COVID-19 Pandemic Update

April 2, 2020 Update

Hello Everyone,

I pray that you and your families are healthy and safe.  You should have received in the postal mail by now the Easter mailing, including the schedule of services as well as a letter from Father John and myself describing our situation.  I want to provide a quick update on what we are doing during the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis.

First, I want to thank Father John, George Dalagelis, Vasili Karras, Paul Fisfis, and Mitch Papakirk for their efforts to continue holding services and making them available 'live' on our Facebook Page for the parish to worship and participate in the Lenten services.  We generally have 70-80 people logged into the services, and quite a few are Annunciation family members who no longer live in this area.  It is very heartwarming to see the comments and people responding with “Kyrie Eleison” during the service.  Please help spread the word that services are available so that more people know and participate.

As the weather gets nicer, I am sure that many families find the requirement to stay at home and limit trips and contact with others to be a more difficult thing.  However, this is the best way to minimize the spread of the virus and keep yourself, your family, and the community at large as safe as possible.  Father John has also been providing a wide range of materials that are available over the internet to help everyone with their worship while staying at home.

Second, we continue to move forward with new ways to participate and enable activities to occur on a virtual basis.  Although you can’t come to the church for services, we have provided a way for you to light a votive candle that will be placed on the solea for you. You can request a candle HERE.  We are adding a Zoom videoconference account so that we all have the ability to worship, study, and hold meetings and interact with each other.  We already have a conference call number and will add more numbers.  The office will help coordinate the scheduling of these tools, so they are available to all the church ministries and groups.  I encourage all groups to be imaginative in using these tools to bring people together.  I know that Stacy Lagakos, our choir director, is providing recordings of music to the choir so they can continue to practice and sing along with the service from their homes – “Karaoke Choir!”  This is an excellent example of keeping our worship and ministries despite the current hardships and restrictions.  We have also implemented a new system for on-line contributions, GivePlus+, where you can make contributions over the church’s website or through your phone.  There are options for making donations to the church generally as well as to Philoptochos and PTO directly.  While many are already directly suffering the economic effects of the crisis, we ask you to please keep in mind the church and support it as you are best able.

Third, we continue to control expenses and address the financial shortfall caused by the coronavirus crisis, and to plan for the future.  This week we applied for a relief loan as made available by the US government under the CARES Act.  This loan will most likely be forgiven in its entirety.  While it is not a large amount, it will help to cover some of our expenses for the next few months.  Also, over the next week, there will be several meetings to plan the next steps related to planning for next year, budgeting, and yes, planning an OPA festival for this coming fall.

Again, please stay safe and follow all the recommendations to stay home, limit travel, wash your hands, don’t touch your face, etc.  It’s for everyone’s health and safety, especially the doctors, nurses, other health care workers, and people who provide other critical services to the general public or who are at high risk.

Με προσευχές και τις καλύτερες ευχές  για το υπόλοιπο της  Σαρακοστής και την Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα και τη συνεχή υγεία και ασφάλεια των ενοριτών μας,

Prayerfully yours,

Dean Dalson

President, Parish Council

Monk-Martyrs Claudius, Diodore, Victor, Victorinus, and those with them

Of these Martyrs, Saint Claudius died when his arms and legs were severed; Saint Diodore was burned alive; Saints Victor, Victorinus, and Nicephorus were crushed to death by a large boulder; Saint Serapion was burned alive; Saint Pappias was cast into the sea. According to some accounts, they contested in Corinth under Decius in 251; according to others, in Diospolis in Egypt under Numerian in 284.

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on April 1, where her life is recorded. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed.

