Message from Parish Council President

Church Reopening Update from Parish Council President Dean Dalson

Dear Annunciation Community,

As we start the new Ecclesiastical Year, we are making changes to allow a limited number of in-person activities.

Our priority remains to provide a place to worship for our community safely and balancing that with a desire to get back to a more normal level of in-person interaction.  I want to thank the community for everyone’s cooperation with the guidelines that we have been using so far, for the community’s continued support of all Ministries and Outreach during this Pandemic, and the community’s stewardship support.  With your continued cooperation and support, we are making the following changes, consistent with Pennsylvania public health guidelines and with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos:

  • We are making the social hall available for divine liturgy to increase our registration capacity every Sunday.  This adds 25 seats that are socially distanced, and the liturgy is broadcast live on a large screen.  You must register on the church’s website as always, and all seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis.
  • We are allowing in-person Ministry meetings at the church facilities under the following guidelines:
    • Maximum in-person attendance is 25 people; everyone must wear a mask and social distance from each other.
    • Meetings are allowed only in the social hall, and the church proper, the heating and air conditioning systems must be turned on for proper ventilation. Gatherings are not allowed in the library or classrooms.
    • You must maintain a log of attendees and check their temperature on arrival.
    • Audio conference or video conference options must be available for anyone who is part of a higher risk group or is not comfortable with an in-person meeting.
    • Meetings must be scheduled in advance with George Dalagelis in the church office. He will provide the logs and infrared thermometer, and these must be returned to George after the meeting.
  • We are allowing limited Youth Ministry meetings and activities under the following guidelines:
    • For indoor meetings at the church, the above guidelines apply.  The 25 person limit is total attendance, including children and parents.
    • For outdoor Ministry or Youth meetings, whether at the church or another location, the Pennsylvania guidelines are for a maximum of 250 people.
    • Everyone must wear a mask and socially distance from each other.
    • You must maintain a log of attendees and check their temperature on arrival.
    • Hand sanitizers must be available.
    • Meetings must be scheduled in advance with George Dalagelis in the Church office. He will provide the logs and infrared thermometer, and these must be returned to George after the meeting.
  • After liturgy on Sundays, we will provide a limited “Coffee to Go” service.
    • This will be outside in the courtyard and will be weather permitting.  In the case of bad weather, we will not have coffee service.
    • People must continue to wear masks when not drinking their coffee and must socially distance.
    • Food is not provided.  In the case of Memorial services, the koliva, Metaxa, and a small individually wrapped treat may be provided by the family.

We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our guidelines as needed to ensure the safety of the community.  Thank you again for your continued cooperation.

Prayerfully,

Dean Dalson

Parish Council President

The Consecration of the Church of the Holy Resurrection (Holy Sepulchre)

The church that is honoured far above all others is that of the Holy Resurrection, which Saint Constantine the Great constructed at the place of Golgotha, where our Saviour was crucified and buried. For a long time this place had been purposely buried beneath the earth by the Jews and heathen; furthermore, during the reign of Hadrian (117-138), a temple dedicated to Aphrodite was built over the site so that this sacred place might be even further desecrated and fall into utter oblivion. It was here that the Cross was hidden. However, at the command of the pious Emperor Constantine, excavations were made and the tokens of the saving Passion were found. It was here, then, that the very great and magnificent temple named in honour of Christ God's Resurrection-the Anastasis-was built under the supervision of the blessed Helen, while Dracilian was Eparch of Palestine and Macarius was Archbishop of Jerusalem. It was the latter, also, who exalted the venerable Cross and performed the consecration of this temple in the year 336.

The Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross

Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, when she was already advanced in years, undertook, in her great piety, the hardships of a journey to Jerusalem in search of the cross, about the year 325. A temple to Aphrodite had been raised up by the Emperor Hadrian upon Golgotha, to defile and cover with oblivion the place where the saving Passion had been suffered. The venerable Helen had the statue of Aphrodite destroyed, and the earth removed, revealing the Tomb of our Lord, and three crosses. Of these, it was believed that one must be that of our Lord, the other two of the thieves crucified with Him; but Saint Helen was at a loss which one might be the Wood of our salvation. At the inspiration of Saint Macarius, Archbishop of Jerusalem, a lady of Jerusalem, who was already at the point of death from a certain disease, was brought to touch the crosses, and as soon as she came near to the Cross of our Lord, she was made perfectly whole. Consequently, the precious Cross was lifted on high by Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem; as he stood on the ambo, and when the people beheld it, they cried out, "Lord have mercy." It should be noted that after its discovery, a portion of the venerable Cross was taken to Constantinople as a blessing. The rest was left in Jerusalem in the magnificent church built by Saint Helen, until the year 614. At that time, the Persians plundered Palestine and took the Cross to their own country (see Jan. 22, Saint Anastasius the Persian). Late, in the year 628, Emperor Heraclius set out on a military campaign, retrieved the Cross, and after bringing it to Constantinople, himself escorted it back to Jerusalem, where he restored it to its place.

