Notes

Basil for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

on Monday, September 14th

If you can, please bring (cut or potted) basil before Monday, for the celebration of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Our church has been approved for Phase 3

A few things to be aware of when you are attending services during the "Level Three" phase:

  1. First of all, if you feel sick, please stay home (we can reschedule you for a different Sunday);
  2. Please only come on Sundays you have pre-registered for;
  3. All attendees must wear a mask during their time in the church;
  4. The Metropolis has asked that we keep track of those in attendance.  To do this, one of our parish council members will be marking those present.  Please give your name if asked;
  5. Please follow the directions of the parish council members while in the church;
  6. Please maintain a 6-foot ddistance between those around you;
  7. Holy Communion will be distributed as normal - again, please follow the directions of the parish council as you come forward to receive;
  8. After church has ended, please follow the directions of the parish council in exiting the church - and we ask that you do not linger outside around the church.

Our church will continue to provide online live streaming of church services through Facebook Live on our Facebook page.  We are currently facing some technical difficulties and cannot stream on YouTube Live.  Fr. Panteleimon and the Parish Council are working to resolve this as soon as possible.

Plus, now you can "Light a Candle - Say a Prayer".  Just visit https://onrealm.org/StsCnH/-/give/candles to make your donation online and send us an email (father.pgd@gmail.com and church@stsconstantinehelenwi.org) with the number and type of candles along with who/what you would like us to pray for and will do so at our next church service.

New Procedure for Church Attendance Signup!

In order to better track attendance and seating availability on a weekly basis, we are making changes to the signing up process for church attendance.

Everyone will have to sign up for each specific Sunday that they would like to attend church services.  Registration events have been setup in Realm for the all August Sundays; you may have received the relevant automatic notifications already.  If you have family that do not have internet access, you can add them to your registration as a guest.  Otherwise, please let them know that they can call me (414.778.1555) during office hours and I will register them.

Moving forward, since life happens, if you have signed up for a service but cannot attend, please cancel your reservation so that someone else can attend.  If you need help, please contact me.

If you have not joined Realm, our online community, yet, please send me an email requesting an invitation.  In Realm, go to Events, choose the "Sunday Matins/Divine Lit..." for the Sunday you would like to register, and click on the "Register by date" to register.

As always, please contact me if I can be of assistance,

Wauwatosa Avenue Scheduled to Reopen

Learn about upcoming closures on Swan Blvd. and Ludington Ave. related to this construction project
Post Date: 09/03/2020 2:52 PM

Wauwatosa Avenue (between Milwaukee Avenue and Garfield Avenue) is scheduled to reopen to traffic tomorrow evening September 4. The contractor is finishing pavement markings, signage, landscaping, and other punch list items. On this project, we replaced aged water and sewer infrastructure and resurfaced the street due to its condition.

This is an important milestone on this construction project, and there is other work related to this contract still happening:

  1. Work on Melrose and Rogers Avenues continues, and these roads will be paved in the coming weeks.
  2. Starting September 8, the contractor will be closing Swan Blvd between Stickney Avenue and Menomonee River Parkway. They are scheduled to mill and pave and replace curb on Swan Blvd. There will be road closures to traffic on this section of Swan Blvd.
  3. Also starting September 8, another crew will be closing the street to work on Ludington Avenue between North Avenue and Milwaukee Avenue. Our contractors will be spot repairing various utilities under the street and replacing curb and sidewalk at intersections on Ludington Avenue. The street will be reopened prior to winter, but there may be additional work in 2021 that will need to be completed.

Community

Realm (onrealm.org) & it's app, Connect, is not for one-way communication, from our church leaders to you.  It can (& should) be used for the communiation between the members of each Group.  JOY is the first ministry that has adopted Realm as their communication tool.  Ask them.

By the way, would anyone like to lead a Group? What if we created  a Group where the members could help each other out during this pandemic?  If someone is immunocompromised, for instance, or has young children, and can't go to the grocery store, they could ask if anyone else is going and if they are willing to pick up whatever they need (or, pick up their prescription, or a 10,000 piece puzzle for the kids...)  and deliver to their house... Email the church (church@stsconstantinehelenwi.org) your ideas but keep in mind, that no Groups can be created/activated until someone steps up to lead them.  (Hint: It's not hard... just accepting requests to join the Group and keeping the conversation going).

Want to test it out?  You can join our Prayer Requests Group (In Groups, search in Community for Prayer Requests).

The Resurrection of Saint Nicholas

“Rebuild My Church”

“The Resurrection of Saint Nicholas”

Re-Broadcast of 60 Minutes on CBS
Sunday, Sept. 6th

“The Resurrection of Saint Nicholas” (originally shown on April 12, 2020) will be re-broadcast on 60 Minutes this Sunday, Sept. 6th.  Check your local listing for the time where you live.

With a brief update on the transformation of the project since the election of Archbishop Elpidophoros and the recommencement of construction on August 3, 2020, CBS’s Scott Pelley paints a moving portrait of the struggle to rebuild the only House of Worship destroyed on 9/11.

Tune in to hear the emotional testimonies of parishioners, and to join in the ongoing mission to finish the Church and National Shrine by the Twentieth Anniversary of 9/11 — September 11, 2021.

Your donations are as important as ever to erect Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine on a firm foundation for the future.

Bible Studies

The Bible Study is meeting during the summer. We will meet each Friday at 10:30 a.m. on Zoom.

During these next summer weeks, we will be studying the Psalms. We try to prayerfully and reverently read each word to find another drop of eternal truth and all the words together make up the boundless ocean of the Eternal Truth God has so graciously given us. Reading the Bible is more than reading a book, but it gives us life. Please come and join us.

