Removal of the Relics of John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople

This event took place on this day in the year 438, when Saint Theodosius the Younger had been Emperor for thirty years; he was the son of Arcadius, and Eudoxia, who had exiled Saint John. The Archbishop of Constantinople at that time was Proclus, who had been the Saint's disciple (see Nov. 13 and Nov. 20).

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Second Mode

When You descended to death, O Immortal Life, then, the light of Your divinity destroyed Hades. When You raised the dead from the depths of darkness, all the heavenly powers cried out, "Glory to You our Christ, the Giver of Life."

Apolytikion for Relics of John Chrysostom in the Plagal Fourth Mode

The grace of your words illuminated the universe like a shining beacon. It amassed treasures of munificence in the world. It demonstrated the greatness of humility, teaching us by your own words; therefore, O Father John Chrysostom, intercede to Christ the Logos for the salvation of our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the First Mode

Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Second Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:1-8

When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back, for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid.

Second Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 48.3,1.
My mouth shall speak wisdom and the meditation of my heart shall bring forth understanding.
Verse: Hear this all you nations.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 7:26-28; 8:1-2.

Brethren, it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did this once for all when he offered up himself. Indeed, the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever. Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord.

First Mode.

Gospel Reading

15th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 19:1-10

At that time, Jesus was passing through Jericho. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."

15th Sunday of Luke

New Sunday Inclement Weather Policy

In our ongoing efforts to serve our community as best as we can, in the event of a snowfall we are implementing an OPENING ONE HOUR LATE option for Sunday liturgy to give everyone extra time to drive to church safely.

What this means for you:

  1. Sunday services will start an hour later: Matins at 9:30, liturgy at 10:30 am.
  2. Based on the weather forecast, a decision will be made by Fr. John and the Parish Council by Saturday noon if there is a need to go to OPENING ONE HOUR LATE for Sunday.
  3. If the snowfall is such that the roads are dangerous, Sunday services may be CANCELLED all together.
  4. You will be notified by email Saturday afternoon if we are OPENING ONE HOUR LATE, or if Sunday services are CANCELLED all together.
  5. A message will also be posted on our webpage, Facebook page, and church voice mail.
  6. The time change and message will apply to all Sunday activities.
  7. If you do not receive a message from church on Saturday, it means that liturgy times are normal on Sunday.
  8. As always, please use your best judgment when you choose to drive in snow, drive safely and remember: the ‘turtle’ wins this race!

We are also pleased to inform you that we have a new snow plowing company that takes care of our parking lot, sidewalks, pathways, and entrances to our church building. In the event of snowfall, everything will be cleaned and properly salted prior to Sunday’s liturgy and every weekday liturgy and church activity.

Spiritual Wisdom

The Generous Soul (part 2 of 4)

by Mark R. McMinn

The Science of Generosity

This inner tension between miserliness and generosity can also be seen in how we relate to others. We can work to control and manage the other, making clear our demands and expectations, or we can lean into trust, kindness, affection, respect, and forgiveness. Among people who are married, those living with the greatest generosity toward their partners are more satisfied in their relationships, have less conflict, and perceive a lower likelihood of divorce in the future. The miser in us may be good for 401(k) balances but not much else.

Social scientists are uncovering the benefits of generous living. Christian Smith and Hilary Davidson, authors of The Paradox of Generosity, note, “By giving ourselves away, we ourselves move toward flourishing. This is not only philosophical or religious teaching; it is a sociological fact.” Those who give 10 percent or more of their income and those who volunteer their time are more likely than others to report being very happy. Similarly, those who are generous in their relationships, offering their attention and emotions to others, tend to be happier than those who are less generous relationally. Generosity also has health benefits. Those who give more money, volunteer their time, and are relationally generous are more likely to be in excellent or very good health than others. And those who are more generous in these ways also report a clearer sense of their purpose in life.

The burgeoning science of generosity is encouraging as it demonstrates various benefits to living with open hands and hearts, but placing this science in a context of Christianity can help us further understand the source and meaning of generous living.

(To be continued next week)

Mark R. McMinn is a professor of psychology at George Fox University and author of The Science of Virtue: Why Positive Psychology Matters to the Church (Brazos Press, 2017).