Mary of Egypt

When Mary was only twelve years old, she left her parents and departed to Alexandria, where she lived a depraved life for seventeen years. Then, moved by curiosity, she went with many pilgrims to Jerusalem, that she might see the Exaltation of the venerable Cross. Even in the Holy City she gave herself over to every kind of licentiousness and drew many into the depth of perdition. Desiring to go into the church on the day of the Exaltation of the Cross, time and again she perceived a certain invisible power preventing her entrance, whereas the multitude of people about her entered unhindered. Therefore, wounded in heart by this, she decided to change her way of life and reconcile herself to God by means of repentance. Invoking our Lady the Theotokos as her protectress, she asked her to open the way for her to worship the Cross, and vowed that she would renounce the world. And thus, returning once again to the church, she entered easily. When she had worshipped the precious Wood, she departed that same day from Jerusalem and passed over the Jordan. She went into the inner wilderness and for forty-seven years lived a most harsh manner of life, surpassing human strength; alone, she prayed to God alone. Toward the end of her life, she met a certain hermit named Zosimas, and she related to him her life from the beginning. She requested of him to bring her the immaculate Mysteries that she might partake of them. According to her request, he did this the following year on Holy and Great Thursday. One year after this, Zosimas again went thither and found her dead, laid upon the ground, and letters written in the sand near her which said: "Abba Zosimas, bury here the body of wretched Mary. I died on the very day I partook of the immaculate Mysteries. Pray for me." Her death is reckoned by some to have taken place in 378, by some, in 437, and by others, in 522. She is commemorated also on the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent. Her life was recorded by Saint Sophronius of Jerusalem.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-14.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Προκείμενον. First Mode.

Ἀδελφοί, Χριστὸς δὲ παραγενόμενος ἀρχιερεὺς τῶν μελλόντων ἀγαθῶν, διὰ τῆς μείζονος καὶ τελειοτέρας σκηνῆς, οὐ χειροποιήτου, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν, οὐ ταύτης τῆς κτίσεως, οὐδὲ διʼ αἵματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων, διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος εἰσῆλθεν ἐφάπαξ εἰς τὰ ἅγια, αἰωνίαν λύτρωσιν εὑράμενος. Εἰ γὰρ τὸ αἷμα ταύρων καὶ τράγων, καὶ σποδὸς δαμάλεως ῥαντίζουσα τοὺς κεκοινωμένους, ἁγιάζει πρὸς τὴν τῆς σαρκὸς καθαρότητα, πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὃς διὰ πνεύματος αἰωνίου ἑαυτὸν προσήνεγκεν ἄμωμον τῷ θεῷ, καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησιν ὑμῶν ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων, εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν θεῷ ζῶντι;

Gospel Reading

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt
The Reading is from Mark 10:32-45

At that time, Jesus took his twelve disciples, and he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Wisdom of the Fathers

But let no man be troubled at the apostles being in such an imperfect state. For not yet was the cross accomplished, not yet the grace of the Spirit given. But if thou wouldest learn their virtue, notice them after these things, and thou wilt see them superior to every passion.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 65 on Matthew 20, 2,3,4,6. B#54, pp.399-401,403., 4th Century

Light a Votive Candle at Annunciation Church in Elkins Park

Beloved Parishioners,

As all of you are well aware by now, our church building has been closed to the public as directed by the public health officials and our Church's Hierarchs. We continue to offer a full liturgical schedule with only the priest, cantor, sexton, and a couple of other helpers at the invitation of the priest. We invite you, our beloved parishioners, to pray together with us from your home through our live-stream on our Facebook page.

We know how much you miss coming to church, especially during this time of Great Lent and Holy Week-Pascha. As a small symbol of staying connected and being present here in spirit, we would be glad to light an 8-day red votive candle on your behalf here at Annunciation Church and place it on the solea in front of the iconostasis as a visible message of hope and symbol of the light of God’s love. Please let us know by filling out the information HERE. You can make a free-will Holy Week-Pascha Donation HERE, or through the new GIVE PLUS+ app on your phone.

In making your donation, we would ask that you please consider the total donations you would normally make as a family during the Lenten season and Holy Week-Pascha in prior years and make a similar donation this year if possible.

“Beloved children in the Lord, may the blessing of the Lord, through the intercessions of the All-Holy Mother of God, accompany us in our journey, transform our voluntary isolation into genuine communion, and become our prayer and destination to appreciate the meaning of this, so that we may return to that which is true, to that which is pleasing to God!

Have courage! And may God be with us!”                      – Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