AHEPA #43 - 9th Annual AHEPA MKE Hellenic Golf Outing

Dear Brothers of AHEPA Milwaukee,

AHEPA Milwaukee Chapter 43 will be hosting our annual golf outing and fundraiser on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at Ironwood Golf Course in Sussex, Wisconsin. Our lives may be faced with new challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic, but we will continue to pursue our AHEPA mission in support of education and our Hellenic Community. While many events have been forced to be cancelled or postponed, AHEPA will continue to move forward.

We are taking as many precautions as possible to hold a safe and healthy event. Face masks will be available for those who wish to wear one and social distancing measures will be put in place where possible. The Grand Buffet Dinner and Awards Presentation will be held outside on the patio if weather permits, and golfers will also have the option to opt out of the Dinner/Awards Presentation and take their dinners with them.

We understand that some of our longtime supporters will be unable to attend this year for a variety of reasons, so we need everyone’s support more than ever. For those unable to attend this year, we are asking for your continued support with a Hole Sponsorship or raffle donation.

AHEPA Milwaukee’s Scholarship Foundation is now celebrating its 61st year of promoting education and the values of Hellenism. Since the program's inception, we have awarded scholarships totaling over $700,000 to qualified students in our community. Our Milwaukee Chapter also supports many other Hellenic sporting and educational programs both locally and nationally.

We are looking forward to another exciting, fun-filled day and hope we can count on your continued support. The following Hole Sponsorship opportunities are available. Your business will be recognized as a sponsor throughout the event. All proceeds benefit Scholarship Programs and Community Projects.

Thank you again for your continued support!

Sincerely,
Steve Itsines,

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew’s Message on Indiction

09/01/2020

It is a shared conviction that, in our time, the natural environment is threatened like never before in the history of humankind. The magnitude of this threat becomes manifest in the fact that what is at stake is not anymore the quality, but the preservation of life on our planet. For the first time in history, man is capable of destroying the conditions of life on earth.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Second Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:1-8

When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back, for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid.

Second Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 16:13-24.

Brethren, be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. Now, brethren, you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints; I urge you to be subject to such men and to every fellow worker and laborer. I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicos, because they have made up for your absence; for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such men. The churches of Asia send greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord. All the brethren send greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. If any one has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Fourth Mode.

Gospel Reading

13th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 21:33-42

The Lord said this parable, "There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?'"

13th Sunday of Matthew

Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τήν παραβολὴν ταύτην· ῎Αλλην παραβολὴν ἀκούσατε. ἄνθρωπός τις ἦν οἰκοδεσπότης, ὅστις ἐφύτευσεν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ φραγμὸν αὐτῷ περιέθηκε καὶ ὤρυξεν ἐν αὐτῷ ληνὸν καὶ ᾠκοδόμησε πύργον, καὶ ἐξέδοτο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν. ὅτε δὲ ἤγγισεν ὁ καιρὸς τῶν καρπῶν, ἀπέστειλε τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς λαβεῖν τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτοῦ. καὶ λαβόντες οἱ γεωργοὶ τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ ὃν μὲν ἔδειραν, ὃν δὲ ἀπέκτειναν, ὃν δὲ ἐλιθοβόλησαν. πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους πλείονας τῶν πρώτων, καὶ ἐποίησαν αὐτοῖς ὡσαύτως. ὕστερον δὲ ἀπέστειλε πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ λέγων· ἐντραπήσονται τὸν υἱόν μου. οἱ δὲ γεωργοὶ ἰδόντες τὸν υἱὸν εἶπον ἐν ἑαυτοῖς· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κληρονόμος· δεῦτε ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτὸν καὶ κατάσχωμεν τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ. καὶ λαβόντες αὐτὸν ἐξέβαλον ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, καὶ ἀπέκτειναν. ὅταν οὖν ἔλθῃ ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, τί ποιήσει τοῖς γεωργοῖς ἐκείνοις; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· κακοὺς κακῶς ἀπολέσει αὐτούς, καὶ τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἐκδώσεται ἄλλοις γεωργοῖς, οἵτινες ἀποδώσουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς καρποὺς ἐν τοῖς καιροῖς αὐτῶν. λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς· οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε ἐν ταῖς γραφαῖς, λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας· παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη, καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν;

Wisdom of the Fathers

Many things does He intimate by this parable, God's providence, which had been exercised towards them from the first; their murderous disposition from the beginning; that nothing had been omitted of whatever pertained to a heedful care of them;...
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 68 on Matthew 21, 4th Century

And observe also both His great care, and the excessive idleness of these men for what pertained to the husbandmen, He Himself did ... and He left little for them to do; to take care of what was there, and to preserve what was given to them.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 68 on Matthew 21, 4th Century

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode

Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the Angel, and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, the women disciples of the Lord spake to the Apostles exultantly: Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, granting great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Miracle of Michael in Colossae in the Fourth Mode

Supreme Commanders of the Hosts of Heavens, we, the unworthy, importune and beseech thee that by thy supplications thou encircle us in the shelter of the wings of thine immaterial glory, guarding us who now fall down and cry to thee with fervour: Deliver us from dangers of all kinds, as the great marshal of the heavenly hosts on high.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

In your holy birth, Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were rid of the shame of childlessness; Adam and Eve of the corruption of death. And so your people, free of the guilt of their sins, celebrate crying: "The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, who nourishes our life."
