April 14

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on April 1, where her life is recorded. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal First Mode

Let us worship the Word, O ye faithful, praising Him that with the Father and the Spirit is co-beginningless God, Who was born of a pure Virgin that we all be saved; for He was pleased to mount the Cross in the flesh that He assumed, accepting thus to endure death. And by His glorious rising, He also willed to resurrect the dead.

Apolytikion for Sun. of St. Mary of Egypt in the Plagal Fourth Mode

In thee the image was preserved with exactness, O Mother; for taking up thy cross, thou didst follow Christ, and by thy deeds thou didst teach us to overlook the flesh, for it passeth away, but to attend to the soul since it is immortal. Wherefore, O righteous Mary, thy spirit rejoiceth with the Angels.

The Apolytikion of the Annunciation/Evangelismos in the Fourth Mode

Today is the summary of our salvation, and the revelation of the age-old mystery. For the Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announces the good news of grace. Therefore, let us join him, and cry  aloud to the Theotokos: “Rejoice, Maiden full of grace! The Lord is with you.”

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-14

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

Ἀδελφοί, Χριστὸς δὲ παραγενόμενος ἀρχιερεὺς τῶν μελλόντων ἀγαθῶν, διὰ τῆς μείζονος καὶ τελειοτέρας σκηνῆς, οὐ χειροποιήτου, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν, οὐ ταύτης τῆς κτίσεως, οὐδὲ διʼ αἵματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων, διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος εἰσῆλθεν ἐφάπαξ εἰς τὰ ἅγια, αἰωνίαν λύτρωσιν εὑράμενος. Εἰ γὰρ τὸ αἷμα ταύρων καὶ τράγων, καὶ σποδὸς δαμάλεως ῥαντίζουσα τοὺς κεκοινωμένους, ἁγιάζει πρὸς τὴν τῆς σαρκὸς καθαρότητα, πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὃς διὰ πνεύματος αἰωνίου ἑαυτὸν προσήνεγκεν ἄμωμον τῷ θεῷ, καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησιν ὑμῶν ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων, εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν θεῷ ζῶντι;

Gospel Reading

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt
The Reading is from Mark 10:32-45

At that time, Jesus took his twelve disciples, and he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

The Generous Soul

For too many of us, Lent is a season of doom and gloom, a time to feel bad about all the ways we are not “measuring up” in our spiritual lives. But this view could not be further from the truth. Lent is a season of refreshment and love, of awakening and rebirth. In fact, the word “lent” comes from the Old English word, “lencten,” which means spring. Lent is intended to be springtime for us in our spiritual lives where all can become new again.

St. Paul tells us, “Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. And all this is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ.” The Gospel Reading, too, is filled with this theme of awakening and the extravagant, life-changing love that the Father has for each one of us; it is the well-known parable of the Prodigal Son.

We are all familiar with this amazing story — the younger son who has the audacity to ask his dad for his inheritance early, only to squander it sinfully away. It makes us bristle instinctively at his nerve when we read it. But isn’t that exactly what we do when we selfishly turn away from God (in big or small ways) in our own lives? We squander away the inheritance of grace He has given us.

In desperation from the mess he had made of his life, the son finally “comes to his senses”—awakening to the truth that he is a beloved son of a loving and merciful father and decides to return home. His contrition is faltering and imperfect and seems motivated in large part by his growling stomach.

But it was enough for the loving father. “While still a long way off, the father caught sight of him.” The son was still a long way off from a deep understanding of what he had lost and what he was about to gain. But that small and imperfect openness to the father’s love was enough. In fact, the father is “filled with compassion for him” and immediately sets about preparing a feast and fine clothes for this son. What an extravagance of love! What a beautiful picture Jesus gives us of our Father’s love and mercy.

Oh, how this should fill us with gratitude for such a Father! Be refreshed in this love. We are new creations thanks to this reconciling love.

And what comfort this passage gives to those of us who watch with sorrowful hearts for a return to faith for own “prodigal” loved ones. Our Father is watching and waiting for their return to Him even more eagerly and patiently than we are.

We owe God everything! But let’s start by giving him one little thing. Take even a faltering step closer to Him — go to confession, call a family member or friend you are at odds with and try to reconcile. With just the tiniest bit of spiritual “spring cleaning,” we can be sure we will be swept up in our Father’s loving embrace and find ourselves feasting in His presence.

That is what lent is all about.

