Climicus
April 11

Sunday of St. John Climacus

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on March 30, where his biography may be found. He is celebrated today because his book, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, is a sure guide to the ascetic life, written by a great man of prayer experienced in all forms of the monastic polity; it teaches the seeker after salvation how to lay a sound foundation for his struggles, how to detect and war against each of the passions, how to avoid the snares laid by the demons, and how to rise from the rudimental virtues to the heights of Godlike love and humility. It is held in such high esteem that it is universally read in its entirety in monasteries during the Great Fast.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Eleventh Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 21:14-25

At that time, Jesus revealed himself to his disciples after he was raised from the dead, and he said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go." (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, "Follow me."

Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?" When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?" Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!" So, the word went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die; but Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?" This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

Eleventh Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Third Mode. Psalm 46.6,1.
Sing praises to our God, sing praises.
Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20.

BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

Third Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of St. John Climacus
The Reading is from Mark 9:17-31

At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise."

Sunday of St. John Climacus

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode

Let the Heavens rejoice; let earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead hath He become. From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us, and hath granted great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Sun. of St. John Climacus in the Plagal Fourth Mode

With the streams of thy tears, thou didst cultivate the barrenness of the desert; and by thy sighings from the depths,thou didst bear fruit a hundredfold in labours; and thou becamest a luminary, shining with miracles upon the world, O John our righteous Father. Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Fourth Mode

To you, Theotokos, invincible Defender, having been delivered from peril, I, your city, dedicate the victory festival as a thank offering. In your irresistible might, keep me safe from all trials, that I may call out to you: "Hail, unwedded bride!"

Church Phone Clarification

For the last few months and the foreseeable future, all calls to the church during office hours (Mon-Fri, 9am - 5pm) are forwarded to my cell phone, regardless if I'm working in the church office or from home.  Please don't be confused if I'm on the other line and your call is forwarded to my personal voicemail.  Additionally, when working from home if I call you the caller ID may show "Angelopoulos Dim".

Thank you for your understanding,

Nikki

Our church is on Phase 3

A few things to be aware of when you are attending services during the "Level Three" phase:

  1. First of all, if you feel sick, please stay home (we can reschedule you for a different Sunday);
  2. Please only come on Sundays you have pre-registered for;
  3. All attendees must wear a mask during their time in the church;
  4. The Metropolis has asked that we keep track of those in attendance.  To do this, one of our parish council members will be marking those present.  Please give your name if asked;
  5. Please follow the directions of the parish council members while in the church;
  6. Please maintain a 6-foot distance between those around you;
  7. Holy Communion will be distributed as normal - again, please follow the directions of the parish council as you come forward to receive;

Our church will continue to provide online live streaming of church services through Facebook Live on our Facebook page.  We are currently facing some technical difficulties and cannot stream on YouTube Live.  Fr. Panteleimon and the Parish Council are working to resolve this as soon as possible.

Plus, now you can "Light a Candle - Say a Prayer".  Just visit https://onrealm.org/StsCnH/-/give/candles to make your donation online and send us an email (father.pgd@gmail.com and church@stsconstantinehelenwi.org) with the number and type of candles along with who/what you would like us to pray for and will do so at our next church service.

Procedure for Church Attendance Signup!

In order to better track attendance and seating availability on a weekly basis, we are making changes to the signing up process for church attendance.

Everyone will have to sign up for each specific Sunday that they would like to attend church services.  Registration events have been setup in Realm for the following few Sundays; you may have received the relevant automatic notifications already.  If you have family members that do not have internet access, you can add them to your registration as guests.  Otherwise, please let them know that they can call me (414.778.1555) during office hours and I will register them.

Moving forward, since life happens, if you have signed up for a service but cannot attend, please cancel your reservation so that someone else can attend.  If you need help, please contact me.

If you have not joined Realm, our online community, yet, please send me an email requesting an invitation.  In Realm, go to Events, choose the "Sunday Matins/Divine Lit..." for the Sunday you would like to register, and click on the "Register by date" to register.

As always, please contact me if I can be of assistance,

Nikki

Community

Realm (onrealm.org) & it's app, Connect, is not for one-way communication, from our church leaders to you.  It can (& should) be used for the communiation between the members of each Group.  JOY is the first ministry that has adopted Realm as their communication tool.  Ask them.

