Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-14.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt
The Reading is from Mark 10:32-45

At that time, Jesus took his twelve disciples, and he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

April 18

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on April 1, where her life is recorded. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed.

Parish News

General Assembly Today after Divine Liturgy:
All parishioners are asked to come to this meeting. The 2020 year end Financial Reports will be presented and reports of various committees and our Ladies Philoptochos. Your suggestions, comments and encouragement are needed so that our Parish Council and Church organizations, together with Fr. Peter, can continue in the direction we hope leads to progress, fellowship and God's Kingdom. Please take the little time to show you care. Thank you!

Coffee Fellowship:
We are working towards starting up Agape Coffee Fellowship again. We have been Blessed over the years with the many women, men and families who have helped host and serve the Agape Fellowship. We are looking for more parishioners to offer their support to this very important Ministry. We all miss the Fellowship and Time to be together following Divine Liturgy. In the beginning, it will look a little different than what we had in the past. We will start with an outdoor set-up.

If you can help in any way - host/hostess, purchase items or offer suggestions, please contact Eleni Manolakes at 203-788-5649 or eleni.manolakes@yahoo.com

We are very mindful of the COVID/Pandemic protocols and will do our best to ensure we can be safe.

We are thankful to our Ladies Philoptochos who oversee this Ministry....remember, all families and members are asked to host/serve at least one Sunday. We try to have at least two or three individuals/families work together for each Sunday. The Committee will guide and help. Please contact Eleni Manolakes.

Sunday School:
We have begun classes for our Catechism School Youth.  We thank our teachers, parents and Catechism School supervisors, Georgia Garay and Christina Donigian for their love and dedication in order to have our Youth return to learning about our Lord, Jesus Christ and for sharing their Faith with one another and for the needed fellowship that we all miss. Please visit the Catechism School page on the www.agoc.us website for the registration form, Covid protocol and more details at: https://www.agoc.us/youth-ministries/catechism-school.

Light-a-Candle:
We are now pleased to offer AGOC parishioners the option to light a Narthex candle or altar candle when you are unable to attend in-person services. Should you wish to light a candle, a member of the Parish Council will be happy to do so for you during the current or next services. Please visit our website homepage at www.agoc.us to use our latest Light-a-Candle feature.

SATURDAY OF LAZAROS  -- APRIL 24

8:45am  Orthros

10:00am  Divine Liturgy

Every year, the Sunday School children get together on the Saturday of Lazaros to attend the Divine Liturgy and then go downstairs to make crosses out of palms for Palm Sunday.  This is a beautiful tradition passed on for generations.  All parishioners are welcome to help.

The children who attend that day are invited to walk in the procession on Palm Sunday holding bouquets of palm leaves.

We plan to have a light snack after Liturgy with Covid precautions. We want everyone to join us!  Parents are asked to help prepare snacks, set-up and clean-up.

Please click on link to let us know you will join us so that we can prepare for snacks....thank you...

Be the Bee #173 -  Redemption & Repentance (Sunday of Saint Mary of Egypt)

Jesus tells us that He came to shed His blood and "give His life as a ransom for many.” But what exactly does that mean?

What does the Orthodox Church teach about atonement?

We're going to learn about the redemption and atonement that Jesus offers us. And this redemption isn't simply *from* something, but also *for* something.

And Saint Mary of Egypt (who we celebrate on the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent) is a perfect example of what that looks like.

Christ saves us *from* sin and death so we can be *free* to live as Christians, loving and serving both God and neighbor.
