Encyclical of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and the Eparchial Synod on the Covid-19 Pandemic (Coronavirus)

03/06/2020

The appearance of the Covid-19 Pandemic (Coronavirus) throughout the world and in the United States has created fear, anxiety, and genuine concern. All of these need to be taken seriously and no one’s fears should be dismissed out of hand. Already, religious bodies are responding in similar ways, but ways that are not necessarily consistent. In order to assist the Faithful in their own response, this statement is meant to guide and inform us all.

Thursday, March 12th, 2020

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

With the outbreak of the Covid-19 (coronavirus) in our local community, we, the executive committee and Fr. Panteleimon, convened and discussed the matter at length.   In order to best protect our community and be socially responsible we feel that at this time it is necessary to suspend or reschedule the following groups and events until March 23rd.  We will monitor the situation and make further decisions based on the current information available.  All scheduled church services shall continue as scheduled.

Ministries:   JOY, GOYA, Dance Groups, Bible Studies, Athletics, Golden Agers, and Philoptochos are suspended.

Events:   March 15th General Assembly & March 19th Parish Council meeting to be rescheduled at a later date.

HospitalityWednesday evening Lenten meals and Sunday coffee hour are suspended.

At this time, we will continue to have Greek and Sunday School classes.  Any decision to suspend or alter current classes will be based on Wauwatosa School Board’s directives.

Our Friday evening Fish Fry will continue as scheduled.  Any volunteers that feel uneasy about fulfilling their obligation, please contact your Team Captain and we can make the necessary adjustments.

Epiphany daycare shall continue its regular business hours.

The Archdiocese has sent these 10 directives based on the instructions of the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) that we will put into effect immediately.

  1.  All parishes will provide stations in the Narthex and/or Nave for the Faithful to disinfect their hands as they enter the Church.
  2. Signs will be posted at the entrance that recommend sick persons not attend the Services, but participate via television or the Internet (URL should be posted as well)
  3. The clergy will not offer their hands to be reverenced and will refrain from touching the faithful either through handshakes or an embrace.
  4. Signs will be posted recommending that honor be shown to Icons and the blessing cross by only bowing.
  5. No books – Liturgical or Scriptural, will be kept in the pews. Parishioners will be instructed to bring their own books from home.
  6. The Faithful will not receive the Antidoron from the Clergy, but on their own as they leave the church.
  7. In the case of the use of flowers (Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross, Palm Sunday, Holy Friday), the Faithful will take them on their own as they leave the church. On Holy Wednesday (Holy Unction), each priest will anoint each Faithful using separate cotton-tipped swabs.
  8.  The Eucharist will be distributed as per usual.
  9. In concelebrations, the clerical “Kiss of Peace” will be through bowing to one another. In parishes where the laity exchange the “Kiss of Peace,” they will avoid contact through bowing to one another.
  10. After every service, all liturgical objects and surfaces to be thoroughly cleaned.

If you are sick or feel like you are becoming ill, please use common sense and stay home.  These measures shall be reviewed and adjusted as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Fr. Panteleimon & Parish Council Executive Committee

As of Friday, March 13th, Greek School and Sunday School classes are cancelled until further notice.

Regarding letter of recommendation requests from Fr. Panteleimon

Please note that during late winter Fr. Panteleimon receives many requests (often as many as 30 or 40) for letters of recommendation.  Father asks that you give him at least one week (7 days) to process these requests.  Please also note that, when letters are completed, we ask you to pick them up in the office yourselves as we don't want to be the cause of applications not being complete, and/or parts of applications not being with the rest of the application.  Thank you for your help with this.

____________________

Important

Confession is a beautiful and God blessed sacrament of the church, and we should all partake of it prior to the resurrection of our Lord.

Please note that Fr. Panteleimon will be hearing confessions up to and including Lazarus Saturday (April 11). He will not be hearing Easter confessions after that.

If you would like to get a confession in, please contact father as soon as possible.

From the City of Wauwatosa

Wauwatosa Avenue (between Garfield and Milwaukee Avenues) will be closed for construction through September 1, 2020

Post Date: 02/12/2020 4:00 PM

Closing Wauwatosa Avenue

We will be closing Wauwatosa Avenue between Garfield and Milwaukee Avenues on Monday, March 2, 2020 after the morning commute hours. This will be a long term closure through September 1, 2020 for construction as we replace utilities under the street and repave Wauwatosa Avenue.

The detour route will be Bluemound, North Avenue, and Mayfair Road.

You can sign up for construction updates on the project webpage.

Why are we doing construction in this area?

We're repaving the road due to its condition, replacing storm sewer with larger pipes to help with stormwater management, and replacing aging water mains.

Surrounding Area

This project also includes utility work along side streets and the resurfacing of Melrose Avenue from 74th to Wauwatosa Avenue. The contractor will likely stage equipment on Wauwatosa Avenue as well as side streets.

