11/27/2020

As we enter more deeply into the Christmas Fast, we understand that this will be a holiday season unlike no other, I want to commend to all of you the words of the Lord written above. Our chief and principal responsibility as Christians is to our God and to the image of God that we find in other people. And this duty is love.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 115.15,12.
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.
Verse: What shall I render to the Lord for all that he has given me?

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 13:17-21.

Brethren, obey your leaders and submit to them; for they are keeping watch over your souls, as men who will have to give account. Let them do this joyfully, and not sadly, for that would be of no advantage to you. Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you the sooner. Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do His will, working in you that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Προκείμενον. Grave Mode. ΨΑΛΜΟΙ 115.15,12.
Τίμιος ἐναντίον Κυρίου ὁ θάνατος τῶν ὁσίων αὐτοῦ.
Στίχ. Τί ἀνταποδώσωμεν τῷ Κυρίῳ περὶ πάντων, ὧν ἀνταπέδωκεν ἡμῖν;

Gospel Reading

10th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 13:10-17

At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day." Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

10th Sunday of Luke

Saints and Feasts

Nicholas
December 06

Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra

This Saint lived during the reign of Saint Constantine the Great, and reposed in 330, As a young man, he desired to espouse the solitary life. He made a pilgrimage to the holy city Jerusalem, where he found a place to withdraw to devote himself to prayer. It was made known to him, however, that this was not the will of God for him, but that he should return to his homeland to be a cause of salvation for many. He returned to Myra, and was ordained bishop. He became known for his abundant mercy, providing for the poor and needy, and delivering those who had been unjustly accused. No less was he known for his zeal for the truth. He was present at the First Ecumenical Council of the 318 Fathers at Nicaea in 325; upon hearing the blasphemies that Arius brazenly uttered against the Son of God, Saint Nicholas struck him on the face. Since the canons of the Church forbid the clergy to strike any man at all, his fellow bishops were in perplexity what disciplinary action was to be taken against this hierarch whom all revered. In the night our Lord Jesus Christ and our Lady Theotokos appeared to certain of the bishops, informing them that no action was to be taken against him, since he had acted not out of passion, but extreme love and piety. The Dismissal Hymn for holy hierarchs, The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock ... was written originally for Saint Nicholas. He is the patron of all travellers, and of sea-farers in particular; he is one of the best known and best loved Saints of all time.

Spyridon
December 12

Spyridon the Wonderworker of Trymithous

Spyridon, the God-bearing Father of the Church, the great defender of Corfu and the boast of all the Orthodox, had Cyprus as his homeland. He was simple in manner and humble of heart, and was a shepherd of sheep. When he was joined to a wife, he begat of her a daughter whom they named Irene. After his wife's departure from this life, he was appointed Bishop of Trimythus, and thus he became also a shepherd of rational sheep. When the First Ecumenical Council was assembled in Nicaea, he also was present, and by means of his most simple words stopped the mouths of the Arians who were wise in their own conceit. By the divine grace which dwelt in him, he wrought such great wonders that he received the surname 'Wonderworker." So it is that, having tended his flock piously and in a manner pleasing to God, he reposed in the Lord about the year 350, leaving to his country his sacred relics as a consolation and source of healing for the faithful.

About the middle of the seventh century, because of the incursions made by the barbarians at that time, his sacred relics were taken to Constantinople, where they remained, being honoured by the emperors themselves. But before the fall of Constantinople, which took place on May 29, 1453, a certain priest named George Kalokhairetes, the parish priest of the church where the Saint's sacred relics, as well as those of Saint Theodora the Empress, were kept, took them away on account of the impending peril. Travelling by way of Serbia, he came as far as Arta in Epirus, a region in Western Greece opposite to the isle of Corfu. From there, while the misfortunes of the Christian people were increasing with every day, he passed over to Corfu about the year 1460. The relics of Saint Theodora were given to the people of Corfu; but those of Saint Spyridon remain to this day, according to the rights of inheritance, the most precious treasure of the priest's own descendants, and they continue to be a staff for the faithful in Orthodoxy, and a supernatural wonder for those that behold him; for even after the passage of 1,500 years, they have remained incorrupt, and even the flexibility of his flesh has been preserved. Truly wondrous is God in His Saints! (Ps. 67:3 5)

2021 Stewardship Campaign Starts Now

“…the greatest of these is love” I Corinthians 13:13

WHO IS THE ACTIVE STEWARD?

The Active Steward is actively living their faith.  They don’t merely give of their treasure. They also give their time regularly attending Divine Liturgy and other worship services; they regularly participate in Holy Communion, Holy Unction, and Holy Confession; they spend their time in and offer their talent to the ministries and needs of the church, respectively; and they try to adhere to and live according to the teachings of the Orthodox Christian Faith.

This active member is often referred to as a “member in good standing.”

WHAT DOES YOUR STEWARDSHIP SUPPORT?

Stewardship is intended to support the entire church budget.

Specifically, it supports in-reach, outreach, religious education, young adult life, spiritual life events that include retreat offerings,  youth programs, our multi-generational ministries, and the church’s general operations, which itself supports the National Ministries of our Archdiocese, our Metropolis of New Jersey, and related institutions.

