In his welcoming remarks, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America expressed his joy in welcoming the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Serbia and highlighted the spirit of cooperation between the Churches, especially in the United States.

NEW YORK – Following the formal announcement that Leadership 100 Board of Trustees approved a grant of five million dollars for Saint Nicholas National Shrine, His Eminence Archbishop of America celebrated this historic decision. “Today, Leadership 100 has again responded to the call of need, as they have time and time again in the history of our Archdiocese. We thank the entirety of the membership of Leadership 100, not only for this grant, but for their continued confidence in Saint Nicholas National Shrine, and their dedication to its completion.”

Notes

Regarding letter of recommendation requests from Fr. Panteleimon

Please note that during late winter Fr. Panteleimon receives many requests (often as many as 30 or 40) for letters of recommendation.  Father asks that you give him at least one week (7 days) to process these requests.  Please also note that, when letters are completed, we ask you to pick them up in the office yourselves as we don't want to be the cause of applications not being complete, and/or parts of applications not being with the rest of the application.  Thank you for your help with this.

Confession is a beautiful and God blessed sacrament of the church, and we should all partake of it prior to the resurrection of our Lord.

Please note that Fr. Panteleimon will be hearing confessions up to and including Lazarus Saturday (April 11). He will not be hearing Easter confessions after that.

Wauwatosa Avenue Long Term Closure Starting March 2

From the City of Wauwatosa

Wauwatosa Avenue (between Garfield and Milwaukee Avenues) will be closed for construction through September 1, 2020

Closing Wauwatosa Avenue

We will be closing Wauwatosa Avenue between Garfield and Milwaukee Avenues on Monday, March 2, 2020 after the morning commute hours. This will be a long term closure through September 1, 2020 for construction as we replace utilities under the street and repave Wauwatosa Avenue.

The detour route will be Bluemound, North Avenue, and Mayfair Road.

Why are we doing construction in this area?

We're repaving the road due to its condition, replacing storm sewer with larger pipes to help with stormwater management, and replacing aging water mains.

Surrounding Area

This project also includes utility work along side streets and the resurfacing of Melrose Avenue from 74th to Wauwatosa Avenue. The contractor will likely stage equipment on Wauwatosa Avenue as well as side streets.

    Dear Reverend Fathers and Parishioners: The Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians - Metropolis of Chicago is pleased to offer again this year the Michael B. Petrovich Memorial Scholarship. Among his many and varied accomplishments, Dr. Petrovich (1922-1989) served as a distinguished history professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and long-time choir director at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Madison, Wisconsin. To this day, many of our Orthodox choirs continue to sing the beautiful liturgical music he composed and graciously left as part of his legacy. The Scholarship will be awarded to one parishioner of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago who is seeking a Bachelors of Arts degree or higher in Music Theory, Music Composition, Voice, Choral Music, Byzantine Chant, Choral Conducting, Piano, Organ, Music Education, or other related field of study deemed appropriate by the scholarship committee. The parishioner must be a graduating high school senior or currently-enrolled college student. The Scholarship is made possible through the Michael B. Petrovich Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is administered by the Federation and recognizes the importance of educating and training its church musicians. It is expected that the Scholarship recipient will use this training, in part, in service to the Greek Orthodox Church and its ministries. Included with this letter are the Guidelines and the Application for the Scholarship, along with a flyer to display at your parish. It is our hope that you will pass this information along to those who might be interested. The Scholarship recipient will receive a one-time award in the amount of $500. The deadline for submitting the Application is April 1, 2020. The Scholarship award recipient will be notified on June 1, 2020.     From June 7-14: When Orthodox young people make the transition to college life, they face a myriad of spiritual, social, mental and health-related challenges. Lighthouse is a week-long summer camp ministry of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago designed to walk high school senior grads through an Orthodox understanding of vocation and arm them with the tools they need to hold fast to their faith during their college years. The Metropolis’ Summer Camp programs accepts campers between their 6th grade and 11th grade years in middle school and high school but does not accept high-school seniors. Currently, there is no ministry serving high-school seniors with the aim of preparing them for college. Lighthouse will be that ministry. Sunday of Orthodoxy

For more than one hundred years the Church of Christ was troubled by the persecution of the Iconoclasts of evil belief, beginning in the reign of Leo the Isaurian (717-741) and ending in the reign of Theophilus (829-842). After Theophilus's death, his widow the Empress Theodora (celebrated Feb. 11), together with the Patriarch Methodius (June 14), established Orthodoxy anew. This ever-memorable Queen venerated the icon of the Mother of God in the presence of the Patriarch Methodius and the other confessors and righteous men, and openly cried out these holy words: "If anyone does not offer relative worship to the holy icons, not adoring them as though they were gods, but venerating them out of love as images of the archetype, let him be anathema." Then with common prayer and fasting during the whole first week of the Forty-day Fast, she asked God's forgiveness for her husband. After this, on the first Sunday of the Fast, she and her son, Michael the Emperor, made a procession with all the clergy and people and restored the holy icons, and again adorned the Church of Christ with them. This is the holy deed that all we the Orthodox commemorate today, and we call this radiant and venerable day the Sunday of Orthodoxy, that is, the triumph of true doctrine over heresy.

Theophylact the Confessor, Bishop of Nicomedia

Theophylact was from the East; his native city is unknown. In Constantinople he became a close friend of Tarsius, who afterwards became Patriarch of Constantinople (see Feb. 25).Theophylact was made Bishop of Nicomedia. After the death of Saint Tarsius, his successor Nicephorus (see June 2) called together a number of Bishops to help him in fighting the iconoclasm of Emperor Leo the Armenian, who reigned from 813-820. Among them was Euthymius, Bishop of Sardis (celebrated Dec. 26), who had attended the holy Seventh Ecumenical Council in 787 - he was exiled three times for the sake of the holy icons, and for defying the Emperor Theophilus' command to renounce the veneration of the icons, was scourged from head to foot until his whole body was one great wound, from which he died eight days later, about the year 830; Joseph of Thessalonica (see July 14); Michael of Synnada (see May 23); Emilian, Bishop of Cyzicus (see Aug. 8); and Saint Theophylact, who boldly rebuked Leo to his face, telling him that because he despised the long-suffering of God, utter destruction was about to overtake him, and there would be none to deliver him. For this, Theophylact was exiled to the fortress of Strobilus in Karia of Asia Minor, where, after 30 years of imprisonment and hardship, he gave up his holy soul about the year 845. Leo the Armenian, according to the Saint's prophecy, was slain in church on the eve of our Lord's Nativity, in 820.

At that time, two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, "What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?" And they stood still looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see." And he said to them, "O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He appeared to be going further, but they constrained him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?" And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, who said, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:24-26, 32-40.

Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated -- of whom the world was not worthy -- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Wisdom of the Fathers

Moses... was himself saved by means of wood and water before the Law was given, when he was exposed to the Nile's currents, hidden away in an Ark (Exod. 2:3-10). And by means of wood and water he saved the people of Israel, revealing the Cross by the wood, Holy Baptism by water (Exod. 14:15-31). Paul, who had looked upon the mysteries, says openly, 'They were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud' (I Cor. 10:2). He also bears witness that, even before the events concerning the sea and his staff, Moses willingly endured Christ's Cross, 'Esteeming', he says, 'the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt' (Heb. 11:26). For the Cross is the reproach of Christ from the standpoint of foolish men. As Paul himself says of Christ, 'He endured the cross, despising the shame' (Heb. 12:2).
