Sixth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:36-53

At that time, having risen from the dead, Jesus went up and stood among His disciples and said to them, "Peace be with you." But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; handle Me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, He said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave Him a piece of broiled fish [and some honeycomb], and He took it and ate before them. Then He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about Me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then He opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name in all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands, He blessed them. While He blessed them, He parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the Temple blessing God.

Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ἀναστὰς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκ νεκρῶν ἔστη ἐν μέσῳ τῶν Μαθητῶν, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Εἰρήνη ὑμῖν. Πτοηθέντες δὲ καὶ ἔμφοβοι γενόμενοι, ἐδόκουν πνεῦμα θεωρεῖν. Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal 2nd Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 6:12-20.

Brethren, "all things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food" -- and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two shall become one flesh." But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit which belong to God.

Sunday of the Prodigal Son

The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have filled his belly with the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'"

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal 2nd Mode

When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You.

In our Light A Candle program, vigil candle(s) are lit along with an opportunity to submit names to be prayed for at the Prothesis (Preparation).  When lit, the vigil candles last for one week.  Please see the online form on our website or use the link below.  When filling out the online form, please note that only first names are needed, preferably the baptized names, and it's helpful to designate if prayers will be for health or for repose.

Special Announcements

FDF RECOGNITION SUNDAY

Again congratulations to all of our dance groups for their outstanding performances!  At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy this Sunday, March 3rd, Father James will ask all the dance group participants and their directors to come forward to be recognized in church.


SATURDAY OF THE SOULS

A Saturday of the Souls (Psychosavato) service will be on Saturday, March 9th with Orthros beginning at 8:30am followed by the Liturgy at 9:30am and Memorial.  You can drop the names of deceased Orthodox Christian family members, relatives and friends in a special, marked box in the Narthex and you can bring a small dish of kollyva to the service.


PARAKLESIS SERVICE AND ORTHODOXY 101 - MONDAYS

* Please note: Paraklesis and Orthodoxy 101 Class is cancelled on Monday, March 4th

LENTEN ALMS PROJECT – ONE DAY OF FOOD FOR AN UNHOUSED PERSON

Our Saint Nicholas Community will be preparing Meal Kits for people who are currently living in unstructured housing (tents, lean-tos, sheds or vehicles) to be distributed by City Team Ministries. 

Just what does a One Day Meal Kit for an unhoused person consist of? Two bottles of water, a tube of yogurt, two pouches of tuna fish, a serving of applesauce, a bag of nuts, cheese crackers, a granola bar, a fruit leather and a wet wipe. That is a day’s worth of food if you are living on the street. 

Sunday School Students will be accepting donations in front of the Church and during Coffee Hour on March 10th, 17th and 31st.  Our goal is to complete 200 Kits.  The supplies for each kit cost approximately $10.  If you would like purchase supplies or sponsor one of the items, we ask you to select from our Amazon Wish List which takes advantage of Bulk Buying: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/PG8YXHQ0H3YM/ref=nav_wishlist_lists_2

JOIN THE KENTIMA (NEEDLECRAFT) MINISTRY!

Join the Kentima Ministry this Lent as we meet during coffee hour to build new skills and fellowship. Beginning with embroidery basics the class will look to build up to traditional projects while exploring styles and designs from all over Greece. The first meeting will be held on Sunday, March 31st in the Seniors Room at the front of the small hall. We will begin about 10 minutes into coffee hour, grab yourself a snack and head over! All ages are welcome, children must be accompanied by an adult. All items needed to begin will be supplied, please RSVP to Meredith Panayotopoulos at 408-849-9552 so we can be sure to have enough on hand. If you have expertise you are willing to share, please reach out as well!


AHEPA CRABFEED FUNDRAISER!

Our San Jose 2024 AHEPA Family Event is here! Don't miss it, buy your tickets now!  Our annual Crab Feed Fundraiser is on Saturday, April 13th in the Community Center at St. Nicholas Church from 6pm to 10pm.  We will be honoring our spiritual leader, Father James, and Presvytera Vasso.

GREEK FLAG RAISING

The annual Greek Flag Raising, in recognition of Greek Independence Day, will be held on Monday, March 25th at 5:00pm at the San Jose City Hall Plaza, 200 E Santa Clara Street. Facilitated by AHEPA Silicon Valley Chapter 251and Daughters of Penelope Daphne #29, the ceremony will be hosted by Councilmember Pam Foley.  

There will also be a reception on the City Hall Tower 17th floor immediately following the ceremony compliments of the Order of AHEPA & Daughters of Penelope San Jose Chapters.

Please note that in order to get validated parking, you need to be in the City Hall Garage before 5 pm. After 5pm, it’s locked and you can only exit the parking structure. The garage is located off of 6th Street at 45 S Sixth St., San Jose, 95113.