By the way, would anyone like to lead a Group? What if we created  a Group where the members could help each other out during this pandemic?  If someone is immunocompromised, for instance, or has young children, and can't go to the grocery store, they could ask if anyone else is going and if they are willing to pick up whatever they need (or, pick up their prescription, or a 10,000 piece puzzle for the kids...)  and deliver to their house... Email the church (church@stsconstantinehelenwi.org) your ideas but keep in mind, that no Groups can be created/activated until someone steps up to lead them.  (Hint: It's not hard... just accepting requests to join the Group and keeping the conversation going).

Want to test it out?  You can join our Prayer Requests Group (In Groups, search in Community for Prayer Requests).

During the Lenten season the Bible Study will not meet each Friday at 10:30 a. m.

Bible Study will resume on Friday, May 7th, at 10:30 in the Church Hall.

We are studying The Psalms. Each week, we try to prayerfully and reverently read each word to find another drop of eternal truth and all the words together make up the boundless ocean of Eternal Truth God has so graciously given us. Regarding letter of recommendation requests from Fr. Panteleimon

Please note that during late winter Fr. Panteleimon receives many requests (often as many as 30 or 40) for letters of recommendation.  Father asks that you give him at least 10 days to process these requests.  Please also note that, when letters are completed, we ask you to pick them up in the office yourselves as we don't want to be the cause of applications not being complete, and/or parts of applications not being with the rest of the application.  Thank you for your help with this.

Are you from Crete?

There are families in the Racine and Kenosha area from the Kimissis parish that are interested in starting a Wisconsin Cretan fellowship group. We are reaching out to the Milwaukee parishes as well to spread the word because they are welcome to join the group. This would include meetings, dinners, presentations and activities approximately bi monthly having to do with Cretan culture, history, art, orthodoxy, geography, etc.

This originally would not be part of the Pan Cretan Association of America, with chapters across the country, but after we have found a consistent group we would look to join their association as a Wisconsin chapter (they do not have one currently, the closest is centered in downtown Chicago). This would give us access to national conferences, scholarships, their magazine and additional funding.

Our goal is to have a meeting/presentation by May 20th, the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete in World War 2. We are specifically looking for families and/or youth, ages 15-25, as that is the demographic of those interested in Racine. If this is something you think that you, your family or someone you know would be interested in, please email ssavas@wisc.edu or call/ text 1-262-676-7737 for more info about who we are, what this group will be like, and how to join! Reaching out would be non committal, we look forward to hearing from you!

Have a blessed lent.

Wisdom of the Fathers

Seest thou how He now proceeds to lay beforehand in them the foundation of His doctrine about fasting? ... See, at any rate, how many blessings spring from them both. For he that is praying as he ought, and fasting, hath not many wants, and he that hath not many wants, cannot be covetous; ...
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 57 on Matthew 17,4,5. B#54, pp.355,356., 4th Century

... he that is not covetous, will be also more disposed for almsgiving. He that fasts is light, and winged, and prays with wakefulness, and quenches his wicked lusts, and propitiates God, and humbles his soul when lifted up. Therefore even the apostles were almost always fasting.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 57 on Matthew 17,4,5. B#54, pp.355,356., 4th Century

The Metropolis is proud to present to you its first-ever Annual Impact Report, which reports on key actions and developments taken in 2020.  The Report summarizes the financial performance of the Metropolis, provides a summary of the 10-year audit of sacramental registry data, reports on the current and newly created ministries, discusses the community outreach of the Metropolis and its parishes during 2020.  The Report is issued the day before the third anniversary of His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael’s Enthronement as spiritual leader of the Metropolis of Chicago.

In naming the report, our choice of wording was deliberate.  We want our faithful to have a better understanding of the impact we are making as a community, both on a local parish and regional Metropolis level.  We also want to celebrate the individual members of our faith community who are impacting their parishes and their communities in inspiring and meaningful ways.  This report represents the Metropolis of Chicago’s commitment to transparency and our accountability to our clergy and laity. Our collective work in 2020 is grounded on our faith in Jesus Christ. I offer glory and thanksgiving to God for His many blessings, and I express my sincere gratitude to the countless women and men across our six-state Metropolis who helped us reach new heights as a faith community.

His Eminence is requesting that all parishes and parish councils share the Annual Impact Report with your parishioners and communities, and begin a dialog with them about the issues presented in the Report, including ways in which parishes can meet the challenges of this new decade.  We are all asked to prayerfully consider how we can help the Church achieve have greater transformative impact on the world in 2021.
