WE NEED YOUR HELP TO LAUNCH A NEW MINISTRY HERE REACHING OUT TO OUR COLLEGE YOUTH

Recent studies have found that as many as 60% of our youth go to college and largely drop-out of church life.  As a parish, we need to do whatever we can to reach out to this group - letting them know that they are on our minds and in our prayers.  With that in mind, we are asking for donations from our parish to help our new college outreach ministry.  The goal for now is to send fall and spring care-packages to our college kids as well as to host a lunch for them - with our parish priest and parish leaders - over winter and summer break.  Any donation is appreciated.  Please mark the donation, "College Ministry" so we know where to apply it.

Did you know?

There are many ways to send your contributions to our church, other than cash or check.  For example, our newest option is to

Give by Text!

You can now give to our church by using your smartphone via text using debit/credit card or ACH payments.  It will take you about 2 minutes to set up your payment method, which is saved for future text gifts!  Just text our church's keyword, STSCNH to 73256 along with the amount, i.e. text STSCNH 25 to 73256.  Shortly after, you will receive a text with a link to our secure online text giving page where you can choose a specific fund and set up your payment method.  At the moment, the available funds you can give to by text are Stewardship, Candles, Maintenance, Fee (to pay for a church fee) or General Donation (default).

Online!

You know that you can also give online and setup recurring payments by visiting our website (give.stsconstantinehelenwi.org) and clicking on the "Click to Donate Online" button.  But if you download a free QR Code Scanner application and scan the following code, it will take you directly to the secure online donation page.  You can readily find this QR code on the front page of our weekly bulletins and on the back cover of The Vine.

ACS Online Giving New Roof QR code

Go ahead! Try it! It's so cool!!

Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops Report

The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops released  a new report "Fast Questions and Fast Answers about American Orthodox Bishops"  This essay offers plenty of interesting facts about the lives of our Bishops, as well as who they are as people. Here are a few examples of the questions that are answered in this mini-report:

  • What are our Bishops’ personal hobbies, talents and interests?
  • Prior to becoming a clergyman, have any of the American Orthodox hierarchs worked in some "secular" – not church-related – job positions?
  • How educated are American Orthodox Bishops?
  • Is being a Bishop a difficult "job?" What are the challenges that American Orthodox hierarchs face?

The report can be downloaded from the Assembly's website here:

Download this mini-report

Read this story and if you have any follow up questions, feel free to ask. Send your inquiries to: akrindatch@aol.com

It is the first essay in a new series called "Fast Questions and Fast Answers…," a group of mini-reports to be published in the next few months. And get ready for the upcoming mini-reports, such as "Fast Questions and Fast Answers:

  • …about the Geography of Orthodoxy in America"
  • …about Church Attendance in American Orthodox Christian Parishes"
  • …about Young Adult Parishioners"
  • …about Orthodox Students in American Colleges and Universities"

Many more mini-reports will follow.

Philoptochos: MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN 2018 AND PAY IT FORWARD

National Make A Difference Day was established in 1992 as the largest national community service day in the United States. It is held annually on the 4th Saturday in October, and millions of American citizens participate in this day of volunteerism to improve the lives of others.

In 2015, the first year of the Philoptochos Make A Difference initiative, chapters offered more than 4,000 good deeds. In 2016, National Philoptochos invited chapters across the country to join together with their parish families to offer 8500 multi-generational acts of kindness during the month of October to honor His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America, on the occasion of his name day, and also to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the founding of Philoptochos.

In 2017, Philoptochos’ goal was to teach children to engage in philanthropy and contribute to their communities.  Chapters responded with projects such as collecting canned food for the hungry, making “get well” cards for patients in children’s hospitals, assembling personal care kits for the homeless, collecting used blankets for animal shelters and sending “thank you” cards to Veterans for their service. In one community, members of Philoptochos and JOY joined together to sew and stuff heart pillows for children recovering from heart surgery.

This year, Philoptochos is asking chapters to choose three good deeds to bestow upon an individual or organization, and then ask that individual or organization to Pay It Forward by in turn bestowing a good deed on three other people or organizations.

Make A Difference with Philoptochos on National Make A Difference Day, Saturday, October 27 by:

  • Partner with children in your communities to perform good deeds
  • Capture the act with a photo or video.
  • Upload it to Facebook and/ or Instagram (be sure privacy settings are set to public for these posts) with the hashtag #PhiloptochosPaysItForward
  • Send your photos or videos to communications@philoptochos.org
  • All submissions will have a chance to be featured as the Philoptochos Facebook Cover Photo, on Instagram, and on the website.
  • Let's spark a chain of Positivity, Philoptochos!

"When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind" -Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We pray this letter finds you well!  With the blessings of His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael we are happy to launch the St. Iakovos Retreat Center Annual Giving Campaign! It is through your participation that we will serve the community for generation to come.

Here is how it works:
The brochure has a detachable pledge card. Please fill out the pledge card with your desired contribution and mail it to the St. Iakovos Retreat Center in the enclosed envelope. You can also visit www.GoSIRC.org to set up your annual donation. The annual giving options are as follows:

Windy City has compiled this guide of scholarships that are available to Greek Americans. "We’re dedicated to providing resources for our community, and we’re so excited to present Greek American Scholarship Guide 2017. ... Find information here to begin your research and application process. Some deadlines have already passed this year, but later this year, applications for 2018 will be posted. Hilarion the Great

This Saint was born at Tabatha, near Gaza in Palestine, of pagan parents. Sent as a young man to Alexandria to be educated, he learned the Christian Faith and was baptized. While in Egypt he heard the fame of Saint Anthony the Great, and upon meeting that truly great man, the Father of monks, Saint Hilarion determined to devote himself also to the ascetical life. He returned to Gaza, when, he gave himself over to extreme fasting and unceasing prayer. Because of the miracles which he soon began to work, he found himself compelled by his growing renown to leave Gaza, to escape from the throngs of people coming to ask his prayers. In his journeys he visited Egypt, and came again with longing to the place where Saint Anthony had lived; but he was not able to remain in any one place for long, since despite all his attempts to conceal himself, the light of the grace that was in him could not be hid. After passing through Egypt and Libya, and sailing to Sicily, he came at last to Cyprus, where he ended the course of his life at the age of eighty, in the year 372.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Tenth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 21:1-14

At that time, being raised from the dead, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. The disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Tenth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Fourth Mode.

Gospel Reading

6th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 8:26-39

At that time, as Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, there met him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode

Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the Angel, and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, the women disciples of the Lord spake to the Apostles exultantly: Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, granting great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Hilarion the Great in the Plagal Fourth Mode

With the streams of thy tears, thou didst cultivate the barrenness of the desert; and by thy sighings from the depths, thou didst bear fruit a hundredfold in labours; and thou becamest a luminary, shining with miracles upon the world, O Hilarion our righteous Father. Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Wisdom of the Fathers

For if we, going about on the earth which is familiar and well known to us, being encompassed with a body, when we are journeying in a strange road, know not which way to go unless we have some one to lead us; how should the soul, being rent away from the body, and having gone out from all her accustomed region, know where to walk without one to show her the way?
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 28 on Matthew 8, 4th Century

Some say, 'Why do they [demons] possess people?' I answer those who wish to have this explained that the reason of these things is very deep. Somewhere one of His saints addressed God by saying, 'Your judgments are a vast abyss.' As long as we bear this in mind, we will perhaps not miss the mark.
St. Cyril of Alexandria
Commentary on Luke, Homily 44. (Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture; vol 3: Luke, Intervarsity Press)
