Past Bulletins

From Our Parish Council President

Dear family and friends of Annunciation Elkins Park,

Father John and I are writing this third health update regarding the impact the “CoronaVirus” (COVID-19), now a Pandemic, is having on our church’s scheduled activities in particular, and what our response is.

First, let me say that we hope you now know at this point how important your health and safety, and that of our entire Church family and our surrounding local communities, are to us as the leaders of your Annunciation. Second, and once again, the need to be calm, thoughtful, and cautious in how we approach decisions related to church activities cannot be overstated.

However, if you are sick or have a chronic illness that puts you into a high-risk category, please stay home to protect yourself and others. If  you need to remain at home, for this reason, you can still participate in Sunday Church Services via the internet from the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York at 10:00 AM Sundays at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/c/ArchdiocesanCathedraloftheHolyTrinity/live

Here are updates on specific upcoming church activities, effective immediately:

Sights and Sounds, scheduled for Saturday, March 14 has been postponed. Our children have put in a lot of wonderful effort, but this type of large activity bringing together families from across the entire Delaware Valley region would put too many people at risk if there was someone there exposed to the virus.

  • Greek School and Sunday School are canceled for the next two weeks. This includes Tuesday classes, Friday classes, and adult classes.
  • The Young at Heart luncheon scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, is canceled.
  • The Greek School program to celebrate the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and Greek Independence will be rescheduled for a later date to be determined. Our children and teachers have been working hard to put together an excellent program, and we owe it to them to recognize their talents. However, just like Sights & Sounds, this type of large gathering is not prudent at this time.
  • Matthew 25 donations to Seeds of Hope will continue. You can bring donations of packaged food to the church, and we will continue to deliver these to the Seeds of Hope pantry in a safe manner and in compliance with their current plans as this service will be even more critical during this time.
  • All church services will continue as scheduled. Please refer to Father John’s email directive entitled “CoronaVirus Update #2”, which included best precautionary practices from the CDC, the WHO, and our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

In general, please remember to take the following actions yourself to help prevent getting and transmitting the virus:

  • Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds with warm, soapy water.
  • Minimize unnecessary travel, especially if you are elderly or have other underlying health issues.
  • Stay at home if you have been exposed to the virus, are generally sick, have a fever, or are caring for someone who is ill.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a single-use tissue.
  • Maintain a 6-foot distance from others.
  • Sanitize surfaces in your home using commercially available cleaning/sanitizing products or diluted bleach solutions.

Finally, at church, we have placed a hand sanitizing station in the Narthex. We have implemented a daily sanitizing schedule that includes all desks, tables, countertops, doorknobs, icons, and other contact surfaces before and after activities and services.

We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves and will provide updates about activities scheduled beyond March 22 as we get closer to those dates. We ask that everyone take common-sense measures to help prevent the transmission of the virus, and we pray for everyone’s health and safety.

Sincerely,

Dean Dalson

President of Parish Council

Saints and Feasts

March 15

Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas

This divine Father, who was from Asia Minor, was from childhood reared in the royal court of Constantinople, where he was instructed in both religious and secular wisdom. Later, while still a youth, he left the imperial court and struggled in asceticism on Mount Athos, and in the Skete at Beroea. He spent some time in Thessalonica being treated for an illness that came from his harsh manner of life. He was present in Constantinople at the Council that was convened in 1341 against Barlaam of Calabria, and at the Council of 1347 against Acindynus, who was of like mind with Barlaam; Barlaam and Acindynus claimed that the grace of God is created. At both these Councils, the Saint contended courageously for the true dogmas of the Church of Christ, teaching in particular that divine grace is not created, but is the uncreated energies of God which are poured forth throughout creation: otherwise it would be impossible, if grace were created, for man to have genuine communion with the uncreated God. In 1347 he was appointed Metropolitan of Thessalonica. He tended his flock in an apostolic manner for some twelve years, and wrote many books and treatises on the most exalted doctrines of our Faith; and having lived for a total of sixty-three years, he reposed in the Lord in 1359.

His holy relics are kept in the Cathedral of Thessalonica. A full service was composed for his feast day by the Patriarch Philotheus in 1368, when it was established that his feast be celebrated on this day. Since works without right faith avail nothing, we set Orthodoxy of faith as the foundation of all that we accomplish during the Fast, by celebrating the Triumph of Orthodoxy the Sunday before, and the great defender of the teachings of the holy Fathers today.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 1:10-14; 2:1-3.

"IN THE BEGINNING, Thou, Lord, didst found the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of thy hands; they will perish, but thou remainest; they will all grow old like a garment, like a mantle thou wilt roll them up, and they will be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years will never end." But to what angel has he ever said, "Sit at my right hand, till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet?" Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?

Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him.

Προκείμενον. Plagal Second Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas
The Reading is from Mark 2:1-12

At that time, Jesus entered Capernaum and it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak thus? It is a blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your pallet and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins"-he said to the paralytic-"I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home." And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

Wisdom of the Fathers

Now Matthew indeed saith, that "they brought him," but the others, that they also broke up the roof, and let him down. And they put the sick man before Christ, saying nothing, but committing the whole to Him.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 29 on Matthew 9, 1. B#54, pp. 195, 196, 4th Century

Take up your bed. Carry the very mat that once carried you. Change places, so that what was the proof of your sickness may now give testimony to your soundness. Your bed of pain becomes the sign of healing, its very weight the measure of the strength that has been restored to you.
St. Peter Chrysologus
Homily 50.6. Taken from: Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. Vol. 2: Mark. Downers Grove: Intervarsity Press, 2005, p. 27.

2020 Great Lent Resources

Akathist

Guide to Lenten Weekday Services

Great Compline / Απόδειπνο

  • Five consecutive Mondays starting March  2, at 6 pm.

