Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia "Makarios III" Memorial

We hold this memorial in October to celebrate Cyprus Independence Day (celebrated on October 1) and to remember and honor those who died for preserving the Hellenic Orthodox culture in our island.  Our Greek Cypriot fighters in the struggle of 1955-1959 against the British rule were not able to achieve our union with Greece but they led the way for Cyprus Independence in 1960.  We celebrate also our Greek and Cypriot fighters who died during the illegal Junta coup on July 15 and during the Turkish invasion that followed on July 20 and also on August 14 in 1974.  Those heroes gave their lives so that we can enjoy today the freedoms we have and to preserve our Hellenic Orthodox culture.

We welcome to our community today the Consul General of Cyprus in New York, Mr. Michalis Firillas, who will share with us a few words about this occasion.

We also welcome the following board members of the Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia: Georghia Kurnellas, President. Costas Pistos, PhD, Vice President. Christina Solomou, Treasurer. Popie Photiou, Recording Secretary. Karoline Kokolis, Corresponding Secretary. Stelios Tsinontides, PhD, Board Chairman. Eleni Antonakakis, Maria Kasapis, Yiota Rotsides, Kathy Sideris, Christiana Yiallourides, and Sophia Georgiou.

Cyprus society of Greater Philadelphia - Established in 1956.

Homeless Ministry News

Why Socks?

For people experiencing homelessness in our communities, a pair of clean, dry socks is so much more than just an item of clothing. Here’s why.

Three Reasons Socks are the Most-Requested Item in Homeless Shelters

  1. The average person living on the street walks a lot. Between walking to medical appointments, work opportunities and government agencies, not to mention searching for food banks and shower facilities, the average homeless person logs a lot of miles on foot. That can add up to many pairs of worn-through socks and shoes.
  2. Keeping feet dry and warm on the street is a huge challenge, especially in extreme heat, cold or rain. Most shelters close during daytime hours, leaving homeless people very few places to get away from the elements.
  3. Clean, dry socks = healthy feet. Clean, dry socks are the best way to prevent skin infections, nail diseases, frostbite and trench foot. These problems are a painful ordeal for anyone, but they are especially crippling when you don’t have a home where you can rest and recuperate. A painful foot infection makes it very difficult to get to all those important, life-changing appointments like job interviews and housing intake meetings.

Healthy feet are the ticket to mobility. Healthy feet are a part of human dignity.

Will you help? Comfort tired feet. Lift weary spirits. Give someone hope!

Thank you!
The Homeless Ministry

Matthew 25 Ministry Turkey Drive

It’s that time of year when we reflect on the many blessings that God has graced us with. November is a month of feeling thankful and bountiful. Our tables will be overflowing with delicious turkey, fixings, and pies. But, unfortunately, this isn’t true for so many people in our community who are food insufficient.  They are struggling to put weekly meals on the table, unable to provide a feast this November.

Matthew 25 is excited to promote our Annual Turkey Drive once again! We will collect money, place the order, and deliver your turkeys to Seeds of Hope Food Pantry on November 11th, 2021. It’s so easy… all you need to do is fill out the form below and mail it by November 5th.  The cost per turkey is $25.  You can donate directly through Vanco and type “Turkey Drive” under Matthew 25. You can also make a check payable to Annunciation Church and, in the memo, write “M25 Turkey Drive.”  Of course, you’re always welcome to bring your own turkey to church if you prefer.  If you choose to bring your turkey or have any questions, please email us at oceancitymom1@gmail.com.   We encourage you to donate more than one turkey if you can.  Matthew 25 will also donate a few turkeys to the Homeless Ministry to prepare and serve the homeless community in Philadelphia.

Thank you so much for supporting us and being a part of feeding families this Thanksgiving.  Continue to drop off any food donations in our bins throughout October and November.  We will deliver everything on November 11th.  Fixings are always appreciated this time of year, along with any other non-perishable foods you might like to donate.

How can laity become more welcoming? Recognize that the priesthood can be very lonely and unhealthy if the Priest and Presvytera are not allowed friendships. One reason priest and family keep a distance in the parish is because if they are seen to be closer to one or two families there is a fear that others may begin to cry ‘favoritism.’

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Daniel 3.26,27.
Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers.
Verse: For you are just in all you have done.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15.

Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned.

When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful.

All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

Fourth Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council
The Reading is from Luke 8:5-15

The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
