Youth Activities and News

Sunday School News

Last weekend our Annunciation youth made us proud at two regional events:
On Saturday, April 2nd, our parish hosted the Delaware Valley District Oratorical Festival. Sixteen students from seven local parishes presented beautiful speeches on various faith topics. Congratulations to our own Alexandra McNally and Markos Papakirk for doing a wonderful job participating in the festival.
After church on Sunday, our 3rd/4th grade class participated in the Delaware Valley Youth Commission's annual Bible Bowl. We want to congratulate Mrs. Angela Gaugler’ s 3rd grade students on achieving first place in this year's virtual event!
These are such wonderful examples of how our youth - both younger children and teens - display fellowship, commitment, and knowledge when it comes to their Orthodox Faith. Well done!
Remember that we have several worthwhile youth events coming up as Pascha approaches, including PTO's Palms and Pizza on Friday, April 15 and our Holy Friday Youth Retreat on Friday, April 22nd. We would love to see your child there!

This Week's Children's Word from OCN

Holy Friday, April 22 Youth Retreat. We encourage all children ages 6-12 to join us in prayer, learning, and fun. We are also looking for volunteers to help run the event. If you have any questions or would like to help, contact Jacinda (catechism@anngoc.org) or Debbie (hopejoy@anngoc.org).

Matthew25 Ministry News

Great Lent is a time of self-reflection and the perfect time to reprioritize and it leads us back to what is most important …God!

Matthew 25 has worked very hard this month trying to provide for the many families in Ukraine with basic needs as well as our those in our own neighborhoods who are struggling with food insecurity, our main mission.

On March 21st, we delivered $250 worth of requested items that made it on a plane to the Ukraine. We delivered our boxes to St. Anne’s Ukrainian Church in Warrington, Pa. It felt so good to be able to be a small part of such a vast humanitarian endeavor. In addition, there was a monetary donation made to IOCC to go towards buying supplies and helping the people in the Ukraine. Again, we feel so fortunate to be able to do this as a ministry for our church.

Last week was busy for M25 as well. We purchased meats from Costco, potatoes, onions, carrots, canned vegetables, and toilet paper, and delivered them to our friends at Somerton Interfaith in the northeast. Our church’s generosity touched them. When we arrived, their freezers were empty!! The pork and whole chickens that we purchased were enough for every family. How rewarding!

Yesterday, Giant delivered 100 dozen eggs, 50 pounds of butter, turkey, ham, and roasters to Seeds of Hope! Thanks to Barbra Kelly with her help in unloading and helping to stock the refrigerators. It felt like our pre-covid days at the pantry!

This delivery made it in time for the shoppers who would not be back until after Easter. We will be making a smaller delivery later this month to Seeds of Hope. We want to remind you that this was made possible through your donations. We spent $2,037.00 at Giant and given employee pricing on certain items.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve our communities and purchase so abundantly! Inflation has changed the quantities… but you helped us quality items onto the tables of hundreds of families.

We are always humbled by the generosity of our parish and in awe that we were able to do this without asking this year.

Our Sunday school continues to collect snacks for the Wissahickon after school program. We made a delivery to them last month and will deliver the collected items after Psalm Sunday.

We are reminded how blessed we are! Thank you again for your Vanco donations. They are the reason we can give so graciously!

Our ministry would also like to express our gratitude to George, Mitch, Pete, & anyone else who has helped us get payment to Giant promptly. It’s a big part of why our relationship with Giant is so seamless. There are so many people within our community that use their gifts to help us.

“God gave you the gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say “thank you”?” -William A Ward

Homeless Ministry News

On the 5th Thursday of March, eleven of our faithful parishioners gathered in a light off and on again rain to serve at Aviator Park. Five of the eleven were first timers and came with some of our usual offerings - spaghetti and meatballs, sandwiches and boxed water. In addition, we served pizza, hard boiled eggs, bananas, clementines, Tastykakes and granola bars. We also began distribution of our annual blessing bags along with gently used blankets and jackets donated by our church family. Thank you to everyone for continuing to offer help in any way you are able - whether it's by donating food and clothing, by serving or by praying for those experiencing homelessness.

We are in the process of putting together a team to serve at Aviator Park for Thursday of Bright week (April 28th). Although this is not one of our assigned serving nights, there is always a need and several of our parishioners are ready, willing, and able to offer more help! Please sign up HERE if would like to join them or contact Angela Godshall.

Meanwhile, our annual SPRING Cleaning with a Purpose drive has begun! We are collecting clean, functional, gently used as well as new household items for distribution to non-profits working to break the cycle homelessness and poverty. Please consider donating one new item along with any gently used items if you are able. Please place any of the following items in the Homeless Ministry trunk located on the balcony level by the Resource Center:

Please lift these names to the Lord in your personal prayer life as well.

Prayer for healing: Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent our Lord to heal every sickness. Visit and heal us. We pray that You heal, guide, and protect your servant (s) (pray by name for those who are sick) and grant them the gift of complete health. Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-14.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

First Mode.

Ἀδελφοί, Χριστὸς δὲ παραγενόμενος ἀρχιερεὺς τῶν μελλόντων ἀγαθῶν, διὰ τῆς μείζονος καὶ τελειοτέρας σκηνῆς, οὐ χειροποιήτου, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν, οὐ ταύτης τῆς κτίσεως, οὐδὲ διʼ αἵματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων, διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος εἰσῆλθεν ἐφάπαξ εἰς τὰ ἅγια, αἰωνίαν λύτρωσιν εὑράμενος. Εἰ γὰρ τὸ αἷμα ταύρων καὶ τράγων, καὶ σποδὸς δαμάλεως ῥαντίζουσα τοὺς κεκοινωμένους, ἁγιάζει πρὸς τὴν τῆς σαρκὸς καθαρότητα, πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὃς διὰ πνεύματος αἰωνίου ἑαυτὸν προσήνεγκεν ἄμωμον τῷ θεῷ, καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησιν ὑμῶν ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων, εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν θεῷ ζῶντι;

Gospel Reading

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt
The Reading is from Mark 10:32-45

At that time, Jesus took his twelve disciples, and he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Saints and Feasts

April 10

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on April 1, where her life is recorded. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed.
