Saints and Feasts

Stephen
August 02

Translation of the Relics of Stephen the Protomartyr

After the First Martyr had been stoned to death (see Dec. 27), Gamaliel, his teacher, encouraged certain of the Christians to go by night and take up the Saint's body and bury it in his field, which was at a distance of some twenty miles from Jerusalem and was called by his name, "Kaphar-gamala," that is, "the field of Gamala," where Gamaliel himself was later buried. About the year 427, a certain pious man called Lucian, who was the parish priest of a church near to that field, received from God a revelation in a dream concerning the place where the First Martyr was buried. He immediately made this known to John, the Patriarch of Jerusalem. Thus, coming to the place indicated, and digging there, they found a box with the word "Stephen" in Aramaic letters. On opening it, they took these most sacred relics and transferred them to Jerusalem with great honor and in the company of a very great multitude of the faithful.

Transfiguration
August 06

Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

Our Lord had spoken to His disciples many times not only concerning His Passion, Cross, and Death, but also concerning the coming persecutions and afflictions that they themselves would endure. Since all these evils were near at hand, but the enjoyment of good things which they hoped to receive in their stead was yet to come, our Savior desired to give them full assurance, evidently and openly, concerning that glory which is prepared for those who endure to the end. Therefore, fulfilling that which He had promised shortly before, that "there be some standing here which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in His Kingdom" (Matt. 16:28), He took His three foremost disciples and ascended Mount Tabor, where He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as the light. Suddenly, together with this dread and marvelous effulgence of light, there appeared those pinnacles of the Prophets, Moses and Elias, who spoke with the Lord Jesus concerning His saving Passion which was about to take place. Standing before Him as reverent servants, they showed that He is the Lord of both the living and the dead, for Moses came forth from Hades, having died many centuries before, and Elias, as it were from heaven, whither he had been taken up while yet alive. After a little while a radiant cloud overshadowed them and out of the cloud they heard that same voice which had been heard at the Jordan at the Baptism of Christ, testifying to the Divinity of Jesus and saying: "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well-pleased; hear ye Him" (Matt. 17: 5).

Such are the marvels, truly worthy of God, celebrated in this present feast, which is an image and prefiguring of the future state of the righteous, whose splendor the Lord spoke of, saying: "Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun" (Matt. 13:43). It is because of this that the Kontakion of this Feast is said daily (when there is not a great feast) in the Service of the Typica in perpetual commemoration of the glory that will be the lot of the Saints. According to tradition, the Lord's Transfiguration came to pass forty days before His Crucifixion; this is why the Transfiguration is celebrated forty days before the Exaltation of the Cross.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.

Brethren, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Grave Mode.

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 14:14-22

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

8th Sunday of Matthew

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Mode

Thou didst abolish death by Thy Cross; Thou didst open Paradise to the thief; Thou didst transform the myrrh-bearers' lamentation, and didst bid Thine Apostles to preach that Thou art risen, O Christ God, granting great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Translation of the relics of Stephen in the Fourth Mode

The crown of the Kingdom hath adorned the brow of thy head because of the contests that thou hast endured for Christ God, thou first of the martyred Saints; for when thou hadst censured the Jews' madness, thou sawest Christ thy Saviour standing at the right hand of the Father. O Stephen, ever pray Him for us, that He would save our souls.

The Apolytikion of the Annunciation/Evangelismos in the Fourth Mode

Today is the summary of our salvation, and the revelation of the age-old mystery. For the Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announces the good news of grace. Therefore, let us join him, and cry  aloud to the Theotokos: “Rejoice, Maiden full of grace! The Lord is with you.”

Seasonal Kontakion in the Grave Mode

You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father.

A Letter from Fr. John to Choir Director Stacy Lagakos

Dear Stacy,

It is with mixed feelings that I accept your retirement as our Annunciation’s Director of Music after 5 years of faithful service. I know I speak on behalf of our beloved church when I say you will be greatly missed and that you brought ”leadership and enthusiasm” (Gouris), “professionalism that you encouraged among us” (Connie Bandy), you “furthered the musical abilities” (Teri Douris) of the choir members, you fostered “camaraderie, discipline, and mission among us” (Bill Sandilos), and that “under your leadership, we continually improved and added beautiful and difficult new pieces, thank you for your hard work.” (Dean Dalson).

Stacy, it has been said, “Music is the chariot of theology!”  Indeed, the message of the Apostles, and its very meaning in Greek, is to go out in the world…to reach out to all with the voice of salvation.  The Church teaches that the harmony of the shepherd’s staff with the creativity of an accomplished conductor’s baton writes a beautiful icon of cooperation that exists between melody and the truth found in the Word of God.  It expresses the exaltation of creation’s Eternal Composer!   Stacy, I know that for you music has always been something more than a voice, an ode, or composition as it seeks to both praise and express God.  We all could see that!

In the hands of such faithful directors as you, the spiritual hymns of Orthodoxy are able to lift even the “weightiest” of sheep to the choir loft of heaven.  Thank you! You and Susan will be missed.

In His Service,

+Father John

Homeless Ministry News

While July temperatures soared into the ’90s and real feel temps climbed over 100, we were blessed to witness neighbor helping neighbor. Through a personal contact at Talluto’s pasta, the Homeless Ministry received a generous contribution of over 3,000 pounds of dry and frozen pasta. The Homeless Ministry in turn distributed this pasta to a number of ministries and shelters including Caring for Friends/Philabundance, Project Home, Whosoever Gospel, Why Not Prosper, and Depaul USA. As we made our scheduled stops to deliver the donated food, each ministry in turn contacted other shelters, individuals, and ministries, offering to share the food to others in need. As is often the case we were blessed once again by those we were serving, witnessing not only their gratitude for what they were receiving but also their love of neighbor in sharing whatever they could.

The Homeless Ministry is grateful to Tallutos for their generous contribution. This contribution will provide well over 9,000 meals.

Since we are now in the green phase, the Homeless Ministry is returning to directly serving those experiencing homelessness on the streets in center city Philadelphia. We serve basic foods including sandwiches, fruit, hard-boiled eggs, and water in addition to soup and hot foods in the colder months. We also distribute toiletries, new socks and new underwear gently used clothing and blankets and hats and gloves in the winter.

Hunger does not stop in the heat of the summer or during the cold winter months.

Please contact any one of us if you would like to offer food, clothing, toiletries or join us in serving.

We thank you for your support and ask for your continued prayers.

Join us in faith and love and let us Glorify God together!

In Christ's service,

The Homeless Ministry
