VIRTUAL SUNDAY SCHOOL IS LIVE!

The Fathers, the Religious Education Board and the Sunday School team have created video classroom plans to virtually connect all of our Sunday School students grouped by age.  Every Sunday, we will be implementing video classrooms using Zoom for students and parents.  A new subject will be taught each week.   The goal is to connect with our children to make sure they know we are thinking of them, missing them, and continue to teach the importance of our Orthodox faith especially now during Lent, Holy Week, and Pascha.

To sign into the virtual Sunday School classrooms, Assigned Group leaders will be sending you a weekly invitation from Zoom and all you need to do is RSVP to obtain access. If you registered last Sunday you do not need to register - the group leaders will autmatically include you future Sunday sessions in the Zoom invitation.

If you do not have Zoom on your computer, please follow the one-time, step by step process to download Zoom to your computer or other devices.  To download and install the Zoom Application, please go to https://zoom.us/download and from the Download Center, click on the Download button under “Zoom Client For Meetings”. This application will automatically download when you start your first Zoom Meeting.  It is free for 40 minutes and up to 100 invitees.

The Sunday School schedule will be as follows:

11:00am -  Kindergarten - Group Leader, Georgia Petrakis, gdouveas@outlook.com

11:30am - Grades 1 - 6 - Group Leader, Athena Frangides, athenafrangides@yahoo.com

12:00pm Noon - Grades 7 - 11 - Group Leader, Nicolas Tcharos, nicolast@cisco.com

12:30pm - Grade 12 - Group Leader, Ted Tsortos, ttsortos@gmail.com

Father Nebojsa will be attending all sessions and will be available to partner with teachers to answer any questions.

For help in enrolling your children or downloading Zoom or for other questions, please call Vicki Ryan at 408-858-4774 or Father Nebojsa at 707-315-7823.

ORTHODOXY 101: ROAD TO GOLGOTHA

Father Nebojsa will be offering the final installment of Orthodoxy 101: Road to Golgotha - on Monday, April 6th at 6:30 pm following the Paraklisis Service.

A Zoom invite will be sent to anyone interested in attending the virtual lesson  who responds to Father by Sunday at noon.

Please send Fr. Nebojsa an email directly at frnebojsa@gmail.com if you are interested in attending the class. The session will last around 40 minutes.

We are offering vigil candle(s) to be lit by Father Demosthenes and Father Nebojsa along with an opportunity to submit names to be prayed for at the Prothesis (Preparation) and at the Paraklesis services scheduled for the week.  When lit, the vigil candles last for one week.  Please see the online form on our website:

ST. NICHOLAS: TOGETHER, AT HOME

These last few weeks have been a new experience for all of us.  We have also been blessed with the opportunity to reflect upon our lives, our families, and our friends like never before.  Have you taken a family walk? Did you cook something new?  Did you make a phone call when you would have sent a text?  Did you say one more prayer?  Just because we are at home does not mean we are not Together.

Share what you and your loved ones are doing while sheltering in place! Send photos, videos, stories to: 75ypc@saintnicholas.org, to be shared on our SNC website & media sites. St Nicholas Sheltering in Place to Stay Healthy & Safe!

After this challenging time has passed, all remaining money shall be dedicated to our ongoing Philanthropic efforts.

In order to provide ongoing support, National Philoptochos has gathered resources to help cope with the anxiety  brought on by the COVID-19 Pandemic. These can be  found at: www.philoptochos.org/whats-happening/.

We encourage everyone to stay connected during this difficult time! Maintaining connections with friends and family via phone calls, texts, and video meetings during this period of sheltering in place, will help reduce anxiety.

Faith in our mission unites and empowers us to make a difference. Working together, with the love and blessings of God, we will continue our work to lessen the pain, loss and suffering of the most fragile in our society. May God bless you and your loved ones.

MISSIONS MINISTRY

The Corona virus pandemic has also hit India, and no doubt will strike some of the children.  Sister Nektaria wrote in an email to us a couple of days ago that she is trying to stock on food for a month, since a 21-day lock down has been implemented by the country.  There is crisis in the market and food is scarce.  Afraid of spreading the virus to the children, she is not allowing staff to come in the campus, so the older girls help to cook.  There are many small children in both hostels so cleaning, washing clothes and cooking will be a challenge in the next couple of months.

As you can imagine, they will depend on us now more than ever to get through these trying times. Now, during Lent, we are encouraged to help the less fortunate.  Jesus said, “Allow the little children to come to me, for such is the kingdom of Heaven.” We urge you to help those little ones, now, during Lent, through checks made to Saints Peter & Paul Missions Ministry and sent to the church or at the Fili-inc.com website.  For more information, please contact Maria Aji at (408) 425-6967.

BILL WILSON CENTER - PHILOPTOCHOS/YOUTH PROJECT

We will not accept items for the Bill Wilson Center during the period the Church is mandated to "shelter in place."  We look forward to accepting items as soon as the mandate is withdrawn.  However, if you prefer, we will accept checks made payable to St. Anna Philoptochos with a notation of "Bill Wilson Center" and mailed to the Church.