BAY AREA PROJECT MEXICO TRIP OPPORTUNITY THIS JUNE

We invite you to join parishioners from the Resurrection parish in Castro Valley who will journey to Mexico this summer on a mission trip to build homes for poor working families just south of the border.  We will depart Castro Valley on June 25th and return July 1st. VOLUNTEERING AT SECOND HARVEST

ST. NICHOLAS SUNDAY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP SPONSORS NEEDED

It’s that time again!  The time when our St. Nicholas Sunday School Class of 2024 will be embarking on the world of college life.  Our graduates will be attending trade schools, jr. colleges and universities.  The years may change but the thing that is constant is the expense of attending. Tuitions, books, living expenses, all these plus more have risen greatly and we are looking once again to you for help.

DIG IN! ARCHAEOLOGY AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM (AAS)

AAS is a pre collegiate, tuition free, online program focused on Greek archaeology and cultural heritage and is designed for middle school and high school students, 13 to 17 years old. 

The AAS Program consists of a series of modules and an immersive curriculum on topics related to archaeological methods, ancient Greek history, classical studies, and cultural heritage. 

Upon completion of the program, students receive a certificate of attendance. 

Classes meet on Sundays from 1:00 to 3:00 pm PST, beginning March 10, 2024 and ending on April 28, 2024. For details and to apply, visit www.archaeologyafterschool.org

YOUTH SUMMER CAMP - ST. NICHOLAS RANCH

All Youth ages 8-18 from across our Metropolis are invited to attend our Metropolis Summer Camp this July at St. Nicholas Ranch & Retreat Center in Dunlap, CA. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends, reunite with old friends, and learn more about our faith. Online camper registration is open, and spots are quickly filling up.

We at St. Nicholas are hoping to get a good group together for Session 3! 

The Metropolis is also looking for dynamic and faithful young adults, ages 19 or older, to serve as part of the camp staff. They are also in need of medical and lifeguard staff, so please encourage anyone you know who would be an outstanding addition to the Metropolis Staff to apply.

School Age Greek Language Classes (3-18 years old)

In-person classes are offered on Tuesdays & Thursdays 5:00 pm - 6:45 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am - 11:45 am (pending registration numbers)

Zoom classes are time flex and are offered Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Fridays.

In addition to the classes, several assemblies take place annually to celebrate Greek Independence Days (October 28th and March 25th), Christmas, and the end-of-the-school-year party. Parents and other family members participate while the students recite poems, skits, songs, and dances.

Adult Greek Language Classes (18 years and older)

New Testament Greek: Tuesdays 6:30 - 9:00 pm

Intermediate Conversational Greek: Thursdays 6:30 - 9:00 pm

COFFEE HOUR TEAMS ARE COMING BACK!

We are excited to announce that with Father James' blessing, we will be discontinuing the majority of youth-ministry hosted coffee hours on Sundays and bringing back a team-led coffee hour.  This way we hope each team will only be responsible for 2 coffee hours per year.  If you haven't already been approached and are interested in having your own team or would like to be placed on a team, please send an email to: coffeehour@saintnicholas.org OR call Penny Pagonis at (408) 772-6229 or Nicole Perakis at (408) 250-0967.  


CHOIR

ST. ANNA PHILOPTOCHOS - SECTION 8 HOUSING

The Philoptochos and the church sometimes receives inquiries from parishioners who are searching for low income or section 8 housing.  If you are a landlord or know of anyone who provides section 8 housing, please email Connie Chrysoglou at cchrysoglou@gmail.com and we will place you or your contact on a list of potential providers.  We will then give the provider list to any parishioner who is needing assistance.  If you are interested in being a section 8 housing provider, you will need to contact your local housing authority to make an application and to find out more about the process and decide if this is something that you would want to pursue.  The church will only be providing the list to people inquiring about this and will not intercede in any way or become involved in the vetting process. It will be up to the landlord to determine if there is a match.  Section 8 housing rental reimbursement to landlords begins from $1740 for a one-bedroom house/apartment up to $3696 for a four-bedroom unit.


HOPE/JOY

We will plan on holding our meetings at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month (directly after Greek School).  Please mark your calendars.  

We hope that all students in grades K-5th can join us! This year, Father Nebojsa has planned an exciting curriculum focusing on the Story of Creation.  Each monthly lesson will be concentrated on a particular day of this journey.  Each meeting will be scheduled for approximately one hour and will include a discussion with Father, an interactive activity and/or craft, refreshments and fellowship.  We want to be inclusive of everyone so please feel free to reach out to Helene if you have any concerns: 209.324.4918.

The Holy Martyrs Eutropius, Cleonicus, and Basiliscus

The Martyrs, who were from Amasia, were fellow soldiers and kinsmen of Saint Theodore the Tyro (see Feb. 17). They were betrayed to the Governor Asclepiodotus as Christians, during the reign of Diocletian (284-305). After many torments, Eutropius and Cleonicus were crucified; Basiliscus was not slain together with them, but was shut up in prison, in the hope that with time he might change his mind and sacrifice to the idols. He was beheaded on May 22; see also the account on that day.