Rest from labour. A Fast is observed today, whatever day of the week it may be.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18.

Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

Plagal Second Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday before Holy Cross
The Reading is from John 3:13-17

The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

Sunday before Holy Cross

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal First Mode

Let us worship the Word, O ye faithful, praising Him that with the Father and the Spirit is co-beginningless God, Who was born of a pure Virgin that we all be saved; for He was pleased to mount the Cross in the flesh that He assumed, accepting thus to endure death. And by His glorious rising, He also willed to resurrect the dead.

Apolytikion for Forefeast of the Exaltation in the Second Mode

We offer Thee in mediation the life-giving Cross which, of Thy goodness, Thou hast given unto us, the unworthy, O Lord. Save Thy hierarchs and Thy flock, and grant Thou peace through the Theotokos, O only friend of man.

Apolytikion for Temple of the Resurrection in the Fourth Mode

Thou hast shown the earthly beauty of the holy tabernacle of Thy glory to be like unto the splendour of the heavenly firmament, O Lord. Strengthen it for ever and ever, and accept our prayers which we unceasingly offer therein unto Thee, through the Theotokos, O Thou Who art the Life and Resurrection of all.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

The Church is shown to be a many-lighted heaven that doth shine a guiding light upon all them that do believe; wherein while standing we cry aloud: Do Thou Thyself now establish this house, O Lord.

Matthew 25 Ministry News

Matthew 25 is Reaching Out to Lend a Hand… Will You?

We hope that everyone had a nice summer and ready for the new ecclesiastical year.  So much has changed…yet so little has changed since we were first impacted by COVID in the spring.

Schools have resumed in a virtual format for most, jobs may or may not be in person, and worship is open, but still virtual for many.  Everywhere we go, we struggle to identify a familiar face with our masks on.  This is our current state of normal.  Sadly, with these new realities, the platform that Matthew 25 works so hard for continues to plaque our local communities.  Food insecurities have grown, and with them, the pantries and other food assistance programs are overwhelmed!  Virtual learning means that many families can’t get to the school to pick up free breakfast and lunches for their children.  Many families are still hanging by a thread with furloughed jobs or no job in site.  Elderly people are afraid to go out or their monthly check no longer covers the cost of rising groceries.

Let’s continue to work together to be a community of helping hands.  Lets reach out and try to fill the empty shelves at the pantry.  We can do this by purchasing non -perishables like soup, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, peanut butter, and oatmeal to name a few items.  We will gladly purchase for you if you prefer to make a monetary donation.

We will be making our monthly donation to Seeds of Hope on September 15th.  We will continue to safely deliver to the pantry individually.  The pantry will continue to provide boxed deliveries to the 300 plus families each month. They have perfected their drive up system.  They even offer families the opportunity to speak with a volunteer from the pantry and be put on a prayer list.  It’s very humbling to watch and be a part of.

Matthew 25 provided eggs to the pantry throughout the summer.  We will be meeting this month to discuss our future calendar and events as we continue to work around COVID.  There will be a turkey drive and Angel Tree once again this fall.  Please look for details in upcoming bulletins.  We are so happy to serve our church and be part of this ministry once again for the 2020/21 year.

Please continue to be a helping hand to our ministry! The needs are great and we can’t do it alone!

In Christ’s Service,

Angie, Sophia, Lisa, & Zaffie

Annunciation Resource Center

Did you know the liturgical year begins and ends with feasts of the Theotokos (her Nativity on September 8 and the Dormition on August 15)? Here are some helpful resources as we begin a new liturgical year:

Seasons of Grace: Reflections on the Orthodox Church Year by Donna Farley, $17.95. Short, insightful reflections that help us find balance as we weave the Great Feasts into the fabric of our lives.

Do Not Judge by Hieromonk Gregorios, $7.95. As we struggle to live according to God’s commandments, we can lose hope and give up. Christ, however, suggested a very simple way for us to please Him and avoid condemnation at the Last Judgment: Do not judge in order not to be judged (Matt. 7:1-2). This slim volume addresses causes & types of criticism, gossip, and passing judgment.

The Story of Mary, the Mother of God by Dorrie Papademetriou, $20. A beautiful picture book that tells the story of the Virgin Mary’s childhood. Inspired by mosaics in the monastery of Chora in Constantinople.

Celebrate the Feasts, children’s music CD by Kh. Gigi Shadid. Stream the CD here to help young children learn the hymns of the Great Feasts or listen to her song about the feasts of Panagia here on YouTube.

Please reach out to us and let us know how we can serve you. Need a gift, an icon or items for your home church? We have them. Since you cannot come to the Resource Center during the pandemic, we will do our best to bring it to you!

You now have the option of paying for your Resource Center items through the Give+ app.