OUR GOAL

Our three (3) overarching Stewardship Giving goals as a Church family are to:

1.    Faithfully Fulfill God’s Stewardship Command to Give  [Gen. 2:15; Lev. 25:1-5; 2 Chronicles 31:12; Ps. 24:1]

2.    Increased, Consistent, & Regular Giving and

3.    Increased Participation from our members.

Our ultimate goal? 100% member participation and a 100% stewardship-funded budget. Currently, 300 out of 390 parishioner families who make up our church family are active Stewards, and their offerings cover about 68% of the annual parish budget.

So how do we achieve this goal of 100%?

OUR SUSTAINING STEWARDSHIP INITIATIVE

Sustaining Stewardship is a simple, scripturally consistent, and practical initiative to meet our above Stewardship Giving goals.

This initiative explicitly asks each parishioner to financially support the church by giving a portion of their treasure through automatic and recurring stewardship payments.  This member and steward who enrolls in these payments is referred to as a Sustaining Steward.

A Sustaining Steward commits to stay engaged continuously and support the church through regular weekly or monthly payments. A Sustaining Steward’s pledge rolls over to the following year without filling out a pledge card each year. A Sustaining Steward can adjust their pledge anytime to reflect their level of commitment or personal/family situation.

WHY BECOME A SUSTAINING STEWARD?
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SUSTAINING STEWARDSHIP?

Becoming a Sustaining Steward (1) fulfills God’s command to give faithfully and regularly.  As a sustaining steward, your enrollment and giving (2) rolls-over annually, eliminating the need to re-register and re-pledge every year. This automatic and recurring giving also (3) helps the church address seasonal funding gaps, and (4) helps us achieve festival independence, allowing us to save more.

Ultimately, it (5) creates better ministry and budgetary planning, and (6) helps support our church, her ministries, and their growth.

HOW DO I BECOME A SUSTAINING STEWARD?
  1. Fill out the Family Information Form HERE (first- time registration or annual update)

  2. Fill out the Online Pledge Form HERE and choose  your method of payment (auto-debit from a debit card, credit card, or checking account trough GivePlus+; personal check; or you bank’s bill payer service)

  3. If you are already signed up for regular payments through GivePlus+ or your bank's bill payer service, you are already a Sustaining Steward!  Please adjust your pledge and payment to reflect your new level of commitment for 2021 and make sure your automatic payments continue through the new year.

Annunciation is a full stewardship parish that requires no minimum pledge to be a Steward.
Our Stewardship Program encourages parishioners 18 and over to pledge donations in any amount, according to the blessings they have received from our Lord.
Our Stewardship Pledge Drive starts in November for the following calendar year, although new members and current members may submit a pledge at any time.
We offer you the Weekly Giving Guideline chart below to help you determine your level of giving. Being a good steward is using your resources wisely.

Matthew 25 Ministry News

R e m a s t e r e d

The Angel Tree is back and better than ever! This year we are offering multiple ways to participate in this Matthew 25 Outreach Ministry project if you are interested.

Option #1: Due to the pandemic, the Angel Tree, which is usually placed in the Fellowship Hall, will now be located outside, under the portico at the entrance of the Narthex. Those attending church can feel free to select an ornament from the Angel Tree.*   As always, print your name on the bottom of the green tag that is attached to the ornament. Detach the bottom portion of the tag and place it in the red box under the tree.

Option #2:  For those who are not physically attending church, you can select a gift online through  SignUp Genius. By clicking on SignUp Genius here you will be directed to the page where you can sign up for as many gifts as you like.

Option #3: Visa Gift cards can be used for a variety of needs and are always welcomed by our recipients. You can enclose a gift card (in an amount of your choosing) in an envelope addressed to Lisa Trivelis (31 Trailwood Drive Holland, PA 18966). On the form provided in the mailer, you can let us know whether you would like us to use your gift card to purchase any unclaimed Angel Tree gifts on your behalf or to distribute the gift cards to those who need them for various important needs.

This year we will be working with various individuals within our parish to fulfill the wishes and needs of adults and children in our local community. Please wrap all gifts and place the number of your gift on the outside of the package to ensure the gift gets to the right special someone (see the number on the top part of the green tag or the number next to your gift on SignUp Genius). Feel free to drop your gifts off at the church office at your convenience prior to December 13th, but all gifts must be dropped off at church NO LATER THAN December 13th.

(215) 635-0316 or office@anngoc.org

Thank You!

Matthew 25 would like to wish all of you a very Happy and blessed Thanksgiving.  We all seem to dwell on the negative that has impacted our country and lives over the past few months. Today, we would like to focus on the positive.  This year, with the support of our generous parish, we were blessed with an abundance of donations.  On November 16th,  Giant supermarket delivered over 200 turkeys to Seeds of Hope. That’s a lot of turkeys! In addition, we provided our own homeless ministry with 3 frozen turkeys.  Our community service project is traditionally one that provides turkeys for Thanksgiving. This year, with your generosity and Giant as our partner, we will not only deliver Thanksgiving turkey but Christmas dinner too.  Thank you for reading our bulletins, responding to our requests, and coming together to be part of something that continues to meet the needs of those less fortunate than ourselves.  We are so grateful.

