Sunday of the Prodigal Son

Through the parable of today's Gospel, our Saviour has set forth three things for us: the condition of the sinner, the rule of repentance, and the greatness of God's compassion. The divine Fathers have put this reading the week after the parable of the Publican and Pharisee so that, seeing in the person of the Prodigal Son our own wretched condition -- inasmuch as we are sunken in sin, far from God and His Mysteries -- we might at last come to our senses and make haste to return to Him by repentance during these holy days of the Fast.

Furthermore, those who have wrought many great iniquities, and have persisted in them for a long time, oftentimes fall into despair, thinking that there can no longer be any forgiveness for them; and so being without hope, they fall every day into the same and even worse iniquities. Therefore, the divine Fathers, that they might root out the passion of despair from the hearts of such people, and rouse them to the deeds of virtue, have set the present parable at the forecourts of the Fast, to show them the surpassing goodness of God's compassion, and to teach them that there is no sin -- no matter how great it may be -- that can overcome at any time His love for man.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Mode

O Christ, the angelic powers appeared at Your tomb, the guards were as dead, and Mary stood by the sepulcher, seeking Your sacred body. You destroyed Hades yet remained untouched by it. You encountered the Virgin and through her, bestowed Life. Glory to You who has risen from the dead!

Apolytikion for 1st and 2nd Finding of the Head of the Forerunner in the Fourth Mode

The Forerunner's sacred head, having dawned forth from the earth, doth send incorruption's rays unto the faithful, whereby they find healings of their ills. From on high he gathereth the choirs of the Angels and on earth he summoneth the whole race of mankind, that they with one voice might send up glory to Christ our God.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Third Mode

O Father, foolishly I ran away from Your glory, and in sin, squandered the riches You gave me. Wherefore, I cry out to You with the voice of the Prodigal, "I have sinned before You Compassionate Father. Receive me in repentance and take me as one of Your hired servants."

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 63.11,1.
The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord.
Verse: Oh God, hear my cry.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15.

Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

Grave Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of the Prodigal Son
The Reading is from Luke 15:11-32

The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have filled his belly with the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'"

Be Fruitful: Challenging Yourself to Abide in Order to Bear More Fruit

-By Jerry Root (Part two of two)

The message of the love and forgiveness of God and his desire that all might find the fulfillment they are looking for in him is too important to neglect.

Throughout the Gospels, we see the connection between leading others to Christ and directing the new believer to work in this great Kingdom enterprise. God loves people! So many live in ignorance of this fact. He wants them to know his love and deploys those who are abiding in that love to go and tell them. It is a privilege.

The man who had many demons cast out of him longs to go with Jesus. Jesus’ follow-up approach with that man was instead to go tell his family about him and tell them what Jesus has done for him. This man actually went out and proclaimed the gospel in ten cities.

After her encounter with Christ, the woman Jesus met at the well goes and proclaims what she has found to all in her city. Repeatedly in the Gospels, we see those who have had an encounter with Christ eager to tell others about him. In fact, Jesus called his disciples (the New Testament word for a disciple literally means “learner”) that they might “abide” in him; learn from him, by instruction and by contagion.

Then, he deploys them as apostles (the New Testament word for apostle literally means, “sent one” or more specifically “one sent with a message”). Christians who are true followers of Christ will abide in him, and tell others about his love and grace that those others too might know the love of God.

Back to the idea of fruitfulness. If churches are not fruitful, perhaps we should look first to our leadership. Characteristics for leaders are given in the Epistles. The lists of qualities are not exhaustive.

What if churches expected that those in leadership have a record of accomplishment in leading others to Christ—that is, of mentoring others to that level of Christian maturity where those others are also active, each in his or her own vocational context, in making disciples? In fact, no one should be in church leadership who has not yet cultivated these habits.

A church should recognize that if the leadership is not engaged in Christ’s mission in the world, the people will not be led to embrace their opportunities in this regard.

