Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Third Mode. Psalm 46.6,1.
Sing praises to our God, sing praises.
Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19.

Brethren, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother.

Third Mode.

Gospel Reading

5th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 16:19-31

The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

5th Sunday of Luke

Wisdom of the Fathers

By these words it is surely shown that in his [the rich man] daily feasting he had frequently sinned by his tongue, seeing that, while burning all over, he demanded to be cooled especially in his tongue. Again, that levity of conduct follows closely upon gluttony sacred authority testifies ... For the most part also edacity leads us even to lechery, because, when the belly is distended by repletion, the stings of lust are excited.
St. Gregory the Dialogist
The Book of Pastoral Rule, Chapter XIX, 6th century

The man who has once chosen pleasure in this life, and has not cured his inconsiderateness by repentance, places the land of the good beyond his own reach; for he has dug against himself the yawning impassable abyss of a necessity that nothing can break through.
St. Gregory of Nyssa

Philoptochos Report  to the General Assembly

Welcome!

My name is Stella Fisfis and I am the president of Philoptochos.
We are, and always have been, a philanthropic women’s organization that feeds, clothes, cooks, and loves those in need.

2019 has been a success in so many ways and is a testament to our members and our leadership.
We have so much to build on in 2020 and I would like to outline the great outreach we performed in 2019 and lay out some of our plans for the year ahead.

To recap some of the philanthropic outreach that we performed in 2019:

  • We purchased jackets for Stetson School students.
  • Prepared meals for families staying at the Ronald McDonald house.
  • Covered parts of the funeral expenses for OCMC Bishop Akunda.
  • Sent funds to support the Christian prison mission.
  • Prepared about 5,000 meals for the Race Against Hunger program.

In addition, Philoptochos also helped members of our parish and the local community. Some of the services that we provided this year:

  • We provided funds to aid a priest’s family that was in need.
  • Purchased schoolbooks & bus fare for a student.
  • Bought specially made shoes that aided a man in his struggle to walk.
  • Provided medicine for parishioners who could not afford it. The list goes on from there…

Looking forward, we expect to introduce a few new missions to further our impact in the community and develop our bond as a group:

  1. We hope to prepare and deliver home-cooked meals for the families in our community who are going through hard times.
  2. We have rolled out a new committee called Parea. The goal of Parea is to deepen the bond we have with each other as a group. We will look to organize outings to shows, dinners, and local events.

It is important for the community to feel our bond as a unit of charitable women and we encourage ALL members of Philoptochos to be as active as their schedules permit. We want all members to have an impact on our many ventures, not just board members.

The strength and foundation of Philoptochos are found in the women that have been selflessly serving as members for generations. Without each of you and your financial support, so many people would have nowhere to go when they need it most.

Thank you!

50th Anniversary Campaign Update

50_ann_logo

Dear Annunciation Parishioners,

In 2017 the Parish Council moved to address both urgent facilities issues and to start planning for other facilities improvements that are needed in our 50-year old facilities.  In late 2017 and early 2018, we completed the replacement of roofs over the offices and half the classrooms.  In 2018 we replaced the heating and air conditioning systems.  In 2018 we also initiated the 50th Anniversary Campaign with the theme Honoring Our Past and Building Our Future in order to provide the necessary funds.  To date, we have received pledges for over $900,000 which paid for the roof work and will pay off the loan taken to execute the heating and air conditioning project.  We also established the Annunciation/Evangelismos Endowment Fund to provide perpetual financial support to the Community.

In 2019, the General Assembly approved the hiring of an architectural firm to prepare a Facilities Master Plan assessing and organizing needs for the future and recommending a course of action.  The purpose of a Master Plan is to identify the critical needs and integrate them into a complete design to ensure that addressing one need does not prevent the addressing of another.  As input to the plan we outlined priorities as 1) Improving accessibility by adding an elevator to the Social Hall, 2) Updating and making accessible the bathrooms, 3) Improving classrooms and 4) Updating the Social Hall and Kitchen.  The Master Planning process occurred from May to September and included interviews with many organizations and individuals, a design workshop in June attended by roughly 35 people, and preparation of cost estimates.

We now have the Master Plan report to share with the Community.  The report summarizes the critical needs, identifies recommended solutions, provides cost estimates and a suggested phased implementation plan.  Two things are important to understand about the report and the conceptual designs:

  • Τhe Plan addresses the projected needs of the Community and facility for the next 20 to 30 years.  Given that the facility is 50 years old, there are many parts of the facility that need to be upgraded to provide adequate service into the future.  These are included in the plan.
  • The Plan has what are known as conceptual level designs, meaning that the design work shows how the needs can be addressed in one design and how these elements all fit together.  The designs are not completed to the point they can be used to obtain construction bids or building permits.  There is still engineering and design work needed that can change the final arrangements and sizes of rooms, as well as other details and of course the cost estimates.

In developing the Master Plan the architects evaluated many possible alternatives in coming to a recommended solution along with an alternative that is larger in scope.  In summary:

  • The recommended Option A includes a new lobby area in the courtyard, an elevator that serves all levels, new accessible bathrooms both upstairs and downstairs, a new kitchen located under the new lobby, and updated classrooms and Social Hall.  The estimated cost of the option is approximately $4 million.
  • The alternative Option B includes many of the same elements as Option A but also includes a new Social Hall in the space of the current courtyard, new classrooms relocated to the current Social Hall space, addition of office and meeting room space. The estimated cost of this option is approximately $5 million.

It is important that the Community has sufficient opportunity and time to understand the Master Plan and conceptual designs.  We will present the plan and answer questions in the following ways over the next 2 months:

  • We will have 2 formal presentations, one on a Sunday after Liturgy and one on a weeknight evening where we will present the plans in detail and answer questions.  Dates will be announced shortly.
  • We will have a table set up in the Social Hall after Liturgy for the next several weeks where you can see the plans and ask questions.
  • We will also have a table set up in the Hall on several Tuesday nights during Greek School classes as many Parishioners are at the Church at this time.

Creating a comprehensive Master Plan is a significant achievement towards Building Our Future.  As a next step, it is important that the entire Community understand the Plan and provides feedback and comments to help determine how we proceed.  Please participate in one of the sessions above or reach out directly to me to understand the Plan and provide your thoughts.  As always, thank you for your support and patience while we take these steps to create a bright future for our Community.

Prayerfully yours,

Dean Dalson

50th Anniversary Chairperson
