Message from ALEXIOS, Metropolitan of Atlanta

September 30, 2022

To the Reverend Clergy & the Faithful of the Metropolis of Atlanta:

My Beloved Ones,

“Deliver this community and city, O Lord, and every city and town,
from famine, plague, earthquake, hurricane tornado and flood.”
(From St. Basil’s Liturgy)

I greet you in a spirit of sober reflection, but also thanksgiving, as we continue to watch the path of Hurricane Ian.

It is with gratitude to Almighty God that I am pleased to report that our parish communities in Southwestern Florida (Ft. Myers, Port Charlotte & Naples) are in regular contact with the Metropolis to report only minor damage to their churches, and no loss of life among our brothers and sisters. Truly, it is impossible not to feel God's continual presence--from the time we began to prepare, until today. Even as the storm traveled across the state and out to sea, communities in the Tampa Bay area and Orlando continually express their thankfulness to God for sparing them the worst of the damage.

Of course, such a large storm means that our thoughts and prayers now extend to our parishes in Eastern Georgia & the Carolinas, as well as our Orthodox brothers and sisters living in the state of Virginia, in the Metropolis of New Jersey. They of course, remain in our prayers, and we will be in contact with many of our Metropolis parishes as we watch the storm closely.

Mindful as we are of those who are suffering from loss of life and livelihood, I encourage all our Atlanta Philoptochos chapters to collect charitable funds this Sunday, either through the use of a tray, or a collection plate to be located in the Narthex. These proceeds should be directed to Martha Driscoll, Treasurer of the Metropolis of Atlanta Philoptochos Board.

Even though the storm has not yet fully passed, and lives are still at risk, it is a blessing to know that opportunities for worship and fellowship demonstrate the continuance of life. Last night, St. Nicholas Cathedral in Tarpon Springs offered a doxology and Divine Liturgy to express their thankfulness to God, through the intercessions of their Patron Saint (who is the protector of ships & of the seas), and this weekend the regional Young Adult Retreat will take place as scheduled at St. John the Baptist of Tampa Bay.

May we continue to offer such praises and opportunities for strengthening our faith, now, and all the days of our lives. I remain,

Paternally yours with blessings and with love in our Lord,

+ A L E X I O S
Metropolitan of Atlanta

Abraham the Righteous & his nephew Lot

The holy Patriarch Abraham, born a pagan, ten generations after Noah, when the knowledge of God had perished from among men, became the beginning of God's dispensation for the universal renewal and salvation of man. He was called out of his country--the land of the Chaldees, that is, Mesopotamia--to the land of Canaan, and received the promise that through his seed all the nations of the earth should be blessed; through his singular faith in the promises of God, he was justified before the giving of the Law and the coming of Grace; through his willingness to sacrifice Isaac, he portrayed the love wherewith God loved the world in sacrificing His only-begotten Son. The greatness of Abraham, and the trials that he and his righteous nephew Lot underwent, are set forth in the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament, chapters twelve through twenty-five. Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Fourth Tone

From on high didst Thou descend, O Compassionate One; to burial of three days hast Thou submitted that Thou mightest free us from our passions. O our Life and Resurrection, Lord, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for Apostle James, Son of Alphaeus in the Third Tone

O Holy Apostle James, intercede with the merciful God that He grant unto our souls forgiveness of offences.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Sixth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:36-53

At that time, having risen from the dead, Jesus went up and stood among His disciples and said to them, "Peace be with you." But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; handle Me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, He said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave Him a piece of broiled fish [and some honeycomb], and He took it and ate before them. Then He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about Me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then He opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name in all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands, He blessed them. While He blessed them, He parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the Temple blessing God.

Sixth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Tone. Psalm 75.11,1.
Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.
Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:16-18; 7:1.

Brethren, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.

Plagal Fourth Tone.

Gospel Reading

3rd Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 7:11-16

At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

3rd Sunday of Luke

Sunday School Starts BACK!

Dear Church Members,

As we step into Fall, we are so happy to Welcome the children in our community Back to Sunday School! My name is Emilia Merisanu and I feel honored to be teaching our kids along with Nicole Yacamenko and Liliana Raileanu. We cordially invite you to bring your little ones to join us each week, after communion, as we gather together to know Christ, by unraveling God's word. And what better way for our children to grow into faithful Christians is there, but by knowing and living according to the Bible's teachings that tells us how we can obtain new life through a personal relationship with God. Your children will simply enjoy a warm, friendly atmosphere where God’s Word is taught through engaging, kids-friendly and meaningful activities, as we will be tackling together real-life topics such as the importance of praying, being kind in any situation, or the power of forgiveness, encouraging them to live what they learn everywhere they go.

We are looking forward to seeing each and every one of our wonderful children on Sunday!

Sincerely,

Emilia Merisanu

P.S. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Wisdom of the Fathers

That dead man was being buried, and many friends were conducting him to his tomb. But there meets him Christ, the Life and Resurrection, for He is the destroyer of death and of corruption; He it is "in Whom we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28); He it is Who has restored the nature of man to that which it originally was; and has set free our death-fraught flesh from the bonds of death.
St. Cyril of Alexandria
Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke, Homily 36.42, p. 153., 5th Century

The virgin's son met the widow's son. He became like a sponge for her tears and as life for the death of her son. Death turned about in its den and turned its back on the victorious one.
St. Ephrem the Syrian
Commentary on Tatian's Diatessaron, 6.23. (Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. vol. 3: Luke, Intervarsity Press)