Of course, legalists are likely to arise and if they see their leadership is not reproducing disciples engaged in the work, they will condemn the leadership. That is not the way to tackle fruitlessness. If a church sees that leaders should have a degree of competence in this matter, then mentor them so that they can be proficient.

Jesus said that his disciples (learners) should abide in him and learn the missional arts. Then, once the problem of fruitlessness is tackled, on this level, make it a standard from then on to have leaders who mentor the Body of Christ to fulfill its missional objectives.

We may not always do well. G. K. Chesterton once wrote, “If a job is worth doing it is worth doing poorly.” That is, if something ought to be done, better it be done poorly than not at all.

Perhaps Jesus had something like this in mind when he said, “Abide in Me and bear fruit,” and if pruning is needed so you will bear more fruit, then he will be with you in the process for Kingdom good.

50th Anniversary Campaign Update

50_ann_logo

“Honoring Our Past, Building Our Future”

The theme of our 50th Anniversary Campaign is “Honoring Our Past, Building Our Future”.  Did you know that we are the 6th Oldest Greek Orthodox Parish in the United States and the oldest in Philadelphia?  Our community was founded in 1901 and on February 22, 1907, was granted a charter of incorporation by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with the official name of “The Greek Orthodox Community of Philadelphia”.  Greek immigrants from throughout the Easter Mediterranean region had begun settling in the Philadelphia area in the 1870s and established the community in order to worship and continue the Orthodox faith and Hellenic culture.  Once incorporated, the community set about establishing a permanent place of worship and on November 13, 1908, purchased All Saints Episcopal Church at 745 South 12th Street, converting it into an Orthodox Holy Temple dedicated to the Evangelismos/Annunciation and which became known affectionately as “Old Evangelismos”.  To this day, an icon of the Evangelismos from this Church leads the annual Greek Independence Day parade in Philadelphia to honor the roots of the entire Greek Orthodox community in Philadelphia.

The driving force behind the community in those early years was the Stephano brothers, originally from Alexandria, Egypt.  They envisioned the creation of a Greek Orthodox community and instituted a tithing system for the Greek immigrants who worked at their tobacco business.  Other early pioneers were John Farmakis, John Litras, Demetrious Asemopoulos, Sarantos Zavakos, John Nestopoulos, Thomas Pappas, Vasilios Athanasiou, John Strountsos, Fotios Politos, Athanasios Damianos, and others.  Their names are inscribed on the original Charter of Incorporation which still hangs in the Parish Office for all to see.

In order to accommodate the moving of parishioners from the city to the northern and western suburbs, the Parish was apportioned in 1963 with some parishioners forming St. Demetrios Parish in Upper Darby and others relocating Annunciation/Evangelismos to a temporary location at 504 Elkins Avenue in Elkins Park, PA.  On June 8, 1968, construction of the Hellenic Cultural Center began on our current site, formerly the Whitaker estate.  In fact, the heavy side doors to Cultural Center were reclaimed from the Whitaker estate to provide continuity on the site.  The Cultural Center was dedicated in 1969 and in March of 1971, the ground was blessed by Father Limberakis and other local clergy for the construction of the Holy Temple, which was completed in 1972.  On November 19, 1972, Archbishop Iakovos presided at the Thyranoixia (‘door opening ceremony”).  George and Lopi Pavlis became Godparents of the Holy Temple and were given the honor of turning the key and ceremoniously opening the door.

While our 50th Anniversary campaign honors the 50th Anniversary of our community in its present location, you can see that we have a long, rich history of devotion and dedication to our Orthodox Faith and our Evangelismos community.  If you have family photographs or recollections and stories that you would be willing to share, particularly of the early 1900s through the 1970s, please contact me at cdalson@comcast.net so we can add them to our archive and share them with the community.  We invite you to come to the office to see the original Charter, and when you are in the Narthex, to look at the plaques on the walls that honor the people involved in the building of our Church.  You will understand that many people gave generously of their time, talent and treasure to see the Community have a new home for worship and a secure future.  We honor them as we also continue their legacy and work to build a bright future for our beloved Evangelismos.