Great Compline is prayed in monasteries daily before one retires for sleep. It is prayed in our churches during the Great Lent. This 45 minute-long service consists mostly of Psalm readings and prayers. It ends with the very powerful hymn, "Lord of the Powers, be with us" The service allows us an opportunity to pray and reflect, seek God's mercy and forgiveness, and to acknowledge that all our hopes and salvation must be placed in God's hands.

Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts / Λειτουργία των Προηγιασμέμων Δώρων

  • Five consecutive Wednesdays starting March 4 and alternating 6 pm, and 9 am every other week.

Since the Divine Liturgy is a festive and joyous celebration, it is not celebrated on weekdays during Lent, except on the Saturdays of the Souls and the Feast of the Annunciation. However, because Lent is a period of fasting, it should also be a period of more frequent reception of Holy Communion. There is no consecration of the Gifts at this Liturgy (hence the name Pre-sanctified). They have been consecrated on the preceding Sunday at a regular Divine Liturgy. It lasts just over an hour and contains the service of the Ninth Hour and the Vespers, with Holy Communion added at the end. Those who choose to keep the entire fast are encouraged to attend this service and to receive Holy Communion as a way of sustaining the fast by receiving the Body and Blood of Christ even more frequently during this period of spiritual discipline.

The Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God / Ο Ακάθιστος Υμνος εις την Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο

  • Five consecutive Fridays starting March 6, at 6:30 pm.

This service consists of hymns and prayers addressed to Christ and the Theotokos. It is a beautiful poem of praise and devotion to the Mother of our Lord. It was sung in the year 626 in the Church of the Theotokos in Constantinople on the occasion of the deliverance and freedom of the City from the barbarians. It is comprised of 24 stanzas, each beginning with a letter of the Greek alphabet from Alpha to Omega. It is divided into four parts, one part sung on each of the Fridays of Lent (Salutations), and on the fifth Friday, the hymn is sung in its entirety. It is called "Akathist" because the people, out of love, devotion, and gratefulness to the Theotokos, stood during the entire hymn.

Sunday School News

Dear Sunday School Families,

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Christians have been sharing the Faith with others for nearly 2000 years. They have offered a living witness to the love, hope, and salvation of Jesus Christ to people everywhere and even to those who live in the most remote corners of the world. Some of those who dedicated their lives to this important work are recognized as great saints in the Church. Even today there are people who are hard at work sharing Christ with the world. Not just priests or monks, these people may stand next to you every Sunday during Liturgy.

On March 1st - Mission Sunday, we will be distributing the OCMC coin boxes to all Sunday School students. Funds raised through the Mission coin boxes will help the OCMC fulfill Christ's teaching to "make disciples of all nations". Students will bring their coin boxes home and are asked to place spare coins in their boxes each day, and pray for their brothers and sisters serving Christ's Church around the world in mission countries.  Please consider "seeding" your child's box, placing money in the box to get it started. Students should return their coin boxes to any of the Sunday School teachers at church by Holy Friday.

Pray, Fast, Do Good, Learn - Great Lent is a time to work on developing these four basic disciplines of Christian living. We pray that you will help your child participate in the Mission Coin Box Program this Lenten season.

In Christ's Service,

The Sunday School Teachers

Philoptochos News & Events

National Philoptochos Telephone Caregiver Support Group

The National Philoptochos Department of Social Services is mounting a "Telephone Caregiver Support Group" beginning at the end of February specifically for Orthodox Christians who are caring for a loved one who is elderly or suffers from a chronic or life-threatening illness, or who is disabled.  We are fully aware that many organizations sponsor caregiver support groups; however, ours is faith-based and thus, unique.  It will incorporate and recognize our community's cultural characteristics, attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs that can influence how caregivers address the challenges they face.

For seven consecutive Thursday evenings from February 27 to April 9, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm, EST, we will "meet" over the telephone, thus allowing caregivers throughout the Archdiocese to participate.

Please click HERE for details and how to register to attend.

Matthew 25 Outreach

The Time Has Come! 40 Day Lenten Project

Monday, March 2nd is the first day of our lenten spiritual journey to Pascha. As Archbishop Elpidophoros stated in his Meatfare Sunday homily*, “We are called to think about how we treat our fellow human beings, how we respond to their needs and their cries for help, because how we treat them, reveals what grace and identity with Christ are inside of us.” We are given many opportunities during this season to pray, worship, gain insight into our own behaviors, and intensify our efforts to serve the needs of others.

With this in mind, we ask you to consider selecting non-perishable food items from your home pantry or local grocery store and putting them into the bag that we have provided to you over the 40 days of Great Lent. You can place your lovingly filled bag into one of the bins labeled Matthew 25 in the church hall. These goods will be delivered to the Seeds of Hope Food Pantry.

Food items to be collected can be anything from a box of pasta, a jar of pasta sauce, a container of peanut butter or jelly, a package of flour or sugar, or as simple as a can of soup, vegetables, beans, or tuna or a bag of dried beans, a package of crackers, a granola bar, etc.

If you are more comfortable purchasing in bulk from warehouses, feel free to donate food items that way. It is up to you to choose how and what you would like to share. Any non-perishable food item is welcome as long as it is commercially pre-packaged and individually wrapped.

Collect any amount that you are comfortable donating. All donations are happily accepted no matter how big or small. Items can be delivered to the bins at church at any time during Great Lent. Matthew 25 will be delivering your items to Seeds of Hope on the following dates during Great Lent: March 16 and April 8. We will also be delivering on April 22, after Pascha. Please reach out to the Matthew 25 Ministry for additional bags, if needed.

A big THANK YOU to all in advance for your participation and donations.
