Donations to help those in and around our community who are in need

Fr. Panteleimon keeps an envelope for donations made by parishioners to help whoever might come to the church in need.  That envelope is always in need of additional funds.  If you would like to donate to help those who come to our church in need, please either see Fr. Panteleimon, or leave a donation marked for this purpose in the church office.  Thank you and God bless.

Hospital Visits by Fr. Panteleimon

If parishioners or their family or friends are admitted to the hospital, please let the office know so that Father can go and visit them.  Thank you.

Did you know?

There are many ways to send your contributions to our church, other than cash or check.  For example, our newest option is to

Give by Text!

You can now give to our church by using your smartphone via text using debit/credit card or ACH payments.  It will take you about 2 minutes to set up your payment method, which is saved for future text gifts!  Just text our church's keyword, STSCNH to 73256 along with the amount, i.e. text STSCNH 25 to 73256.  Shortly after, you will receive a text with a link to our secure online text giving page where you can choose a specific fund and set up your payment method.  At the moment, the available funds you can give to by text are Stewardship, Candles, Maintenance, Fee (to pay for a church fee) or General Donation (default).

Online!

You know that you can also give online and setup recurring payments by visiting our website (give.stsconstantinehelenwi.org) and clicking on the "Click to Donate Online" button.  But if you download a free QR Code Scanner application and scan the following code, it will take you directly to the secure online donation page.  You can readily find this QR code on the front page of our weekly bulletins and on the back cover of The Vine.

Go ahead! Try it! It's so cool!!

Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops Report

The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops released  a new report "Fast Questions and Fast Answers about American Orthodox Bishops"  This essay offers plenty of interesting facts about the lives of our Bishops, as well as who they are as people. Here are a few examples of the questions that are answered in this mini-report:

  • What are our Bishops’ personal hobbies, talents and interests?
  • Prior to becoming a clergyman, have any of the American Orthodox hierarchs worked in some "secular" – not church-related – job positions?
  • How educated are American Orthodox Bishops?
  • Is being a Bishop a difficult "job?" What are the challenges that American Orthodox hierarchs face?

The report can be downloaded from the Assembly's website here:

Download this mini-report

Read this story and if you have any follow up questions, feel free to ask. Send your inquiries to: akrindatch@aol.com

It is the first essay in a new series called "Fast Questions and Fast Answers…," a group of mini-reports to be published in the next few months. And get ready for the upcoming mini-reports, such as "Fast Questions and Fast Answers:

  • …about the Geography of Orthodoxy in America"
  • …about Church Attendance in American Orthodox Christian Parishes"
  • …about Young Adult Parishioners"
  • …about Orthodox Students in American Colleges and Universities"

Many more mini-reports will follow.

Philoptochos: MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN 2018 AND PAY IT FORWARD

National Make A Difference Day was established in 1992 as the largest national community service day in the United States. It is held annually on the 4th Saturday in October, and millions of American citizens participate in this day of volunteerism to improve the lives of others.

In 2015, the first year of the Philoptochos Make A Difference initiative, chapters offered more than 4,000 good deeds. In 2016, National Philoptochos invited chapters across the country to join together with their parish families to offer 8500 multi-generational acts of kindness during the month of October to honor His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America, on the occasion of his name day, and also to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the founding of Philoptochos.

In 2017, Philoptochos’ goal was to teach children to engage in philanthropy and contribute to their communities.  Chapters responded with projects such as collecting canned food for the hungry, making “get well” cards for patients in children’s hospitals, assembling personal care kits for the homeless, collecting used blankets for animal shelters and sending “thank you” cards to Veterans for their service. In one community, members of Philoptochos and JOY joined together to sew and stuff heart pillows for children recovering from heart surgery.

This year, Philoptochos is asking chapters to choose three good deeds to bestow upon an individual or organization, and then ask that individual or organization to Pay It Forward by in turn bestowing a good deed on three other people or organizations.

Make A Difference with Philoptochos on National Make A Difference Day, Saturday, October 27 by:

  • Partner with children in your communities to perform good deeds
  • Capture the act with a photo or video.
  • Upload it to Facebook and/ or Instagram (be sure privacy settings are set to public for these posts) with the hashtag #PhiloptochosPaysItForward
  • Send your photos or videos to communications@philoptochos.org
  • All submissions will have a chance to be featured as the Philoptochos Facebook Cover Photo, on Instagram, and on the website.
  • Let's spark a chain of Positivity, Philoptochos!

"When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind" -Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

October 2018

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We pray this letter finds you well!  With the blessings of His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael we are happy to launch the St. Iakovos Retreat Center Annual Giving Campaign! The purpose of this campaign is to create sustainability and security for the future of our retreat center in order to serve the Metropolis and its generations to come.