This is a very busy time for our ministry. The Angel Tree went up on 11/22/20 and over ½ of the tree, tags were taken.  There are still many gift tags available through the sign–up genius.  If you would like to select a gift but are not comfortable with the sign-up genius please reach out to Sophia Penning.

Wishing you the gift of faith and the blessing of hope this Nativity Season.

Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. PSALM 107:8-9

Annunciation Resource Center

Annunciation Resource Center December Update

As the Nativity Fast continues and we become more mindful of our dependence on God, here is some suggested reading:

Beautiful Christmas by Megan Elizabeth Gilbert is a 64-page coloring book for children aged 5-12. As they color Christ in the cave or the shepherds glorifying God with the angels, children cultivate their own sensibility to beauty while learning to recognize some of the Church's meaningful symbols, elements, and motifs. ($9.95)

Orthodox Feasts of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary by Hugh Wybrew. Written in a guidebook style, this book explains the feasts of the incarnation from the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary through the Ascension of Jesus. The author introduces each feast with a detailed but short description of its meaning and origin and includes the festal hymns (in English) from the Vespers and Matins Services. ($15)

Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian by Elder Paisios of Mount Athos. Born around 1840 in Farasa, one of six Christian villages in the Farasa region of Cappadocia, Turkey, Fr. Arsenios entered the Holy Monastery of the Flavianna at the age of 26. With a great need for teachers in the villages, Fr. Arsenios was sent home, where he kept the Christians safe from the Turks and disease, not with guns or riots, but through prayer and common sense. The villagers loved him for his humility and wisdom, and when the time came for the Great Exchange of Peoples, he traveled beside them to Greece. ($32.95)

A Pocket Prayer Book for Orthodox Christians by the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese.  A must-have, this little prayer book is an old stand-by for Orthodox Christians, especially in these trying times. The book includes daily prayers, occasional prayers, and the Divine Liturgy. ($4)

The Monk of Mount Athos by Archimandrite Sophrony.Staretz Silouan was an uneducated peasant from the heart of European Russia. After finishing his military service in 1892, he entered the Russian Monastery of Saint Panteleimon on Mount Athos. There, he focused on the teachings of the Desert Fathers on Christian monasticism. Archimandrite Sophrony explains Silouan's teachings on topics such as pure prayer and mental stillness, and the struggle with the imagination in very simple terms. ($16)

The Deification of Man by Georgios I. Mantzaridis. In this study on the teachings of Saint Gregory Palamas, Prof. Matzaridis states that "man's true life springs from his participation in the life of God and his communion with Him." The book explains the importance of the sacraments and how they help to keep God in us. ($25.00)

Putting the "Giving" Back in "Thanksgiving"

12/01/2020

As it does every year, Thanksgiving comes and goes quickly. We spend a few hours trying to feel grateful, but then start looking for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals so we can buy more stuff. If gratitude is nothing but a feeling that lasts a few hours, are we doing something wrong? Maybe we're approaching thanksgiving the wrong way. Maybe we spend too much time focused on the “thanks,” and not enough on the “giving.”

Annunciation/Evangelismos Endowment Fund

Like all gifts that benefit Annunciation / Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church, endowed gifts to the church contribute to its growth, to ministry creation, and to its service to others fulfilling the Gospel of Christ. Endowments are particularly powerful because they deliver a dependable, perpetual source of funding to the ministries of Christ you care about most and that our Lord commands us, in the Holy Scriptures, to fulfill. Your Gift to establish an endowment is an investment in the future – an eternal investment - one that affects the salvation of each spiritual life in our church family and of those our ministries serve.

Mission Statement

The Annunciation / Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church Endowment Fund aims to provide for the long-term financial support and stability of our church’s programs, ministries, and missions consistent with the Holy Scriptures and the Orthodox Christian Tradition, to witness to the Orthodox Faith, and to serve others.

What is an Endowment Fund?

An Endowment Fund is composed of restricted funds given as individual bequests and gifts through such giving vehicles as wills, trusts, retirements or estate plans, life insurance, charitable lead or remainder trusts, gift annuities, cash, or real estate. Endowed funds are unique in that the total amount of the gift is invested and remains intact. The investment income, then, becomes a financial resource for Annunciation / Evangelismos to use. Each year, a percentage of the endowment fund’s income is distributed to benefit the mission of the Fund.  In this respect, an endowment is intended to be a perpetual gift.

Why Should I Give to the Annunciation / Evangelismos Endowment Fund?

Giving through accumulated, inherited and appreciated resources is considered “asset stewardship”. As Orthodox Christian faithful, we are encouraged to give from our accumulated resources and wealth during our life and after death. The Endowment Fund is a way for stewards to make a perpetual gift to the church from their lifetime accumulated resources. Knowing that your gift will grow with sound investment and spending practices, endowed funds:
