayers, jointly & severally, while moving room to room in a burst of energy,
effussed with the Holy Spirit made manifest within the Trinity. And - we just
started.

Q: Why so many House Blessings, now? Here are 3 theories!!

1st:
Covid restrictions have slowly lifted and parishioners are not as wary of allowing
non-family members into their homes. This theory doesn't hold water, so to say.
Masks & Vaccines were widely available last year at this time and people freely
moved about.

2nd:
Fr. Nick Pappas is so dynamic that HTC Parishioners flung open their doors in
anticipation of a great event. Only fools would subscribe to such a theory.

3rd:
HTC implemented a new, out-reach program this year. This could be the reason
behind the deluge of home blessings. HTC past practice of reaching out to
parishioners was, at best, inefficient & poorly implemented. You remember the
'coupon system' where one had to cut a coupon out of a bulletin, fill it-in by hand
and mail it back to the Church. Please be assured that this method of collecting
information added nothing of value to a database that hadn't been updated in
years, if at all. Failure to acknowledge poor office practices of the past coupled with
the belief heard throughout HTC: "Ετσι τα κανουμε" - "that's how we do things in
the past" - only leads to poor results.

Instead, this year we created 'team captains' who reach out to parishioners who
haven't been contacted let alone visited in years. Team captains 'work the phones'
and text & email when needed. This form of outreach allows HTC to clean-up its
database in order to better cast its nets, as fishers of men. and capture the hearts
of the HTC Community. Please reach out to a team captain: Angela Flegas, Francis
S, Nada Melki, Maria Apostolou, or the Topsana Family. You may contact Fr. Nick
directly by cell phone, text, email, Zoom - all contact information listed in this
Church bulletin. The Goal: bless as many homes as possible before Fr. Nick P leaves
on February 1st. Won't you join us? Thank you.
----------------------------------
Update: Windows

Fr. Nick requested, shortly after Thanksgiving, that a window-washing company be
brought in to wash all the Church windows - both inside & outside - before the
Church & Hall were decorated before Christmas. They were, by all means, filthy
since they had not been cleaned in years. They remain dirty today because no
action has taken. Please contact Fr. Nick directly if you believe his request for clean
windows is unreasonable or contact the PC if you believe the windows should not
be washed. Your thoughts would be well-received.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians 3:4-11.

Brethren, when Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all.

Plagal Second Mode.
Verse:

Plagal Second Mode.

Gospel Reading

12th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 17:12-19

At that time, as Jesus entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said: "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus's feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And he said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."

12th Sunday of Luke

12th Sunday of Luke

Wisdom of the Fathers

Having met the Savior, therefore, the lepers earnestly besought Him to free them from their misery, and called Him Master, that is. Teacher. No one pitied them when suffering this malady, but He Who had appeared on earth for this very reason, and had become man that He might show pity to all, He was moved with compassion for them, and had mercy on them.
St. Cyril of Alexandria
Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke, Homilies 113-116. B#42, pp. 465-466, 4th Century

And why did He not rather say, I will, be you cleansed; as He did in the case of another leper, but commanded them rather to show themselves to the priests? It was because the law gave directions to this effect to those who were delivered from leprosy (Lev. 14-2); for it commanded them to show themselves to the priests, and to offer a sacrifice for their cleansing.
St. Cyril of Alexandria
Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke, Homilies 113-116. B#42, pp. 465-466, 4th Century

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Mode

Angelic powers were above Thy tomb, and they that guarded Thee became as dead. And Mary stood by the grave seeking Thine immaculate Body. Thou hast despoiled Hades and wast not tried thereby. Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst grant us life. O Thou Who didst arise from the dead, Lord, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for John the Hut-Dweller in the Fourth Mode

Since thou hadst with fervour longed after the Lord from thy youth, * thou leftest the world with its delights and nobly didst strive in valiant ascetic deeds. * Thou didst pitch thy hut before the gates of thy parents; * thou didst break the demons' snares, O all-blessed Father. * And therefore, as is meet, hath Christ God glorified thee, O John.

Seasonal Kontakion in the First Mode

Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.