As a nonprofit organization, we rely on our supporters to continue this blessed ministry through their prayers and contributions. We are reaching out to you because we feel you see the value and importance of the St. Iakovos Retreat Center. We hope you consider this request and find it in your heart to support the retreat center in this new opportunity.

The St. Iakovos Retreat Center has quickly become a home away from home to Orthodox Christians across the country. We have hosted thousands of campers, fostered numerous relationships through various retreats and programs, and have become a place of spiritual rejuvenation to our guests. In the brochure you will find some of the testimonials from a few people who have experienced the St. Iakovos Retreat Center and all it has to offer.

This ministry offers our guests the opportunity to engage in experiences which allow them to grow. In order to maintain this ministry that we have all worked so hard on, we invite you to participate in the Annual Donor Campaign. It is through your participation that we will serve the community for generation to come.

Here is how it works:
The brochure has a detachable pledge card. Please fill out the pledge card with your desired contribution and mail it to the St. Iakovos Retreat Center in the enclosed envelope. You can also visit www.GoSIRC.org to set up your annual donation. The annual giving options are as follows:

  • Platinum: $1,000
  • Gold: $500-$999
  • Silver: $100-$499
  • Bronze: $1-$99

We are grateful for your interest in this ministry thus far! It is through your commitment that the St. Iakovos Retreat Center is able to serve Orthodox Christians all throughout the country. If you are to have any questions please contact the retreat center at (262) 864-9090 or office@gosirc.org.

    2017 Scholarship Guide

Windy City has compiled this guide of scholarships that are available to Greek Americans. "We’re dedicated to providing resources for our community, and we’re so excited to present Greek American Scholarship Guide 2017. ... Find information here to begin your research and application process. Some deadlines have already passed this year, but later this year, applications for 2018 will be posted. That will give you time to work through this information and determine your own eligibility and what opportunities to pursue. With the ever-increasing cost of college education, we recommend that you apply for as many scholarships as you can – no matter how small. The numbers will add up and every dollar makes a difference. In this guide, find “mini profiles” of scholarship awards of more than $5000. Also find a list of links to other organizations that offer smaller awards. Look for ideas on other places to search for opportunities, as well as tips on applying and winning scholarships. A very special thank you to our sponsors. We’re grateful to The John C. Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council

On the Sunday that falls on or immediately after the eleventh of this month, we chant the Service to the 350 holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which gathered in Nicaea in 787 under the holy Patriarch Tarasius and during the reign of the Empress Irene and her son, Constantine Porphyrogenitus, to refute the Iconoclast heresy, which had received imperial support beginning with the Edict issued in 726 by Emperor Leo the Isaurian. Many of the holy Fathers who condemned Iconoclasm at this holy Council later died as Confessors and Martyrs for the holy Icons during the second assult of Iconoclasm in the ninth century, especially during the reigns of Leo the Armenian and Theophilus.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Ninth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:19-31

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe."

Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

Ninth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Daniel 3.26,27.
Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers.
Verse: For you are just in all you have done.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15.

Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned.

When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful.

All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

Fourth Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council
The Reading is from Luke 8:5-15

The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode

Let the Heavens rejoice; let earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead hath He become. From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us, and hath granted great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Sun. of the 7th Ecumenical Council in the Plagal Fourth Mode

Most glorified art Thou, O Christ our God, Who hast established our Fathers as luminous stars upon the earth, and through them didst guide us all to the true Faith. O Most Merciful One, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for the Church in the Fourth Mode

Having seen the image of Thy Cross in Heaven, and like Paul, having received the call not from men, Your apostle among kings entrusted the commonwealth to Thy hand, O Lord. Keep us always in peace, by the intercessions of the Theotokos, O only Friend of man.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Wisdom of the Fathers

For by seed here He means His doctrine, and by land, the souls of men, and by the sower, Himself .... For as the sower makes no distinction in the land submitted to him, but simply and indifferently casts his seed; so He Himself too makes no distinction of rich and poor, of wise and unwise, of slothful or diligent, of brave or cowardly; but He discourses unto all, fulfilling His part, although foreknowing the results.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 44 on Matthew 12, 4th Century

When you see life's pleasures, beware that they might not distract you, for they conceal death's snares. Likewise a fisherman casts not his hook to no purpose. As bait for his hook, the enemy uses the delusion of sensuality to arouse desire, that he might thereby catch men's souls and subject them to himself. A soul which has been caught to serve the enemy's will then serves as a snare for other souls, for it conceals the grief of sin with its apparent delight.
St. Ephraim the Syrian
A Spiritual Psalter no 43, pg. 74, 4th century
