Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:1-10.

Brethren, working together with him, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Gospel Reading

3rd Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 7:11-16

At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

Saints and Feasts

Symeonnewspious
October 12

Symeon the New Theologian

Saint Symeon became a monk of the Studite Monastery as a young man, under the guidance of the elder Symeon the Pious. Afterwards he struggled at the Monastery of Saint Mamas in Constantinople, of which he became abbot. After enduring many trials and afflictions in his life of piety, he reposed in 1022. Marvelling at the heights of prayer and holiness to which he attained, and the loftiness of the teachings of his life and writings, the church calls him "the New Theologian." Only to two others, John the Evangelist and Gregory, Patriarch of Constantinople, has the church given the name "Theologian." Saint Symeon reposed on March 12, but since this always falls in the Great Fast, his feast is kept today.

High School Youth Mission Trip

Thursday, Oct. 14 - 6pm - Presentation and dinner for all High School Students

Are you ready to put your Faith to work serving others on a summer youth mission trip? The Orthodox Youth Mission Team (OYMT) will be working with the Appalachian Service Project (ASP) on a weeklong mission trip in July of 2022. For over 50 years ASP’s mission has been to make homes “warmer, safer and drier” by helping repair homes in Appalachia. But at the heart of this work is relationships with those we serve and each other as we strive to be the body of Christ.  As a member of the team, you will start training in January, learning about mission in the Orthodox Church, the people we will serve and the construction and safety skills needed to do the work we’re assigned. Then you’ll travel with Orthodox high school students from several parishes to spend a week living in community and serving families in need in Appalachia. Teens currently in grades 8-12 are eligible to join. There is also a need for adult leaders to work with the teens on this mission effort. Parents welcome to attend!

To learn more, please join us for a short film and presentation by Fr. Luke Mihaly from Holy Trinity Church in Danbury and his youth who have participated in the OYMT, on October 14 at 6pm in our Parish Hall to hear all about this unique experience to serve. Dinner provided!!

Light-a-Candle

Light a Candle and Say a Prayer at Assumption

“It is impossible to imagine an Orthodox church in which candles are not lit.” (Blessed Simeon of Thessalonica, 15th Century)

Lighting a candle in the Narthex is one of the first things many people do upon entering an Orthodox Church. This act symbolizes many things. For some, it is an offering of prayer for one’s personal needs or that of a family member or friend. Others light candles and pray for protection, safety, and courage to live this life without fear.

Lighting candles is an important part of our faith and we know that it has been - and continues to be - challenging for some to be unable to pray and light candles inside the church over the past year.

We are now pleased to offer AGOC parishioners the option to light a candle when you are unable to attend in-person services. Should you wish to light a candle, a member of the Parish Council will be happy to do so for you during services. Please use this link: https://agocdanbury.square.site/