REALOPTIONS

We will not accept items for RealOptions during the period the Church is mandated to "shelter in place."  We look forward to accepting items as soon as the mandate is withdrawn.  However, if you prefer, we will accept checks made payable to St. Anna Philoptochos with a notation of "RealOptions" and mailed to the Church.  For more information please contact Ruth Duterte ruthrad1@aol.com  or 408-483-3009.

FESTIVAL BOUTIQUE

We will not accept items for the Festival Boutique during the period the Church is mandated to "shelter in place."  We look forward to accepting items as soon as the mandate is withdrawn.  For more information, contact Laurie Sahines, Festival Boutique Chairperson, at lsahines@comcast.com.

SAINT NICHOLAS - HONORING THE PAST WITH A VISION TO THE FUTURE

2020 marks the 75th anniversary year of the establishment of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

In light of the  Shelter in Place order, planned events and celebrations have been suspended.   We wish to continue to honor individuals and groups who were important to the development of our community and served selflessly.

The candidates for the honor should be women and men whose accomplishments are truly outstanding to the St. Nicholas Church community.   A major criterion for selection should be service that enhances and betters the lives of our parish.   Such activities are felt throughout the church community.  These individuals have exercised considerable influence through their service.  The ideal candidate also inspires others to better serve our community.

If you know someone you wish to nominate for this honor, please e-mail the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee at: 75ypc@saintnicholas.org with that person’s name and a brief paragraph on their contributions to our community.  Groups as well as individuals are eligible for consideration.

CONFESSIONS

Confessions with Father Demosthenes are available by appointment only.  Please call the church office or Father Demosthenes directly at 408-784-9364.

PASTORAL VISITS

In case of a special need and you would like a pastoral visit, the priests would be happy to visit after receiving a call from an immediate family member due to privacy concerns.   Please text or call either Fr. Demosthenes at 408-784-9364 or Father Nebojsa at 707-315-7823 or call the church office at 408-246-2770.

Ninth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:19-31

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe."

Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

Epistle Reading

1st Mode.

Ἀδελφοί, Χριστὸς δὲ παραγενόμενος ἀρχιερεὺς τῶν μελλόντων ἀγαθῶν, διὰ τῆς μείζονος καὶ τελειοτέρας σκηνῆς, οὐ χειροποιήτου, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν, οὐ ταύτης τῆς κτίσεως, οὐδὲ διʼ αἵματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων, διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος εἰσῆλθεν ἐφάπαξ εἰς τὰ ἅγια, αἰωνίαν λύτρωσιν εὑράμενος. Εἰ γὰρ τὸ αἷμα ταύρων καὶ τράγων, καὶ σποδὸς δαμάλεως ῥαντίζουσα τοὺς κεκοινωμένους, ἁγιάζει πρὸς τὴν τῆς σαρκὸς καθαρότητα, πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὃς διὰ πνεύματος αἰωνίου ἑαυτὸν προσήνεγκεν ἄμωμον τῷ θεῷ, καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησιν ὑμῶν ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων, εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν θεῷ ζῶντι;

Prokeimenon. 1st Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-14.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt
The Reading is from Mark 10:32-45

At that time, Jesus took his twelve disciples, and he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Wisdom of the Fathers

But let no man be troubled at the apostles being in such an imperfect state. For not yet was the cross accomplished, not yet the grace of the Spirit given. But if thou wouldest learn their virtue, notice them after these things, and thou wilt see them superior to every passion.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 65 on Matthew 20, 2,3,4,6. B#54, pp.399-401,403., 4th Century

For with this object He reveals their deficiencies, that after these things thou mightest know what manner of men they became by grace. ... No one shall sit on His right hand nor on His left.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 65 on Matthew 20, 2,3,4,6. B#54, pp.399-401,403., 4th Century

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 1st Mode

The stone had been secured with a seal by the Judeans, * and a guard of soldiers was watching Your immaculate body. * You rose on the third day, O Lord * and Savior, granting life unto the world. * For this reason were the powers of heaven crying out to You, O Life-giver: * Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ; * glory to Your eternal rule; * glory to Your dispensation, only One who loves mankind.

Apolytikion for Sun. of St. Mary of Egypt in the Plagal 4th Mode

In thee the image was preserved with exactness, O Mother; for taking up thy cross, thou didst follow Christ, and by thy deeds thou didst teach us to overlook the flesh, for it passeth away, but to attend to the soul since it is immortal. Wherefore, O righteous Mary, thy spirit rejoiceth with the Angels.

Apolytikion of Saint Nicholas

An example of the faith and a life of humility, as a teacher of self-control you did inspire and lead your flock, and through the truthfulness of your deeds, were exalted by greatness through your humility, uplifting all, and by poverty gaining strength. Father and hierarch Saint Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 2nd Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.