Dear Reverend Fathers and Parishioners: The Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians - Metropolis of Chicago is pleased to offer again this year the Michael B. Petrovich Memorial Scholarship. Among his many and varied accomplishments, Dr. Petrovich (1922-1989) served as a distinguished history professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and long-time choir director at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Madison, Wisconsin. To this day, many of our Orthodox choirs continue to sing the beautiful liturgical music he composed and graciously left as part of his legacy. The Scholarship will be awarded to one parishioner of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago who is seeking a Bachelors of Arts degree or higher in Music Theory, Music Composition, Voice, Choral Music, Byzantine Chant, Choral Conducting, Piano, Organ, Music Education, or other related field of study deemed appropriate by the scholarship committee. The parishioner must be a graduating high school senior or currently-enrolled college student. The Scholarship is made possible through the Michael B. Petrovich Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is administered by the Federation and recognizes the importance of educating and training its church musicians. It is expected that the Scholarship recipient will use this training, in part, in service to the Greek Orthodox Church and its ministries. Included with this letter are the Guidelines and the Application for the Scholarship, along with a flyer to display at your parish. It is our hope that you will pass this information along to those who might be interested. The Scholarship recipient will receive a one-time award in the amount of $500. The deadline for submitting the Application is April 1, 2020. The Scholarship award recipient will be notified on June 1, 2020. Thank you for your assistance, and please do not hesitate to contact Audrey Polite ((219) 742-7679/lencovello@sbcglobal.net) if you should have any questions after reviewing the enclosed materials.

    Lighthouse

From June 7-14: When Orthodox young people make the transition to college life, they face a myriad of spiritual, social, mental and health-related challenges. Lighthouse is a week-long summer camp ministry of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago designed to walk high school senior grads through an Orthodox understanding of vocation and arm them with the tools they need to hold fast to their faith during their college years. The Metropolis’ Summer Camp programs accepts campers between their 6th grade and 11th grade years in middle school and high school but does not accept high-school seniors. Currently, there is no ministry serving high-school seniors with the aim of preparing them for college. Lighthouse will be that ministry. Saints and Feasts

02_palamas2
March 15

Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas

This divine Father, who was from Asia Minor, was from childhood reared in the royal court of Constantinople, where he was instructed in both religious and secular wisdom. Later, while still a youth, he left the imperial court and struggled in asceticism on Mount Athos, and in the Skete at Beroea. He spent some time in Thessalonica being treated for an illness that came from his harsh manner of life. He was present in Constantinople at the Council that was convened in 1341 against Barlaam of Calabria, and at the Council of 1347 against Acindynus, who was of like mind with Barlaam; Barlaam and Acindynus claimed that the grace of God is created. At both these Councils, the Saint contended courageously for the true dogmas of the Church of Christ, teaching in particular that divine grace is not created, but is the uncreated energies of God which are poured forth throughout creation: otherwise it would be impossible, if grace were created, for man to have genuine communion with the uncreated God. In 1347 he was appointed Metropolitan of Thessalonica. He tended his flock in an apostolic manner for some twelve years, and wrote many books and treatises on the most exalted doctrines of our Faith; and having lived for a total of sixty-three years, he reposed in the Lord in 1359.

His holy relics are kept in the Cathedral of Thessalonica. A full service was composed for his feast day by the Patriarch Philotheus in 1368, when it was established that his feast be celebrated on this day. Since works without right faith avail nothing, we set Orthodoxy of faith as the foundation of all that we accomplish during the Fast, by celebrating the Triumph of Orthodoxy the Sunday before, and the great defender of the teachings of the holy Fathers today.

Holy Apostle Aristobulos of the Seventy, Bishop of Britain

Saint Aristobulos, the brother of Saint Barnabas, was ordained to be bishop in Britain by the Apostle Paul, who mentions him in his epistle to the Romans (16:10). He suffered many afflictions at the hands of the pagans, but also brought many to Christ. Having established the Church there, he finally reposed in peace.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Sixth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:36-53

At that time, Jesus, having risen from the dead, stood in the midst of his disciples and said to them, "Peace to you." But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See my hands and feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them.

Then he said to them, "These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high."

Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and they returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.

Sixth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 1:10-14; 2:1-3.

"IN THE BEGINNING, Thou, Lord, didst found the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of thy hands; they will perish, but thou remainest; they will all grow old like a garment, like a mantle thou wilt roll them up, and they will be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years will never end." But to what angel has he ever said, "Sit at my right hand, till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet?" Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?

Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him.

Plagal Second Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas
The Reading is from Mark 2:1-12

At that time, Jesus entered Capernaum and it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak thus? It is a blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your pallet and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins"-he said to the paralytic-"I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home." And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Mode

Angelic powers were above Thy tomb, and they that guarded Thee became as dead. And Mary stood by the grave seeking Thine immaculate Body. Thou hast despoiled Hades and wast not tried thereby. Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst grant us life. O Thou Who didst arise from the dead, Lord, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for Sun. of St. Gregory Palamas in the Plagal Fourth Mode

Light of Orthdoxy, pillar and teacher of the Church, adornment of monastics, invincible champion of theologians, O Gregory thou wonderworker, boast of Thessalonica, herald of grace: ever pray that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Fourth Mode

To you, Theotokos, invincible Defender, having been delivered from peril, I, your city, dedicate the victory festival as a thank offering. In your irresistible might, keep me safe from all trials, that I may call out to you: "Hail, unwedded bride!"

Wisdom of the Fathers

Now Matthew indeed saith, that "they brought him," but the others, that they also broke up the roof, and let him down. And they put the sick man before Christ, saying nothing, but committing the whole to Him.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 29 on Matthew 9, 1. B#54, pp. 195, 196, 4th Century

For though in the beginning He Himself went about, and did not require so much faith of them that came unto Him; yet in this case they both approached Him, and had faith required on their part. For, "Seeing," it is said, "their faith;" that is, the faith of them that had let the man down.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 29 on Matthew 9, 1. B#54, pp. 195, 196, 4th Century