Mathew 25 Ministry News

Thank you!

Matthew 25 would like to express our thanks to all of you who donated to the pantry this month.
We delivered some of the Lenten bags along with eggs and other non-perishable items on Tuesday. The pantry was delighted with the goods they received from our church so far. We are always excited to deliver what our parish provides, and hope you will continue to donate outside of Lent. If you haven’t picked up a Lenten bag, it’s not too late. They are located in a basket near the front office. Fill it up, and we will gladly deliver it to Seeds of Hope on April 30th. . If a bag seems too heavy, bring in what you have and start with a new bag.
We are so pleased with this year’s participation in our 40 days of Lent service project. Thank you.
Kali Anastasi!

Thank You from PTO

The P.T.O. would like to thank all those who came out bright and early (in the chill) to support our first annual Spring Fling Community Yard Sale.

We ended up with a beautiful day and some very satisfied customers along with vendors. We would like to thank the youth that came out and worked the set-up, clean-up, and snack bar. It takes many hands to put a fundraiser together and we were so pleased with the outcome. We would like to give Corfu Pizza a big thank you for their generous donation of pizza they delivered for our snack bar.

If you didn’t make it out this year, start collecting your unwanted household items. We hope to set another date for next spring. Don’t forget that “somebody’s junk is another’s treasure. We look forward to making this an annual event.

From the Desk of Our Parish Council President

April is National Volunteer Month

In the United States, volunteerism is instilled at a young age.  In many parts of the country, it is the cornerstone of summer vacation or woven into after-school programs.  Most organizations in small towns, rural counties and the largest cities would not function without volunteers.  In some families, the baton of volunteerism is handed down generation after generation.

Rural fire and ambulance departments remain staffed due to the efforts of volunteers.  The underprivileged receive much needed medical care thanks to volunteers.  Long overdue repairs and upgrades are made to a senior women’s home thanks to an organization’s annual call for donations and skilled workers.  A woman answers a call on a suicide hotline because she cared enough to give up a few hours to train and listen to someone desperate and alone.  A team sets up tables at a soup kitchen every week.  Another group delivers meals to men and women who can no longer cook for themselves.  Boys and girls sell ice cream sandwiches during a fair to raise money for a homeless shelter.

Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes.  They pick a cause and make a difference in someone’s life.  Sometimes the difference is a drop in the bucket.  Other times it creates a tidal wave of change.

At the Church of the Annunciation/Evangelismos in Elkins Park, we would not be able to survive without the dedication of our many, many volunteers.  People who prepare the meals and pastries for the OPA Festival, deliver to a local food pantry to feed those less fortunate, clean, prune and weed our grounds, engage in the lives of our youth, mend and clean altar vestments and cloths - all of our volunteers are special to us!

Throughout this month, we will highlight just a sample of our many volunteers in our weekly bulletins and emails.  Take a moment to thank them for all they do for our church.  Volunteer yourself!  Our volunteers will tell you it is a rewarding experience.  You don’t have to have a ton of time.  Do you have a special talent or skill that may benefit us?  Offer your services or just ask how you can be of help.  OPA is right around the corner, and preparations are underway.  Volunteer your time and your talent!

50th Anniversary Campaign Update

A Master Plan for Our Facilities

A few weeks ago I wrote about the infrastructure needs of our Church and mentioned that we would be hiring an architectural firm to develop a Master Plan for the facility.  In the past few weeks, we have been getting proposals from firms and interviewing the finalists.  In the next few weeks, we will select one and initiate the work.

The master planning process is best with input from a wide range of people in the community and there will be several ways you can be involved.  First, the architects will be interviewing all the ministries and organizations to understand how they use the facility today and what needs they have for the future.  These interviews will occur after Pascha and will be scheduled through the Church office.  Second, we will hold a design workshop on a Saturday after the OPA festival where Parishioners will work in teams with the architects to develop specific design ideas.

Our goal is to have a completed Master Plan in July that includes designs that address the needs of the Church, along with construction budget estimates and options for how the work can be completed.  The Master Plan should answer the key questions of how we address access to the Hall, where we put an elevator, how much all the projects should cost and how to go about doing them.

The master planning process is a great opportunity for you to have direct involvement in planning the future of our Church facilities.  I encourage you and your families to participate.  We will publish in the next few weeks dates for the interviews and workshop.  Please join us in these sessions and help us design the facilities of our future!

Thank you for your support in building the future of our Church!
