Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 2:10-16.

Brethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

Gospel Reading

2nd Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 4:18-23

At that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

Sisoes

Sisoes the Great

This Saint, great and renowned among the ascetics of Egypt, lived in the fourth century in Scete of Nitria. After the death of Saint Anthony the Great, he left Scete to live in Saint Anthony's cave; he said of this, "Thus in the cave of a lion, a fox makes his dwelling." When Sisoës was at the end of his long life of labours, as the Fathers were gathered about him, his face began to shine, and he said, "Behold, Abba Anthony is come"; then, "Behold, the choir of the Prophets is come"; his face shone yet more bright, and he said, "Behold, the choir of the Apostles is come." The light of his countenance increased, and he seemed to be talking with someone. The Fathers asked him of this; in his humility, he said he was asking the Angels for time to repent. Finally his face became as bright as the sun, so that the Fathers were filled with fear. He said, "Behold, the Lord is come, and He says, 'Bring Me the vessel of the desert,'" and as he gave up his soul into the hands of God, there was as it were a flash of lightning, and the whole dwelling was filled with a sweet fragrance.

Parish News

    Beautiful Day at the Cathedral!

    Beautiful Day at the Cathedral!

Many members of our parish enjoyed a spiritual journey to Holy Trinity Cathedral to pray the Divine Liturgy together with Fr. Peter and Fr. Nikolas. Also concelebrating were Fr. Dennis Strouzas and Fr. Luke Mihaly. One parishioner commented, “We were very happy to be there, expressing our love and gratitude to Fr. Peter for his many years of service, and our pride for Fr. Nikolas and his service to the community of Holy Trinity as well as his service to our Assumption Church.” Visit the church website at agoc.us to see more photos.

Youth/Family Ministry

What is Soak up the Son?

Soak Up the Son is a summer program designed for families to assist them in deepening their relationship to Christ and His Church. Through weekly prayers, suggested activities, and other inspirational resources, we will encourage you to live out your faith on a daily basis—tying the Church into your homes.

An important part of Soak Up the Son is that you share it—with your family at home, your parish family, and your family or friends. We--your family from the Center for Family Care--would love for you to share how you Soak Up the Son. We look forward to connecting with you.

Don’t miss out! Have fun this summer--swim, take a nap in the backyard hammock, and enjoy an ice cream cone—but most importantly, #soakuptheson!
