Welcome to St George Church of Kingston

WE ARE NOW PERMITTED TO GATHER WITHIN GUIDELINES
It has been a blessing to see those that have attended. We have missed you all.

We encourage you to stay safe and not take any risks. The virus has not dissipated, so we need to continue to be vigilant.

We have welcomed back Linda, our Choir Director. We also have Karen and Ileana joining her in the choir loft, along with Stavros. Each has a microphone and are maintaining social distancing guidelines.  We look forward to being able to have our full choir back in the choir loft each Sunday when it is safe to do so. All are welcome to sing from their places in the church pews. If we are able, we will welcome other choir members to the choir loft when it is safe. Please maintain social distancing, do not share microphones and wear masks, as singing has been shown to spread the virus more than speaking or breathing.

Please join us as we stream our services online. We met with our tech person regarding some of the difficulties we have had with losing the signal. We made some adjustments and hopefully the issue is resolved.

The link appears further below in this bulletin. We continue to improve the quality of the transmission, adding microphones and balancing the sound levels of each.

So... is it safe to attend Divine Liturgy?
We will do our best to follow guidelines to minimize risk.
Please be aware that opening the church is allowed NOT because there is no further risk of contracting the Covid-19 virus. We are allowed to do so because it has been calculated by the State of New York that the health system can manage the expected increase in new cases resulting from this new permission.

Please join us only if your health permits. Elderly members, members with compromised immune systems, respiratory issues, fever or symptoms of the Covid-19 virus or persons exposed to someone with the Covid-19 virus,
should not attend.

Masks and social distancing are required (families sit together).
Please sanitize your hands upon entering the church.
Pews and floor will be marked for social distancing.
Please ask for candles and they will be handed to you.
Red candles will be taken to the front by a Parish Council member
Please do not congregate following liturgy, but proceed to your cars.
Only pre-determined individuals may be in the choir loft.
Antidoro will be provided in small wax paper bags - one per family unit.
Please place your offering directly in the slot on top of the candle stand.

No tray will be passed. Please place your offering in candle stand, or
you may give by text to 833-396-0633.

MORE THAN JUST FOLLOWING RULES....

“…in the end, to be Christian is not simply to follow rules and assent to propositions; to be Christian is to love in the form of the greatest commandment. Like being a dancer, it is to perform love in such a way that love (God) has seized our being.”

-Dr. Aristotle Papanikolaou

“Every temple of the Lord is a house of divine Presence and a house of prayer.
Every temple is also a house of peace. May the soul of all those who enter into this holy
temple to take part in the assembly of God, become itself a house of peace.”

The Work of Jesus Christ: “…it is our Orthodox teaching that the Church continues the work of Christ on earth.  When laypeople sing in the choir, teach Sunday school, instruct their children to pray, etc., they are doing the work of the Church.”

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 10:1-10.

Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law, that every one who has faith may be justified. Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on the law shall live by it. But the righteousness based on faith says, Do not say in your heart, "Who will ascend into heaven?" (that is, to bring Christ down) or "Who will descend into the abyss?" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved.

Gospel Reading

5th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 8:28-34; 9:1

At that time, when Jesus came to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one would pass that way. And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine." And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood. And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city.

Wisdom of the Fathers

Now, should any one say, "And wherefore did Christ fulfill the devils' request, suffering them to depart into the herd of swine?" this would be our reply, that He did so, not as yielding to them, but as providing for many objects thereby.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 28 on Matthew 8, 4th Century

One, to teach them that are delivered from those wicked tyrants, how great the malice of their insidious enemies: another, that all might learn, how not even against swine are they bold, except He allow them; a third, that they would have treated those men more grievously than the swine, unless even in their calamity they had enjoyed much of God's providential care. For that they hate us more than the brutes is surely evident to every man.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 28 on Matthew 8, 4th Century

Proclus & Hilary the Martyrs of Ancyra

These Martyrs contested in Ancyra in 106, during the reign of the Emperor Trajan. Saint Proclus was seized as a Christian and, confessing his faith, was burned on his sides and belly, was hung upon a beam with heavy stones tied to his feet, and finally was taken away to be shot with arrows. As he was being led forth, his nephew Hilary encountered him and greeted him, and was himself seized. After his uncle had been slain with arrows, Hilary, because he would not deny Christ, was tormented, then beheaded.

'Ως των αιχμαλωτων ελευθερωτης, και των πτωχων υπεραπιστης, ασθενουντων ιατρος, βασιλεων υπερμαχος, Τροπαιοφορε Μεγαλομαρτυς Γεωργιε, πρεσβευε Χριστω τω Θεω, σωθηναι τας ψυχας ημων.

Liberator of captives, defender of the poor, physician of the sick, and champion of kings, O trophy-bearer, Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

The Words We Choose

06/23/2020

A few years after graduating from seminary, a young priest was serving as an assistant priest in a parish in Long Island. Picking up the phone one day, he heard the voice of his Dogmatics professor from seminary. The professor politely asked, “How do you like your parish?” The young priest responded that he loved it and felt lucky to be there. The response from his professor would ring in his ears forever. “Luck is not an Orthodox concept,” the professor told him. “We say we are blessed.” From that day forward, the young priest replaced the word “lucky” with the word “blessed.”
