GOYA News

GOYA had a very busy December!  On December 3rd, they attended the Delaware Valley Youth Commission’s annual service project at St. Luke in Broomall, PA.  At the event, they separated and bagged gently used or new children’s clothing for donations to the Cradles to Crayons organization.

On December 10th, GOYA had their holiday outing at Peddler’s village.  They ate lunch at the Buttonwood Grill, walked around to see the Christmas Trees and did some holiday shopping!  Hot chocolate was a must!!  The day ended with a short drive to Shady Brook Farm to see the light show.  A good time was had by all!!

At the monthly GOYA meeting on December 18th, the Goyans decided to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Eastern Pennsylvania by raising money to purchase small denomination ($5-$10) gift cards to be used for the miscellaneous needs of families who are seeking treatment at A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, DE.  All donations will be given by the staff of A.I. DuPont and used to meet family needs.

At the meeting, the Goyans met with Mark Rodgers, a 19 year-old freshman at West Chester University, who is himself a survivor of childhood Leukemia.  His story motivated the youth to support this fight against this deadly blood cancer.  More information will follow as to how the Goyans will proceed with this special project during the month of January.

The next GOYA meeting will be this Sunday, January 8th in the library after Sunday School.

Ridesharing to Church

There are parishioners at  Annunciation who, by circumstances of their age or health, are unable to drive to church, but would very much like to be present at Liturgy. We are grateful for the parishioners who volunteer to serve in this ministry.

There are many ways we can reach out to help those who need assistance.  Offering a ride to church can be a simple gesture, but one that is heartfelt by those who would have no other way to join us at Liturgy.

If you  Need-a-Ride, or interested in volunteering to Offer-a-Ride, please contact the parish office (215) 6350316 or office@anngoc.org, and we will try to match you up based on your location.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode

The women disciples of the Lord heard from the angel, the joyful news of the Resurrection and the repeal of the sentence imposed upon our forefathers. With pride they said to the Apostles, "Death is vanquished, Christ our God is risen bestowing upon the world His great mercy."

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Theophany in the First Mode

Lord, when You were baptized in the Jordan, the veneration of the Trinity was revealed. For the voice of the Father gave witness to You, calling You Beloved, and the Spirit, in the guise of a dove, confirmed the certainty of His words. Glory to You, Christ our God, who appeared and enlightened the world.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

You appeared to the world today, and Your light, O Lord, has left its mark upon us. With fuller understanding we sing to You: "You came, You were made manifest, the unapproachable light."

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Seventh Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:1-10

At that time, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Seventh Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13.

BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

First Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Epiphany
The Reading is from Matthew 4:12-17

At that time, Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Sunday after Epiphany

2017 Archdiocesan Yearbook Dedicated to Archbishop Demetrios for 50 Years of Episcopal Ministry Now Available Online

12/30/2016

This year’s edition is highlighted by the dedication to Archbishop Demetrios, who was elected to the Episcopacy on June 20, 1967 and consecrated as Bishop a few months later on September 17. The Yearbook includes several pages in a full-color photo section which offer highlights of his five decades of episcopal ministry, especially his leadership of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

Encyclical of Archbishop Demetrios for the Feast of Saint Basil and the New Year

12/29/2016

He sends us as His voice into a world that continues to change. At the beginning of each calendar year we are reminded of this rapid change as we survey the events of the last twelve months. We are called as Orthodox Christians to meet this change with grace and truth. We do this as we commit to the timeless mission of the people of God to live and proclaim the Gospel. We also do this as seen in the breadth and substance of our ministries and through expanding and adapting our work to meet contemporary needs. We are sent by Christ with a message of hope and life and with the wisdom to navigate a changing and challenging world while sharing His grace in effective ways.
