Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Mode. Psalm 75.11,1.
Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.
Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4.

Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand.

Gospel Reading

Forgiveness Sunday
The Reading is from Matthew 6:14-21

The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

"And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

Forgiveness Sunday

The Holy Fathers have appointed the commemoration of Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight here, on the eve of the holy Forty-day Fast, demonstrating to us not by simple words, but by actual deeds, how beneficial fasting is for man, and how harmful and destructive are insatiety and the transgressing of the divine commandments. For the first commandment that God gave to man was that of fasting, which the first-fashioned received but did not keep; and not only did they not become gods, as they had imagined, but they lost even that blessed life which they had, and they fell into corruption and death, and transmitted these and innumerable other evils to all of mankind. The God-bearing Fathers set these things before us today, that by bringing to mind what we have fallen from, and what we have suffered because of the insatiety and disobedience of the first-fashioned, we might be diligent to return again to that ancient bliss and glory by means of fasting and obedience to all the divine commands. Taking occasion from today's Gospel (Matt. 6:14-21) to begin the Fast unencumbered by enmity, we also ask forgiveness this day, first from God, then from one another and all creation.

Archbishop Elpidophoros Launches GOARCH Ukraine Relief Fund

In response to the tragic humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, and the immediate aid needed there, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America announced a major fundraising effort that will help those most affected by the Russian invasion.

The GOARCH Ukrainian Relief Fund, established in collaboration with the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), aims to raise $1 million for both immediate and long-term support of the Ukrainian people. Early today, His Eminence also donated $100,000 to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, on behalf of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, to support the efforts of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

In his upcoming Encyclical on the crisis, Archbishop Elpidophoros states, "We join our spirit to the spirit of His All-Holiness and exhort all our Faithful: offer prayers and tangible support for all the Ukrainian People, those of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and those of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the Moscow Patriarchate, those of the Ukrainian Catholic and Jewish communities, and all who find themselves in the dire circumstances of war.”

Your help is needed in the relief efforts

Honoring Our Past Event

A Celebration - Saturday, April 2, 2022  - Dinner at 5:00pm

In anticipation of our Consecration celebration in September 2023, we are asking for your help to document and preserve our early Assumption Church history through your personal stories.

All are invited and encouraged to attend an evening of dinner and storytelling in our Church Hall. Join us for this one-time opportunity to tell your family story and ensure that your family history will be recorded in the Assumption Church archives.

Do you remember building our Church? Do you have a story about meeting Fr. Peter in the 1970’s? Is there a story your parents or grandparents often told? Is there a message that you have heard here in our Church, that still guides you in your life?

We need you to participate! Bring your stories. Bring your photos. Help us leave a legacy for our children by sharing your personal perspective.

Here’s how it works:

The event is free and reservations are required to attend. Email office@agoc.us or add your name to the signup sheet in the Parish Hall. Please indicate if you would like to share a story. Plan for no more than 5 minutes at the microphone.

We have a videographer who will film the evening and who will make a short video that will be shown at the Consecration celebration event at the Amber Room. By registering, you agree to be filmed.

Please bring any written materials, photos, videos, etc. that you are willing to loan us to scan for future display and archiving.

If you have any videos on hard copies, please feel free to bring your hard drive, CD, or other device where the videos are stored. If you happen to have videos in digital form, we can provide a link for you to send them directly to us. These materials will be crucial to the creation of the Consecration video.

Your participation is not guaranteed to be included in the Consecration video, but the event will be available for viewing on a new Archive section of our website. Help us preserve our history.

God's Work Can Be a Joyful Labor.

The Miracle of St. Theodore of Tyro and Kolyva

On the two Saturdays before Lent and the first Saturday of Lent we celebrate Liturgies in which we commemorate our loved ones who have passed on. Lists of names are brought, together with kolyva.

Fifty years after the death of St. Theodore, the emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363), wanting to commit an outrage upon the Christians during the first week of Great Lent, commanded the city - commander of Constantinople to sprinkle all the food provisions in the marketplace with the blood offered to idols.

St. Theodore appeared in a dream to Archbishop Eudoxius, ordering him to inform all the Christians that no one should buy anything at the marketplace, but rather eat cooked wheat with honey (kollyva). In memory of this occurrence, the Orthodox Church annually celebrates the holy Great Martyr Theodore the Recruit on the first Saturday of Great Lent.

Saturday of Souls

So why do we use kolyva? In John 12:2, Jesus says: " Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. " The boiled wheat is used as a symbol of our hope in the Resurrection. From the grain that died comes the fruit of eternal life. Kollyva is then blessed and distributed to the faithful.
